This Samsung app might be teasing the Galaxy S8

We just reported on the Galaxy S7 Secure Folder app that’s floating online. You can download it right now on your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge and provided that it’s running Android 7.0 Nougat, Secure Folder will work even though Samsung is yet to release it officially. The company did say last month that it would release Secure Folder for the Galaxy S7 as a downloadable feature once Nougat was rolled out.

It appears that the app is teasing the Galaxy S8 in a way. When you launch the app after installing it on the Galaxy S7 for the first time you’ll see that it includes a render which appears to be quite similar to what we expect the Galaxy S8 to look like. Almost all of the renders and leaked images of the Galaxy S8 that we’ve seen so far suggest that it’s going to look similar to what we see in this render.

While this isn’t a groundbreaking discovery in any shape or form, it goes to show that we can reasonably expect Samsung’s next flagship smartphone to come with significant design changes as compared to the Galaxy S7.

Galaxy S7 Secure Folder app surfaces, it works!

Samsung introduced the Secure Folder feature with the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 last year. It’s a protected folder in which users can store files, media, documents, contacts and other personal content completely separate from all of the other content on their device. The Secure Folder does not open until the user authenticates their identity using the fingerprint scanner.

Samsung confirmed last year when it was running the Galaxy Beta Program for the Galaxy S7 that it would release the Galaxy S7 Secure Folder as a downloadable service after Nougat was released. The company started rolling out Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge last month and now the Galaxy S7 Secure Folder app has surfaced online. We’ve tried it out and it works!

The Secure Folder app is now available for download from our APK page, bear in mind that your handset needs to be running Nougat in order for it to work. You won’t find a listing for this app on the Google Play Store or Galaxy Apps right now because it appears that Samsung hasn’t released it publicly as yet. However, now that a build of the Secure Folder app for Galaxy S7 is floating online, it may not be that long before Samsung officially releases it.

Our new YouTube show ‘Blast From The Past’ takes you down memory lane

If you’re a regular reader of SamMobile you might have noticed that we’ve started some new projects on YouTube such as the Top Stories In Two Minutes segment in which we provide a quick rundown of all of the Samsung-related news from that day. We’ve now launched a new YouTube show called “Blast from the Past” which will take you down memory lane.

The new show is going to highlight Samsung products from years gone by, products that were the center of attention when they first arrived on the scene. In the very first episode of Blast from the past, we’re looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 which the company was due to launch at IFA 2011 but had to pull it out of the show due to an injunction won by Apple.

Samsung named Malaysia’s top smartphone manufacturer in 2016

Samsung has been titled by the International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker as Malaysia’s top smartphone manufacturer in 2016. It’s believed that the Galaxy Note 7 debacle had a minimal impact on the firm’s performance in the region (it’s a shame the same can’t be said about the United States) as its high-end smartphones aren’t popular amongst consumers. Instead, the release of the refreshed, well-built Galaxy J series, attracted a lot of attention from budget-conscious customers, providing it with the sales figures it needed to maintain its position at the top of the table.

The latest statistics reveal that there were approximately 2.7 million smartphone shipments in Malaysia during Q4 2012, bringing 2016 to a close with around a total of 8.8 million units shipped. “The market situation led local resellers to opt to upsell brands that not only have better margins, but have become popular with consumers, mainly Samsung and China brands such as Huawei, OPPO, and vivo. Budget- and brand-conscious consumers are increasingly opting for brands that have become globally renowned via aggressive marketing initiatives and well-built devices,” says Jensen Ooi, market analyst at IDC Asia/Pacific.

Samsung heir’s mentor likely to steer the ship for now

Samsung is in troubled waters. The vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and heir to the conglomerate Lee Jae-yong was arrested last week on charges of bribery. He allegedly paid millions of dollars in bribes to win the government’s support for a controversial 2015 merger between two Samsung affiliates. While the investigation is still ongoing, his detention means that there’s now a leadership vacuum at the conglomerate, even though the company says that despite the arrest it’s going to be business as usual.

Former executives and company insiders believe that the Samsung scion’s arrest might hamper decisions on strategic investments and acquisitions even though many of its affiliates are led by very competent leaders. Big calls are most likely going to be made by Choi Gee-sung, he’s the top lieutenant at the conglomerate and a mentor to Lee. “Choi is very experienced and has done a good job. He is the one best placed to manage group-level affairs in Lee’s absence,” said one Samsung insider quoted in a Reuters report.

Another executive at Samsung’s future strategy office, the control tower of the conglomerate, said that everything has virtually stopped and that they are mainly focusing on the prosecutor’s investigation into Lee and the company. “We’ll be running an emergency plan and everything will be under Choi’s control for now,” the unnamed executive added.

However, with Choi also under investigation by special prosecutors, some believe that even his role might be limited and that Samsung might have to lean more on the top management of each of its affiliates. Since it has already been decided to dismantle the strategy office once the investigation concludes, Choi’s role in the management of the conglomerate’s affairs is likely to decrease.

Samsung declined to comment on this report so it has nothing to say right now about its management plans in Lee’s absence or Choi’s role.

Samsung’s reputation suffers biggest drop in the United States

The 2017 Reputation Quotient Ratings by Harris Poll shows that Samsung’s reputation has suffered its biggest drop in recent years in the United States. Among the 100 corporations that were surveyed, Samsung came in on No. 49. Compared to 2015, Samsung’s reputation quotient fell by 46 spots as back then it was ranked at No. 3 even higher than Apple and Google. Samsung has held on to a spot in the top ten over the past three years and just last year the company came in seventh place.

The Harris Poll Reputation Quotient surveys the general public regarding the reputation of the most visible companies in the United States. Around 2.3 million American consumers participated in this survey. It evaluates public perception about these companies across 20 attributes which are further classified into six categories of corporate reputation such as financial performance, workplace environment, vision and leadership, social responsibility, emotional appeal, products and services.

Samsung’s reputation is said to have suffered a blow due to the failure of the Galaxy Note 7 as well as the recent legal troubles of its heir Lee Jae-yong who was jailed last week on bribery charges. He’s the first leader in Samsung’s nearly eight-decade history to be jailed in a criminal investigation.
