Samsung introduces a new 14nm Exynos processor for mid-range devices

Samsung today announced a new mobile SoC to expand the reach of its advanced semiconductor technology to mid-range smartphones. It has announced the newest member of its Exynos 7 Octa processor family. The Exynos 7 Octa 7870 uses Samsung’s most advanced 14-nanometer FinFET process technology and has been designed primarily for mid-range smartphones and other mobile devices.

We reported earlier this month that Samsung already has a new mid-range smartphone in the pipeline that will be powered by its new Exynos processor. The Galaxy J7 (2016) is expected to be unveiled in the coming months and it’s rumored to be powered by the Exynos 7870 processor. Samsung hasn’t confirmed this for now though.

Samsung Mobile managed 14% smartphone profits in 2015, Apple sits firmly at 91%

According to a revelation made by Cannacord Genuity, Samsung managed to account for 14 percent of the smartphone profits in 2015. Apple on the other hand, accounted for about 91 percent of the profits raked in during the year, asserting its dominance in the mobile industry yet again.

While the two figures added up is nothing short of a mathematical anomaly, there’s an explanation for that. Cannacord reports that the likes of Sony, HTC, Lenovo etc lost 1 percent each of their profit margins compared to 2014, while Microsoft lost pretty big with a 3 percent decrease in profits.

The likes of BlackBerry, LG, TCL (responsible for Alcatel OneTouch phones) didn’t even touch the 1 percent mark, thus accounting for the rest of the pie.

As far as Samsung’s position in the market is concerned, it is important to note that the company was at 11 percent in Q3 2015. So it seems like some last minute holiday season shopping has helped Samsung bump up its profits by about 3 percent. Interestingly, Apple was at 94 percent in Q3 2015. So one could say that Samsung’s best days are ahead, especially with the release of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge on the horizon.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Samsung possibly teasing the Gear 360 VR camera on Twitter

The leaks and rumors have been flying around aplenty in recent days, and with less than a week to go to Samsung’s Unpacked event, the company has started officially teasing what is to come. We exclusively reported that Samsung is working on the Gear 360 virtual reality camera, which is expected to accompany the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge on February 21. The Unpacked event invite backed our report up as well, and it looks like Samsung’s Twitter account could just have teased the Gear 360.

“Change the way you capture every angle on 2.21.16″ is what one tweet says on the official Samsung Mobile Twitter mobile handle, with a video of someone capturing a boy and girl giving each other a “smoochie-oochie”. It’s not exactly the kind of thing you would want to capture on virtual reality (compared to landscapes or some such, at least in the background), but we can’t help but think the tweet is referring to the Gear 360 in some way.

Of course, we would also be reaching a bit far with all this, especially since the #TheNextGalaxy tag in the tweet means it could simply be a hint towards the Galaxy S7 and its new 12-megapixel BRITECELL camera. Either way, we can expect the teases to continue as the anticipated day gets closer and hopefully give us some hints that the internet hasn’t already put out there.

Samsung Mobile President Dongjin Koh talks about the company’s vision for the future

J.K. Shin served as the chief of Samsung’s mobile business for a very long time but back in December last year he handed over the day-to-day running to Dongjin Koh. Shin continues to head the overall mobile division and is now focused on long-term growth strategy and development of new growth businesses. Koh is now the president of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Communications Business. He previously served as the head of mobile research and development at Samsung, playing an integral role in the launch of high-end devices like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Note 5.

A new video released by the company sees Dongjin Koh discuss Samsung’s vision, new products as well as his personal objectives ahead of Unpacked 2016. He reiterates Samsung’s commitment to offering new values and extend benefits of new technologies to its customers. “We should try something new,” he says, “something which hasn’t been done before.” The short video offers great insight into how Koh conducts business and the vision that he has to propel the company’s mobile business forward.

The Galaxy S7 edge has leaked in Dubai, box and all

There have been quite a few leaks over the past few days. We’ve seen live pictures and renders of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge but the latest leak shows off a purported unit of the Galaxy S7 edge that has been outed in Dubai and it’s accompanied by the box and accessories. The device seen in these pictures does appear to be very similar to the one we’ve seen in previous leaks so far.

Someone is actually selling this handset on Dubizzle – that’s like Craigslist for Dubai – for 4500 AED or just about $1100. The box contains what appears to be two different chargers and oddly no earphones. Nobody can vouch for this product since Samsung hasn’t officially released the handset as yet and it’s unclear whether this is just a prototype or a dummy unit no matter how closely it resembles the real deal. The listing says that the unit has been “imported from USA” and that customers can get it before launch. If you’re in Dubai and can’t wait for Samsung’s next flagship to arrive maybe you can get this at your own risk, it’s not like people haven’t been scammed before.

Samsung’s smartphone market share in India grows to 46 percent

Samsung, which has consistently been India’s largest smartphone manufacturer for the past few years, is now claiming that its market share has increased from 35 percent in 2014 to 46 percent in 2015. According to PTI, Manu Sharma, director for mobiles business at Samsung India Electronics, said during the launch of the Galaxy A5 (2016) and the Galaxy A7 (2016) that the company’s smartphone market share in India now stands at 45.9 percent.

The South Korean electronics giant now has an overall market share of 44 percent across all the segments. Mr. Sharma said that Samsung is working on bringing innovations to the market with a strong focus on research and development. “We have 10,000 engineers working to really differentiate our offering in the market by bringing innovations,” he said. The company is manufacturing all its mobile devices in india except the Gear VR and the Gear S2.

Samsung had been facing a stiff competition in the Indian market from brands like Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Micromax and Lenovo, but it looks like the company is back on track, especially after launching value-for-money devices in Galaxy J series and Galaxy On series of smartphones. The company recently announced that it will start offering dual-SIM versions of its high-end smartphones starting this year. It has already launched the Galaxy Note 5 dual SIM in India.
