Samsung details how you can identify the new Galaxy Note 7

Samsung has finally started replacing Galaxy Note 7 units that have faulty batteries with those that don’t. There’s nothing different about the new stock other than the battery which is now being sourced from a different supplier. Samsung has now detailed the steps through which you can identify the “New Galaxy Note 7.”

As previously reported, units in the new inventory feature a green battery icon. Samsung says that the icon is going to be visible in three locations: the Status Bar, the Always On Display screen as well as the Power Off prompt screen. The retail box of the new inventory also features a black square symbol which immediately lets you know that the handset inside does not have a faulty battery. Samsung has once again reiterated its commitment to the safety of customers and has urged Galaxy Note 7 owners across the globe to immediately participate in the replacement program.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Samsung launches the Galaxy J7 Prime and the Galaxy J5 Prime in India

Samsung has announced two new smartphones today for the Indian market, the Galaxy J7 Prime and the Galaxy J5 Prime. The Galaxy J7 Prime was recently introduced in Vietnam, and its Indian pricing was leaked last week. The Galaxy J5 Prime, however, is a brand new device. Both these devices feature metal unibodies, fingerprint sensors, and the new S Secure and S Battery Planning features.

As we reported earlier today, the Galaxy J7 Prime is priced at INR 18,790 ($280 or €249), while the Galaxy J5 Prime is priced at INR 14,790 ($220 or €196) in India. The former is available for purchase starting today from the company’s official web store, but the Galaxy J5 Prime will be available by the end of this month. Both smartphones will be available in Dynamic Black and Dynamic Gold from all the reputed online and offline stores across the country.

The Galaxy J5 Prime comes with a 5-inch HD TFT display, an 8-megapixel primary camera, and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. Both the cameras on this smartphone have an aperture of f/1.9, in line with other Galaxy J series devices launched this year. It is powered by a quad-core processor (model unknown as of now) and 2GB RAM. There’s 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. It comes with a 2,400 non-removable battery, a fingerprint sensor, dual-SIM card slot, and LTE connectivity.

The Galaxy J7 Prime features a 5.5-inch 1080p TFT display, an Exynos 7870 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, and a 3,300 mAh battery. The front-facing, as well as the rear-facing camera on this device, have an aperture of f/1.9. There’s a microSD card slot, a fingerprint sensor, LTE, dual-SIM card slot, and a microUSB 2.0 port.

The Galaxy J5 Prime and the Galaxy J7 Prime are covered by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. Samsung has also introduced S Secure and S Battery Planning features, which have been developed by Samsung India’s R&D center. The former allows users to protect apps, images, and Wi-Fi networks using the fingerprint sensor. The latter is an advanced battery saving feature that preserves battery power for calls and re-routes calls to another number if the phone’s battery is too low.

[Poll] Do you use wireless charging on your Samsung handset?

Wireless charging has been a standard feature on all Samsung flagship handsets over the last couple of years but since the company doesn’t ship a wireless charger with the handset, customers have to spend more in order to take advantage of this feature. That being said, it’s unlikely that everybody buys a wireless charging or one of Samsung’s compatible docking stations to wirelessly charge their handsets. Samsung Z2 receives DG SDPPI certification in Indonesia

Following a successful launch in India and South Africa, the Tizen-powered Samsung Z2 has now received certification from the Directorate General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information (DG SDPPI) in Indonesia.

For those unaware of the DG SDPPI, it’s essentially the Indonesia’s answer to the FCC. It conducts the final batch of tests, and the overall result determines whether a new electronic product can launch in the region.

What’s particularly interesting about this filing is that the handset has been listed as being locally manufactured in Indonesia. Last year, the company opened an assembly plant in Jakarta to produce low-cost smartphones, so it’s good to see it being put to use.

Seeing as the DG SDPPI has approved Samsung’s request to launch the device in Indonesia, it shouldn’t be too much longer until it hits the shelves. It was recently added to the firm’s website too, suggesting that it’ll arrive sooner rather than later.

Samsung’s flagship flip phone poses yet again in leaked pictures

We exclusively reported about three months ago that Samsung has a flagship flip phone in the pipeline codenamed Veyron. The company recently launched its Galaxy Folder 2 entry-level clamshell handset and now it appears to be set to launch this high-end model. Some images of this handset were leaked online two days ago and we’re now seeing a fresh batch of leaked images which give us a good look at the SM-W2017.

The Samsung SM-W2017′s specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. It features a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel selfie camera as well as a USB Type-C port. Additional features include a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device as well as NFC which will add support for Samsung Pay to the SM-W2017. The latest leaked images show off this handset in all its glory and reiterate that it’s going to be offered in a gold hue. Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet when the SM-W2017 is going to be launched and which selected markets it will be sold in.

It’s now illegal to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane

You might have read about the advisory that the US Federal Aviation Administration sent out warning passengers not to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane, the one that wiped over $10 billion from Samsung’s market value. That advisory was issued before Samsung and the US government formally recalled more than one million Galaxy Note 7 handsets in the country. The FAA has sent out another advisory which mentions that as a result of the official recall it’s now illegal to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane.

Consider this to be a reminder from the FAA that it’s now formally illegal to use the Galaxy Note 7 on an airplane. The FAA is calling on passengers to ensure that their units are powered off and are disconnected from any charging equipment. They also have to make sure that any apps which can inadvertently turn on the phone have been disabled. Passengers who are flying with the Galaxy Note 7 are required to keep it in carry-on baggage as the handset can not be placed in checked baggage.
