Galaxy S8 Tip: Change the app shortcuts on the lock screen

Have your shiny new Galaxy S8 or S8+ all set up and wondering if there is a way to swap those phone and camera shortcuts on the lockscreen with a shortcut to other apps? There most certainly is. It’s been an option on all Samsung devices in recent years, and it’s present on the company’s newest flagships as well. It makes a lot of sense, too, as the camera can always be launched with a double press of the power button (unless you live in India), and the phone app isn’t exactly important for every user.

Here’s how you can change the app shortcuts on the lockscreen on your Galaxy S8 or S8+:

Step 1: Open the phone’s settings from the app drawer or by hitting the gear icon in the notification shade.

Step 2: Go into the Lock screen and security menu.

Step 3: Here, go into App shortcuts.

Step 4: Simply change each shortcut to the app you want. That’s it.

Samsung’s delayed management reshuffle sees 54 execs get promoted

Samsung has a tradition of shaking up the top management of the company at the end of every year to rotate talent across the company’s various business divisions. This exercise normally takes place in December every year but it had to be delayed last year due to the various legal troubles that Samsung was involved in.

While some of those challenges still persist, Samsung has finally followed through with its delayed management reshuffle which has seen 54 executives being promoted to bigger roles. “Samsung will minimize uncertainties through the latest reshuffle. We will make all-out efforts to achieve this year’s management goals,” the company said in a statement.

A total of 11 executives have been named as senior vice presidents while 6 executives including the head of enterprise business for the visual display unit Kim Seok-ki and head of South American operations Kim Jung-hwan were promoted as executive vice presidents.

Executive Vice President Tim Baxter has been appointed as the head of Samsung Electronics America while Executive Vice President Choi Kyung-sil will now perform his duties as chief of the strategy marketing office.

Samsung is not yet done with the management reshuffle just yet. It’s going to announce management changes at its display and chip divisions in the next few days.

Galaxy J3 (2017) will also be launched in the Netherlands alongside the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 (2017)

Samsung is expected to launch the new Galaxy J series in the coming months. It has been over a year since the Galaxy J (2016) series was released so it’s about time that Samsung followed up with the new lineup. Previous reports suggested that only the Galaxy J5 (2017) and Galaxy J7 (2017) will be released in the Netherlands but that may not be the case.

According to a new report, the Galaxy J3 (2017) is also going to be launched in the Netherlands, meaning that the entire new Galaxy J series will be available for purchase in the country. This means that it’s also likely for all three handsets to be released in most markets in Europe.

As far as the specifications are concerned, the Galaxy J3 (2017) is believed to feature a 5-inch 720p display, an Exynos 7570 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB of Nougat. Additional specs may include a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as well as a 2,400mAh battery. Like the other handsets in the refreshed series, it will run Android 7.0 Nougat.

None of this has been officially confirmed by Samsung as yet. The company hasn’t said anything about when the new Galaxy J series is going to be launched so far.

Samsung Z4 breaks cover in leaked press render

Two months ago, Samsung’s first Tizen 3.0-powered smartphone — the Samsung Z4 — passed through the FCC, then a couple of weeks later it was certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, leading us to believe that its release was imminent. Strangely, chatter died down shortly after, but was brought back to life when the handset’s user manual surfaced last month.

However, ever since we first caught wind of the Samsung Z4, it hasn’t broken cover once. We’ve only had some rough sketches to go on. Up until now, that is. Earlier today, the folks over at Tizen Cafe released a leaked press render, showing the front of the device off in all its glory. Although, to be brutally honest, it’s nothing to get excited about.

Aside from a front-facing LED flash, the device appears to be pretty similar to its predecessor, the Samsung Z3 — and it’s not expected to support dramatically different internals, either. We’re probably looking at a 5-inch display, a quad-core processor, 1.5/2GB of RAM, an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2,050mAh battery.

Galaxy Note 7R listings start to surface in China

Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to release the refurbished Galaxy Note 7. It announced a few weeks back that refurbished units of the ill-fated flagship will be released in select markets soon. The markets may include South Korea and China. Listings for the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 have already started popping up on online merchants in China.

It was reported yesterday that the Galaxy Note 7R could be launched in South Korea as early as this month. Samsung is going to apply for a safety certification soon from the certifying authority in South Korea before it releases the handset in its home country. Reports suggest that it will be priced 50 percent less than what the Galaxy Note 7 cost.

The listings that have appeared online for the Galaxy Note 7R in China mention a price between 3,599 – 3,999 CNY or $521 – $572. This may not be the exact official price that Samsung charges for this handset but it’s likely to be priced in a similar range.

Some of the images of the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 that have appeared online recently show that these units will have the letter “R” printed prominently on the back. This will signify that the unit is a refurbished variant and will thus prevent scammers from selling an original, recalled version of the Galaxy Note 7 as a refurbished unit.

Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM launched in Hong Kong

We reported two weeks ago that Samsung was going to launch the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage in Hong Kong soon. Samsung is only selling this variant of its flagship handset in select markets and the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong is one of them.

The 6GB Galaxy S8+ has been launched in Hong Kong in addition to the 4GB variant with 64GB of storage that has been released globally. Samsung is selling the 4GB and 6GB variants of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ for HK $6,390 ($82) and HK $6,998 ($898) respectively in Hong Kong.

Samsung has confirmed today that it’s going to start shipping units to customers who place an order now by May 25th. It’s likely going to be an unlocked model which means that it won’t be locked to a particular carrier. This means that it will be possible to buy a 6GB Galaxy S8+ in Hong Kong and use it anywhere else in the world.

Other than the increased RAM and storage, it’s the same Galaxy S8+ that has been out for several weeks now. It features the same 6.2-inch 1440 x 2960 pixel resolution display, Snapdragon 835 processor, 12-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera, facial recognition, iris scanner, Android 7.0 Nougat and more.
