Hackers could exploit major Samsung Knox flaw to get full control of a phone

Samsung Knox was created to improve the security of Android on the company’s handsets but it’s not without vulnerabilities of its own. Researchers from the Viral Security Group – an Israeli research firm – have discovered three critical security flaws in Samsung Knox which requires an existing vulnerability and allowed them “full control” of a Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 when they were testing the exploit earlier this year. These vulnerabilities were reported to Samsung in due time and the company patched them in a security update.

“Once you have the existing vulnerability this one overcomes all of Samsung’s protection mechanisms and gives you complete control of the device,” the researchers explained to Wired, adding that they were able to avoid all protections and had the ability to execute their own code. Samsung may have patched the existing CVE-2015-1805 kernel vulnerability that this exploit relied upon but researchers are of the view that older devices that have not yet been updated could still remain at risk. This is precisely why a spokesperson for Samsung encouraged customers to always ensure that the software on their devices is regularly updated while reiterating that this exploit has already been fixed by the company in a security update sent out earlier this year.

Galaxy Note 7 sales have also been resumed in Dubai

Samsung is now getting down to the business of selling the Galaxy Note 7 once again after suspending sales last month due to a battery cell issue. It has been running a replacement program for the past couple of weeks through which it’s replacing all existing Galaxy Note 7 units that don’t have a safe battery. Samsung resumed sales of the Galaxy Note 7 in South Korea a couple of days ago and it will do the same in other markets across the globe in the coming weeks. The company has now resumed sales of the Galaxy Note 7 in Dubai.

Dubai was also one of the first markets where the Galaxy Note 7 was released even before the official release date. Samsung’s retail partners are now selling the Galaxy Note 7 once again in the emirate. Sales have been resumed on the first day of GITEX which is an information technology exhibition held annually in Dubai, there’s always a spike in sales of electronic devices during GITEX so this was as good a time as any to relaunch the Galaxy Note 7 in Dubai. Customers who pick up the Galaxy Note 7 now in the emirate will receive incentives that include a wireless charger and a 128GB microSD card.

The ‘green battery icon’ update brings a plethora of new emojis to the Galaxy Note 7

If you cast your mind back to a little over two weeks ago, you may recall that Samsung started distributing an update to the Galaxy Note 7. At the time, the firm announced that the upgrade merely introduces a ‘green battery icon‘ on units that aren’t subject to the recall. It failed to reveal, however, that it also brings Unicode 9 emojis to the handsets, in addition to compatibility for skin tone modifiers.

You can find all of the new emojis below:

Samsung rolls out Android 6.0.1 update for the first-generation Galaxy A8 Duos in India

Samsung has today started rolling out the Android 6.0.1 update for the first-generation Galaxy A8 Duos in India. In addition to all of the new features included in Marshmallow, the upgrade also transports the September security patch to the handset, which carries a handful of much-needed patches for both the OS and hardware to make it more stable and secure.

The update itself weighs in at around 890MB and should be making its way to the unlocked model of the Galaxy A8 Duoos in the region throughout the day. If it doesn’t arrive within the next 24-hours, don’t worry. Due to the sheer amount of devices OTA’s have to reach, Samsung usually distributes them in stages. To see if it’s ready for your unit head into the Settings » About device » Software update.

Thanks, Arjun!

Google Home will reportedly be compatible with Samsung’s SmartThings platform

Along with the upcoming Pixel smartphones, Google is expected to fully announce Google Home, a Wi-Fi speaker that can also act as a voice assistant and a smart home hub. If reports are to be believed, Google’s new Amazon Alexa competitor will be compatible with Samsung’s SmartThings platform.

According to a report from AndroidPolice, the Google Home smart home hub would be compatible with SmartThings and Nest products out of the box. Google Home owners would be able to control SmartThings-connected end devices such as lights and thermostats using voice commands. SmartThings is already compatible with Amazon’s Echo smart speakers with built-in Alexa assistant. As of now, we are unclear as to what range of end devices would Google Home support via SmartThings.

Samsung launched a new lineup of SmartThings smart home devices last year, but the company faced a lot of flak due to security-related issues. The South Korean electronics giant is integrating SmartThings compatibility in a lot of products including its SUHD TVs and the Gear lineup of smartwatches. It is being reported that Google will unveil two new smartphones – Pixel and Pixel XL – as well as a 4K Chromecast, a new Wi-Fi router, the Daydream VR platform, and possible a new mobile operating system codenamed ‘Andromeda’ at an event on October 4.
