The Samsung Slider gives sports spectators a view of the entire pitch in real-time

One of the most frustrating things about attending a rugby game is not being able to see what’s going on when all of the action is taking place at the other end of the pitch. Sure, you can look at one of the massive displays, but, understandably, it’s not as good as having the events unfold right in front of your eyes. However, Samsung’s hoping to make that an issue of the past with its new “Slider” seats, which will make their debut at the Rugby World Series matches in London later this month.

As can be seen in the image above, the Slider is essentially a carriage that consists of four luxurious race-like bucket seats, complete with seatbelts. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably asking yourself: “Why are harnesses required at a rugby game?” Well, it’s because the Slider’s mounted to a track on the side of the pitch; enabling the chairs to move up and down the field at speeds of up to 20mph — so spectators can quite literally follow the game as it’s in-play.

Sounds pretty awesome, huh? I think so, too. Unfortunately, the only way to experience the Slider is to win a competition that requires you to have purchased a qualifying Samsung TV, Wireless Audio 360 Speaker or Multiroom Soundbar between 1st January to 14th May 2016. If you meet this criterion, you’ll need to head over to Samsung’s website, complete the entry form and hope for the best.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini and the Galaxy J3 (2016) getting Marshmallow soon

Samsung recently took the wraps off the Galaxy J3 (2016) [our review here] for international markets, the device was also launched in the U.S. via Verizon Wireless, AT&T and a couple of prepaid carriers. While the American models featured Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, some regions had to make do with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Well, it seems like the company is on course to fix that with the Galaxy J3 (2016) said to be getting Marshmallow update very soon.

The handset is already sold with Marshmallow on board in some regions like South Korea (in addition to the U.S.), so a global update shouldn’t be far away. In what has come as a surprise to many, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is also about to receive an update to the latest version of Android. The update has already been spotted at the Wi-Fi Alliance, which is an indication that of things to come. The Galaxy S5 mini last saw the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update in 2015, so it’s been a long wait for the customers.

Samsung ties up with Paytm in India to open its online brand store

Samsung has been trying to find a right balance between online and offline sales of its devices in India. The company recently started localising e-commerce order delivery, installation, and collection of payment for cash-on-delivery orders through authorized distributors. Now, the company has tied up with Indian e-commerce marketplace Paytm to open its online brand store in the country.

After working with major online marketplaces Flipkart, Amazon, and Snapdeal, Samsung has now tied up with Paytm according to a report from The Economic Times. Samsung can now open an independent online brand store on Paytm where it can control the sellers, inventory, pricing, and promotions of its products. The South Korean electronics giant can also run promotional campaigns and tag its brick-and-mortar stores, which would enable the company in generating enough sales for their offline channel through this online store.

Wazir Advisors’ founder and managing director Harminder Sahni said: “Marketplaces are like stores. Brands are realising there is no reason to have another retailer in between for their online presence. The real benefit is when there is no one in between. Even from the regulatory point of view, with marketplaces not allowed to control prices, this move falls in line.”  Going hyperlocal would give Samsung greater control over online sales of its products and a chance to maintain a good relationship with conventional distributors, dealers, and store owners while having a good online presence at the same time.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 4 now receiving Marshmallow update in Germany

Proud owners of the unlocked Galaxy Note 4 in Germany have awoken to a pretty surprising notification on their handset this morning, prompting them to download and install the long-awaited Marshmallow update. The upgrade, which weighs in at an eye-watering 1.29GB, carries all the added functionality you’d expect to find baked into Android 6.0.1, including compatibility for Doze and Google Now on Tap.

This release comes exactly one month after Samsung distributed an identical update for all variants of the device located in India, and five weeks after the International model started receiving it. The next market that the firmware is set to go live in is Canada as the region’s second-largest carrier Telus has revealed that it’s hoping to roll out the OTA to its carrier-branded Galaxy Note 4 on May 16.

Pricing of two Galaxy Tab S2 models and the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 now available

Last month, Samsung released updated models of the Galaxy Tab S2 series with a couple of hardware improvements. A new report has now revealed the European pricing of the 2016 Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 models as well as the new Galaxy Tab A 10.1.

According to our sources, the Wi-Fi only model of the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 will start from €349 ($398) while the 4G model will apparently cost €469 ($535). The Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, on the other hand, will be sold for €539 ($615) if you opt to get the 4G LTE variant, while the Wi-Fi version will be significantly cheaper at €419 ($478).

Lastly, the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 is said to be priced at €349 ($398) and €289 ($329) for the 4G LTE and Wi-Fi only models respectively.

It is said that both the models of the Galaxy Tab S2 will be available in a new Gold variant in addition to the standard White/Black models. The Galaxy Tab A 10.1, however, will only be sold in Black or White options.

A precise launch date for these tablets is not available at the moment, but we expect more details to follow in the days to come.

Samsung launches the Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) in India

Samsung has launched its latest mid-range smartphones, the Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016), in India today. The Galaxy J5 (2016) is priced at INR 13,990 while the Galaxy J7 (2016) is priced at INR 15,990. Both these devices feature Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and will be available exclusively through online retailer Flipkart starting today (midnight).

The Galaxy J5 (2016) features a 5.2-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM, and a 3,100 mAh battery. Interestingly, the Galaxy J7 (2016) variant that was launched in India earlier today comes with a 5.5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and 2GB RAM instead of a 1080p display and 3GB RAM. The device is powered by an Exynos 7870 processor and packs in a 3,300 mAh battery. Both devices have 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, dual-SIM connectivity with LTE, and dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n.

In the imaging department, the Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) offer a 13-megapixel primary camera with ƒ/1.9 aperture and LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with ƒ/1.9 aperture and front-facing LED flash. Both devices feature NFC chips and come with the S Bike Mode, which was first launched with the Galaxy J3 (2016) in India. Samsung is also offering double data offer through Airtel along with the Ultra Data Saving (UDS) mode powered by Opera Max.

Samsung rolls out May security OTA for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in Australia

Just four days after it pushed out the May security maintenance release for the Galaxy Note 5 in India, Samsung has today started distributing an identical upgrade for all unlocked variants of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in Australia.

In addition to transporting all of Google’s latest patches to the handsets, the update also bundles a plethora of Samsung-specific optimizations, such as enhancements for the palm rejection functionality that ships on board the latter device.

If you would like to see if the firmware is ready for your handset, simply head into Settings, followed by About Device, locate and select Software Update, then hit the Update Now button. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to download the OTA.
