High-end W2017 clamshell successor potentially spotted at TENAA

Samsung may be working on a successor to its high-end W2017 flip phone. Earlier today, a handset — dubbed the W2018 — was spotted on Chinese telecommunication authority TENAA’s online database.

The documentation reveals that the W2018, which carries the model number SM-G9298, sports two 4.2-inch Full HD displays, a Snapdragon 821AB chipset, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP camera and a 2,300mAh non-removable battery.

Overall, it’s a pretty minor upgrade from its predecessor (in fact, the only thing that’s changed is the processor), leading many to believe that it’s a revamped model of the W017 for the European market, and not a successor.

While that could be the case, it’s unlikely seeing as people actually want to purchase high-end Android clamshell smartphones in China and South Korea, but demand appears to be non-existent in countries like England and France.

T-Mobile releases May security patch for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Just a few days after it started rolling out the May 2017 security patch for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, T-Mobile has now released said security patch for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The company went ahead with the release on a holiday weekend in the United States so it may come as a bit of a surprise to users.

Since these devices have already been updated to Android 7.0 Nougat by T-Mobile, it’s not like users will get much in the way of new features. This update only brings the May 2017 security patch alongside system-wide tweaks and improvements.

T-Mobile is rolling out firmware version G930TUVS4BQE1 for the Galaxy S7 and G935TUVS4BQE1 for the Galaxy S7 edge. Once the update is installed, users will see that their devices are on the May 1, 2017 Android security patch level.

The May security patch for Samsung devices fixes 54 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS and also brings fixes for 11 vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s own software.

T-Mobile is rolling out the update over-the-air for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge owners in the United States. The relevant firmware files are also available for download from our firmware section for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Samsung’s $13,000 refrigerator is made with porcelain

If you’re in the market for a new refrigerator and have more money that you know what to do with, perhaps you might want to consider the new high-end refrigerator that Samsung has announced today. It’s made with porcelain materials and has thus been priced at the higher-end of the spectrum.

The new refrigerator is part of Samsung’s Chef Collection. It has a unique interior design complete with Korean white porcelain. A lot of work went into developing this product.

Samsung was very involved in the material discovery stage. The development and design team visited seven different countries over two years and conducted hundreds of tests to select the best materials for the Chef Collection Porcelain.

It actually makes sense to use porcelain in a refrigerator. The material doesn’t have pores on its surface so it’s not prone to discoloration or smell, particularly when something like sauce or soup is spilled on it. It can easily be wiped with water to achieve that new look once again.

It’s not just a dumb fridge. The Chef Collection Porcelain has a Family Hub that provides access to various apps for shopping, entertainment, food management and more. There’s even support for voice recognition.

You can imagine that this product isn’t going to be cheap. Samsung is going to sell it in South Korea in black color for 14.9 million won or just over $13,000. That’s quite a bit more than what the average consumer would spend on a refrigerator.

Video shows Samsung’s stretchable OLED display in action

Samsung unveiled the world’s first stretchable OLED display at the Society for Information Display 2017 in Los Angeles. The company says that it’s a unique display because it can bend in both directions. It’s unlike flexible panels that Samsung has shown off in the past that can only bend in one direction.

The company has claimed that its stretchable OLED display can be stretched by up to 12 millimeters when pressure is applied without losing a high degree of resolution. A 9.1-inch version of this display was showcased at SID 2017 last week.

Samsung Display has now posted a video on its official YouTube channel which shows the stretchable display in action. We can see that when the screen is pressed from above, it depresses like a rubber balloon and returns to its original flat shape. There’s enough elasticity in the panel to recover even when it’s stretched up or down.

The company says that it has developed this new technology with a high level of scalability with the ability to maintain original image quality which increasing the screen to a depth of up to 12mm when pressed. Samsung sees practical applications for this display in wearable, Internet of Things, automotive and artificial intelligence markets.

Samsung says the Galaxy S8 is selling twice as fast as the Galaxy S7

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on March 29 and then released the new flagship in select markets across the globe on April 21. The initial response from customers has been good.

Samsung was able to bring in more than one million pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 in its home country of South Korea which was a new record for the company. It has now revealed that the Galaxy S8 is selling twice as fast as the Galaxy S7 in South Korea.

The company has confirmed that ever since it launched the Galaxy S8 in South Korea on April 21, it has sold more than one million units of the handset.

“The phone’s predecessors S6 and S7 hit the 1 million mark in 75 and 74 days since their launch, respectively. The S8 is selling almost two times faster than that,” a Samsung official said.

Samsung has seen a similar response from customers across the globe who really have taken a liking to its new flagship device. The company recently revealed that global shipments of the Galaxy S8 have exceeded 10 million units since launch.

The Galaxy S8 is expected to break all previous flagship sales records for Samsung even though the handset is slightly more expensive than its predecessors.

Samsung will stream select live action UFC, X-Games and Live Nation events for Gear VR

Samsung today announced VR Live Pass on Gear VR, it’s a lineup of global live entertainment partnerships with UFC, X-Games and Live Nation. The company is going to stream select live events, enabling viewers to enjoy virtual reality broadcasts of action sports and music events using the Gear VR.

The VR Live Pass on Gear VR events is going to be available through the Samsung VR app early next month. Gear VR users can use this app to view live entertainment events and performance regardless of wherever they are.

“Partnering with these companies to expand our VR services helps us to open up a new gateway of opportunities for fans and demonstrate our commitment to delivering experiences that make the seemingly impossible, possible,” said Younghee Lee, CMO and EVP, Samsung Electronics.

The broadcasts will start next month and will include UFC 212: Aldo vs. Holloway. It will be the first time in UFC history that an event will be live streamed in virtual reality. VR content will also include pre-event and post-event show highlights.

X Games Minneapolis, the biggest action sports event of the year, will be streamed live in VR as well. Live Nation, the largest live event company in the world, will organize a live music concert with an international artist in August which will be streamed live for Gear VR users.

Samsung says that these partnerships will provide Gear VR users with an unrivaled “live pass” to shows and that they will be able to access all of this content for free.
