Second-generation Gear 360 shows up at the FCC

The much-rumored ‘Gear 360 Pro‘ has today been spotted on the FCC’s online database, though it would appear that Samsung has dropped the ‘Pro’ branding previously associated with the device (SM-R210), and will retain the ‘Gear 360′ moniker — or brand it as the ‘Next Gear 360‘ — when it launches. 

Unfortunately, the documentation filed with the FCC is heavily redacted, so we don’t know exactly what to expect with regards to specific camera details. However, an included 3D render reveals that it’s set to be a smaller (45mm in width), handheld device, scrapping the tripod design that debuted on last year’s model.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus to go up for pre-order in South Korea on Friday, April 7

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus were previously rumored to go up for pre-order worldwide on Monday, April 10, and officially on sale in-store on Friday, April 21, but a new report fresh out of South Korea claims that Samsung’s brought the date forward to Friday, April 7 in the region.

It’s believed that Samsung three Korean carriers will accept pre-orders for the devices through Monday, April 17. After a (likely sleepless) night of arranging orders, there will be a special “Galaxy S8 pre-launch event” the following day — Tuesday, April 18 — at some operators brick-and-mortar stores.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear whether the hands will still be available to pre-order in other countries on Monday, April 10. The report does state, however, that the official sale date of the handset is set as Friday, April 21 — so it certainly seems feasible that customers will be able to reserve one a week in advance.

December security patch makes its way to the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 in Europe

A new update is arriving on the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 in Europe. Unfortunately, the upgrade doesn’t bring Nougat to the device (I mean, why would it?). It does, however, transport all of the bug fixes and stability improvements present in the December security patch.

If you own a Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 and would like to see if the OTA (XXS0BPL1) is ready for your device open up the Settings menu, then select the relevant option from the Software Update section under the About Device subheading.

Galaxy S8 release date for Canada leaked

There has been a lot of speculation recently about the Galaxy S8 release date. We already know that the handset is going to be launched on March 29 but Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to be rolled out. Previous reports suggested that it would be released on April 21 but then a contradictory report surfaced which claimed that the release had been delayed by one week to April 28.

We’ve come across a new report today which claims to have received information about the Galaxy S8 release date for Canada from a “senior supply chain source with knowledge of one Canadian cell carrier’s plans.” The report claims that Galaxy S8 pre-orders will be shipped out in Canada on April 28.

Flagship smartphones often go on sale in the United States and Canada on the same day so it’s very likely that April 28 is when the Galaxy S8 makes it way to the US as well. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S8 in most markets across the globe on the same day so this might mean that customers across the globe will be able to get their hands on the new flagship come April 28.

Nothing has been officially confirmed as yet, though, so we must wait for Samsung to make the announcement which it’s going to do on March 29.

Samsung may supply iPhone processors once again starting next year

Apple has long sourced iPhone processors from Samsung but over the years it has shifted the business almost entirely to Taiwan’s TSMC. Even the handset that’s due this year, widely known as the iPhone 8, is expected to be powered by the 10nm A11 chip manufactured exclusively by TSMC.

However, according to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung is interested in winning back Apple’s business. It’s reportedly making “supplemental investments” in its 10nm production lines next month and will build out its 7nm facilities in 2018. It’s apparently advancing work on the 7nm facilities to get a headstart on TSMC.

This leads many to believe that Samsung is trying to win orders for next year’s iPhone which may have an A12 chip based on the 7nm process. It remains to be seen if Apple turns to Samsung once again, though, following all of the controversies it had to put up with for the iPhone 6. The Samsung-supplied chips for the iPhone 6 were claimed to be less power efficient and more prone to heating up compared to the chips made by TSMC.

Apple and Samsung still remain in business, though, as the former continues to source displays from its rival. Samsung is even expected to be the major supplier of OLED displays for this year’s iPhone.

Samsung on track to ramp up 10nm FinFET process technology production

Samsung today announced that it’s on track to ramp up production of the 10nm FinFET process technology with steady high yield in order to meet customer needs on schedule. The company has shipped more than 70,000 silicon wafers of its first-generation 10nm LPE (Low Power Early) to date after starting the industry’s first mass production of 10LTE in October last year. Both the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Samsung’s Exynos 8895 are based on the 10nm process.

“Samsung’s 10nm LPE is a game changer in the foundry industry. Following the 10LPE version, the 10nm LPP and LPU will enter mass production by the end of the year and next year, respectively.” said Jongshik Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung has also announced the addition of the 8nm and the 6nm process technologies to its existing process roadmap. These new process technologies will provide improved scalability, performance and power advantages compared to existing process nodes. All of the innovations from the latest 10nm and 7nm technology will be ported over to 8nm and 6nm processes.

The company is going to share more details about its foundry technology roadmap as well as the technical details at the U.S. Samsung Foundry Forum that’s due to take place on May 24th.
