Samsung may opt for iPhone-styled Home button to improve fingerprint scanning

Two Samsung patents have been discovered which show that the company may be looking at a new approach to improve fingerprint scanning on its smartphones. The first patent details the use of an iPhone-styled round Home button under which the fingerprint scanner will be placed. That’s exactly how it has been ever since fingerprint scanning came to the iPhone. Since the company has long been accused of copying Apple even though it has patented such a solution it may be unlikely for Samsung to replace the oblong Home button on its handsets with one that’s clearly synonymous with the iPhone, despite the fact that it’s not technically illegal for Samsung to opt for this solution.

The second patent points to a solution that we’ve seen on several other Android handsets. It doesn’t put the fingerprint scanner under the Home button, the scanner is placed on the back of the device instead where there’s more space to install a larger sensor to improve fingerprint scanning. We’ve seen this solution even on handsets from the likes of Huawei so it won’t be surprising if Samsung does this as well. Whether or not Samsung does this is another question because it patents lots of inventions and not all of them see the light of day.

New patent details Samsung’s multi-camera iris recognition system

It has long been rumored that Samsung is going to introduce iris recognition in its mobile devices and a few weeks ago it released a tablet for the government and businesses in India that features an iris scanner. It’s also more or less confirmed that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to have an iris scanner onboard. Samsung has been working on this biometric technology for some time now and a new patent filed by the company details its multi-camera iris recognition system.

The patent on this Samsung invention is still pending, it details that the system may generate an image signal by capturing images of the face and eyes of the user and that it uses three lenses to capture the image signal before checking the iris of the user based on the image generated. It also looks at other factors before providing access to the device. The patent also notes that if the system does not recognize the person trying to access the device it will issue a voice message guiding them to retry the iris scan. Even though the Galaxy Note 7 is likely to be the first consumer device from Samsung to feature this technology the patent mentions that the iris scanning system may be used in a laptop computer, a wearable computer, an Internet of Things device, a tablet, and other products.

Galaxy On5 (2016) may be in the pipeline as well

A few weeks ago data from import tracker Zauba revealed that Samsung has imported bits and pieces for the SM-G610F into India for testing and evaluation. The SM-G610F was also spotted on Geekbench where it revealed the handset’s specifications as well, it’s likely that this model number corresponds to the Galaxy On7 (2016). Latest data from Zauba shows that the Galaxy On5 (2016) may be in the pipeline as well.

Samsung has imported several units of the SM-G5700 into India for testing, R&D, and evaluation. Since the Galaxy On5 has model number SM-G550 it’s likely that this corresponds to the Galaxy On5 (2016). Samsung launched the Galaxy On series in November last year so it will be due for an update in a few months. From the looks of it, we might see both the Galaxy On5 (2016) and the Galaxy On7 (2016) in the near future.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to come with 64GB storage and a blue color variant?

It was reported yesterday that the next Galaxy Note device from Samsung would indeed be the Galaxy Note 7, and that it could come with an inbuilt iris scanner. Now, some more specifications of the upcoming Galaxy Note smartphone have been leaked.

According to a new tweet from Evan Blass (@evleaks), the Galaxy Note 7 features a 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, 64GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 12-megapixel primary camera with dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, and IP68 certification for water- and dust-resistance. He also mentioned that the Galaxy Note 7 would be available in three color options: black, silver, and blue. Most of these features were exclusively reported by us a few months ago.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2, 2016, and we expect it to come with a USB Type-C port, new S Note-related features, and a BlackBerry Hub-like Samsung Focus app. However, anything can change before a final release of the device. Are you excited about the Galaxy Note 7?

Samsung Ahead might be Samsung’s version of Google Glass

It has long been rumored that Samsung could be working on a Google Glass rival of its own even though Google has discontinued that wearable device itself. Some patent filings by Samsung were discovered a couple of years ago which hinted at the Gear Glass – a possible Google Glass competitor – and it was even rumored at one point that this wearable device could launch alongside the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung is yet to come out with such a product but a new trademark application from the company has been spotted which suggests that Samsung could call its Google Glass rival Samsung Ahead.

Samsung has filed a trademark application from an as yet unannounced product called Ahead, the patent filing includes a logo and describes it as a wearable computer “in the shape of a helmet.” The patent filing also details that this product will an operating software for wearable digital electronic devices, an electronic display module, MP3 functions, and more. Granted that these descriptions have just been added to offer protection to the trademarked product again products with similar features that some company might want to call Ahead as well, if approved, the trademark filing will protect the product against that. Obviously it doesn’t confirm if and when a Samsung-made Google Glass rival is going to hit the market even though we have been hearing about it for years now.

Verizon starts rolling out June security patch for the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung rolled out June security patch for the Galaxy Note 4 last week, and it’s now time for Verizon to do so. The carrier has started rolling out June security patch for Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910V) devices on its network.

The software update with version number MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPF3 brings the most up to date Android security patch to the Galaxy Note 4 on Verizon. If you haven’t received the update on your device yet, you can manually check for it by going to Settings > About device > Software Update.
