Galaxy J2 (2016) passes through the FCC

Earlier today, an unannounced dual-SIM Galaxy-branded smartphone passed through the United States of America’s official certification authority, the FCC. The handset was recorded carrying the model number SM-J210F, so we have good reason to believe that the device is, in fact, the long-rumored Galaxy J2 (2016). Unfortunately, the listing itself didn’t disclose anything about the unit’s internals, other than the fact that it will ship with a 1,500mAh battery.

However, a recent AnTuTu benchmark test revealed that the Galaxy J2 (2016) will pack a 4.7-inch display, a 1.5GHz Spreadtrum SC8830 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable memory, an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP selfie shooter. It’s also expected to run the latest build of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box, which will, of course, be skinned with the most recent version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.

Republic Wireless adds a handful of Samsung smartphones to its lineup

Republic Wireless has announced that it’s going to further increase the mass adoption of its Wi-Fi first business model by bringing in a nationwide GSM carrier to its cellular network, but that’s not the most interesting thing the MVNO has announced, the interesting thing is that it’s improving its product portfolio with a handful of Samsung smartphone.

The Mobile Virtual Network Operator has confirmed that it’s going to add seven new devices to its lineup, four of which belong to Samsung. Handsets being added to the lineup include the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S7 edge, the Galaxy S6 as well as the Galaxy J3 (2016). Samsung will launch five Galaxy flagship smartphones in 2017

Samsung fans are looking forward to just one more flagship handset for this year before they start concerning themselves with what the company has in store for them next year. The Galaxy Note 6 will be launched in a couple of months and then it’s the long wait to early next year when we see the first new flagships from the company. It appears that Samsung is going to launch five new Galaxy flagship smartphones in 2017.

The five new flagships will include the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy S8 edge, the Galaxy Note 7, the Galaxy Note 7 edge as well as the Galaxy X. The first four flagships are said to use a 2.5K resolution Super AMOLED display with an RBG subpixel arrangement. The Galaxy X is going to be Samsung’s foldable smartphone and it’s going to feature a 4K display with diamond PenTile subpixel arrangement. It was almost a year ago when we reported that Samsung was working on Project Valley, its foldable smartphone, and recent reports out of Korea suggest that this handset might finally be launched in 2017. It’s believed that this handset will easily be foldable in half, like a wallet, making it much easier to carry it in a pocket. Samsung already has several patents for technology that will be used inside a foldable smartphone so it’s not really going to be surprising when it eventually comes out with one.

Galaxy A8 receives Wi-Fi Certification running Android 6.0.1

Samsung has been, slowly but surely, dishing out the long-awaited Marshmallow update to all eligible smartphones in its 2015/2016 lineup, and it now looks like the Galaxy A8 will be the next major handset to receive the firmware as the device has just been granted Wi-Fi Certification running the latest build of Android 6.0.1.

Typically, once a device passes through the Wi-Fi Certification facility and receives approval for an upgrade, manufacturers start pushing out an OTA within just one-to-two weeks — so if you own a Galaxy A8, you shouldn’t have too much longer to wait until you can start playing around with all the new functionality Marshmallow has to offer.

Sprint is giving new Samsung Pay customers up to $100 in gift cards

If you own a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge or Galaxy Note 5 locked to Sprint and haven’t registered for Samsung Pay yet, you may want to listen up as Samsung has just kicked off a great new promotion targeted at you.

For the next three weeks, all customers who sign up, add a compatible card and make three in-store payments using the platform will receive a $20 complimentary gift card for use in either Nike, Whole Foods, Overstock, Toys R Us or GAP.

If they continue to use the service and make a total of five transactions during the aforementioned offer period, they’ll be awarded another gift card worth $30, which can, of course, be redeemed in the same retailers.

Finally, if a total of ten payments are processed during the timeframe, customers will be presented with a $50 gift card, in addition to the $20 and $30 offerings — so there’s a total of $100 worth of free rewards up for grabs as part of this deal.

Getting in on the action couldn’t be easier, either. All you have to do is open up the Samsung Pay application on your smartphone, input your credit/debit card details and billing information, then you should be good to go.

AT&T sending out May security patch for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

AT&T has started sending out an update containing the May security patch for the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge. Although we’re already 12 days into May, it’s good to see that the carrier hasn’t forgotten to issue the patch, even though it is yet to officially detail the new update on its website. It seems like this is merely a security update so there won’t be any new features on board.

Devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5 (unlocked) have seen the May security patch already. If the update hasn’t reached your device yet, head over to the Settings » About device page to try pulling it manually. Have you seen the update on your AT&T Galaxy S7 or the S7 edge? Make sure you let us know in the comments below.

Hardware and pricing of the Galaxy C5 and C7 revealed

The Galaxy C5 and the Galaxy C7 are gearing up for a release as we all know. It has already been ascertained that China will be the first to get them. Images of the Galaxy C5 have given us a very good idea of what to expect. Chinese site myDrivers has now accessed more details on the handset courtesy of a source. We can see the hardware specifications of the two handsets listed out on a piece of paper, so it’s possible that someone with inside knowledge of Samsung’s operations in China was responsible for this leak.

Either way, it’s claimed that the Galaxy C7 and the Galaxy C5 will feature 5.7 and 5.2-inch 1080p displays respectively. Further, the handsets are also said to be sporting the octa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 617 chipset, a 16-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage and Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

As for the pricing, the Galaxy C5, and the C7 will supposedly cost 1,599 CNY ($245) and 1,799 CNY ($276) respectively. The leak mentions that this pricing will only be valid online, suggesting that the handsets might be slightly more expensive via brick-and-mortar retail stores.
