Samsung starts distributing a much-needed maintenance update for the Galaxy Note Edge in Europe

Samsung has today started rolling out a beefy maintenance update for the unlocked model of the Galaxy Note Edge in Europe. The upgrade is identical to the release that the firm began distributing for the Galaxy Note 4 in the region a little over a week ago, bringing a flurry of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations to the handset, as well as all of the fixes included in the October security patch.

The full changelog can be seen below:

• Stability Improvements
• Bug Fixes
• Improved core features
• Android Security Patch (October 1)

It’s worth noting that this is likely the last maintenance update that the Galaxy Note Edge will receive as it’s now approaching the end of the two year support period that Samsung promises to upgrade devices for. If you own a Galaxy Note Edge and would like to see if the OTA — firmware version XXU1DPJ1 — is ready for your handset, head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually.

Sam’s Club will hold a neat Black Friday sale on Samsung Smart TVs

Shortly after T-Mobile’s alleged Black Friday deals leaked online, popular membership-only retailer Sam’s Club full list of promotions were prematurely posted on GottaDEAL. Unlike T-Mo, Sam’s Club won’t be holding any sales on smartphones. Instead, it will be offering two of Samsung’s latest 4K Smart TVs for unbeatable prices.

First up we have a 75-inch 4K LED 3D Smart TV, which usually carries a price tag of $2,599. However, during the promotional period it’ll be available for just $1,998. Its slightly larger, curved counterpart will also be up for grabs in the sale for $3,498. That’s a total saving of $1,499 off its usual retail price of $4,997.

It’s worth noting that these deals aren’t confirmed, and it’s perfectly possible that on the big day the retailer will post a flurry of additional products to its website for reduced prices. Some Gear S2 owners are experiencing issues with email notifications after installing the latest Gear Manager update

Samsung recently started rolling out a rather hefty update for its Gear Manager application. However, it doesn’t look like things are going as smoothly as the company would have hoped. Several Gear S2 owners have taken to the Android Central forums to complain that they’re unable to view incoming emails on their smartwatch after installing the upgrade on their companion smartphone.

Prior to installing the update, users received a notification on their watch displaying the date, time, subject and the first couple of sentences when a new email surfaced in their inbox. However, the wearable is now reportedly displaying an alert saying that it “can’t show the email for security reasons” and that users should  attempt to “view it on [their] phone” instead.

It’s currently unclear whether the glitch is affecting all email accounts. Although, one user has reported that notifications are being delivered in the standard format for his Gmail and Outlook accounts, but are not for Exchange. After having a discussion with his IT guys, he was able to confirm that “nothing has changed over the last few days on their end,” which means that it must be a problem that Samsung introduced with the update.

Galaxy S8′s intelligent assistant might be called Bixby

Samsung announced its acquisition of Viv Labs last month, it’s an artificial intelligence startup founded by the people that created Siri. Viv Labs has created a unique, open artificial intelligence platform which enables third-party developers to build conversational assistants like Siri, the platform also enables them to integrate a natural language-based interface in apps and services. It has since been rumored that the Galaxy S8 is going to feature an AI assistant powered by this startup’s technology.

The company has filed for a trademark in South Korea, it seeks protection of the word “Bixby,” the application details that this brand will be used for “computer software for personal information management,” “computer application software for smartphones, mobile telephones, portable computers and tablet computers, Namely, software used to operate voice recognition system” and “computer software for enabling hands-free use of a mobile phone through voice recognition.”

It’s obviously just speculation right now that the Galaxy S8′s intelligent assistant might be called Bixby but the timing is what makes the whole thing seem plausible. These trademark applications do have a way of tipping us about new services before they’re actually launched so I wouldn’t rule out the possibility completely yet. Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy S8 in February next year.

Updated Gear Manager app brings improved UI and Gear S3 compatibility

Samsung recently started taking pre-orders for its newest smartwatch, the Gear S3, in some countries. To that end, the company has also released a new version of its Gear Manager app, adding support for the Gear S3. The update started rolling out today, and it also brings in a bunch of improvements as well as bug fixes.

Apart from adding support for the Gear S3, the new update brings the look and feel of the app in-line with that of the Grace UX. The app is now divided into two tabs: Info and Settings. The Info tab now shows current battery level of the connected Gear device. You can also check app-wise battery consumption since last full charge, which makes it easier to find misbehaving apps. In our case, we discovered that the Uber app on our Gear S2 was misbehaving and randomly launching all by itself.

The Settings tab is similar to the earlier version, but looks cleaner, thanks to better use of the white space and new icons. The Info tab also has shortcuts to suggested apps and watch faces. If you haven’t received the update yet, check for it manually in the Play Store or Galaxy Apps store.
