SamMobile Daily Recap: June 19, 2017 — Frame TV, Galaxy S8 Active and more!

Galaxy S8 Active referenced on Samsung’s website

The upcoming Galaxy S8 Active (SM-G892A) has been referenced in a document, which outlines all of the applications it will ship with, on Samsung’s website, leading us to believe that the handset’s launch is right around the corner.

Judging by recent leaks, the Galaxy S8 Active is simply a flat version of the Galaxy S8, equipped with a slightly thicker body that’s more resistant to knocks and bumps, and presumably compliant with the MIL-STD-810G standard of durability.

Not much is known about the handset’s internals, but we’re guessing they’re identical to the regular Galaxy S8, so it should come with a 5.8-inch AMOLED display, an Exynos 88955 processor and 4GB of RAM.

That said, we aren’t ruling out the possibility of the Galaxy S8 Active having a slightly larger 3,500mAh battery as Samsung has installed beefier cells in its Active-branded smartphones in the past.

With regards to availability, the Galaxy S8 Active is expected to launch exclusively through AT&T in the US, and as we’ve said in the past, the carrier typically launches its latest Active smartphones in June — so keep your eyes peeled.

Download and watch these brilliant HDR videos on your Galaxy S8, S8+, and Tab S3

Samsung’s new mobile devices – Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy Tab S3, and Galaxy Book – feature high-resolution screens that are capable of displaying HDR (High Dynamic Range) content.  However, there’s finding HDR content is a task, and you won’t find it easily. Netflix still hasn’t started supporting these Samsung devices for HDR video streaming. A Redditor has compiled a collection of thirteen HDR videos that work with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and you can download them.

All these are 10-bit 4K HDR (HDR10) videos from BBC Planet Earth, LG, Samsung, and Sony, and they’re HDR10 standard compatible, so they’ll work find on the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy Tab S3, and the Galaxy Book. Make sure that you increase the brightness to 100% and change the display mode to AMOLED Cinema from the Settings menu. It will work with Samsung’s stock video player. You can download these videos from the source or via links below.

Note: If some of the file names of these videos are not ending with .mp4, change it to .mp4 from the file manager and it should work properly. These videos can’t be played properly with third-party video players. You have to use Samsung Video Player.

Galaxy J3 (2016) gets May 2017 Android security patch

Although Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy J3 (2017) along with some other Galaxy J (2017) series smartphones, the company hasn’t forgotten its older devices. The Galaxy J3 (2016), an entry-level smartphone that was launched in March last year, has received May 2017 Android security patch with the latest software update.

The Galaxy J3 (2016) has started receiving a 143.13MB update to firmware version J320FNXXU0AQE1, bringing bug fixes, performance improvements, and May 2017 security patch to the device. However, the phone still remains at Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and the company hasn’t updated it to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) even now, let along Android 7.0 (Nougat).

The update is currently being rolled out to unlocked variants of the Galaxy J3 (2016) in European markets and India, and it could soon be rolled out to other countries soon. The device previously received March security patch in Europe. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can check for it manually by heading to the Software Update section in the Settings menu.

Google has launched an exclusive Play Music feature for the Galaxy S8

If you cast your mind back to April, you may recall that Google announced it had teamed up with Samsung to give Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ customers who use Play Music, which is the default audio player on the handsets, a couple of extra perks to enhance their music-listening experience.

Despite being relatively minor, the perks were actually pretty useful: users could upload 100,000 songs to their virtual locker instead of the usual 50,000, and were eligible for a free three-month trial of Play Music All Access. Now, however, the firm has released an exclusive feature for the devices.

It’s called New Release Radio and — you guessed it — is a personalized mix of the freshest songs — but it’s not really the groundbreaking ‘feature’ we were hoping for. After all, it’s just a radio station that Google could quite easily deliver to every user, and probably will in the future.

Samsung SDI encourages engineers to become ‘technology meisters’

Samsung SDI, Samsung’s battery manufacturing arm, faced a lot of difficulties after it came under fire for supplying faulty Galaxy Note 7 batteries to Samsung Electronics last year. The company got itself a new leader after it suffered fire at its China factory. Samsung SDI has also planned to invest $128 million this year to improve battery safety. Now, the company is encouraging its engineers to become ‘technology meisters’.

According to a new report from The Korea Herald, Samsung SDI is offering its engineers financial incentives to improve their professional skills. The company said last week that it has added seventeen additional members to its existing group of 36 technology meisters (engineers who hold at least three master certificates), taking the total number to 53. The company had started the Technology Meister program in 2013 at its Gumi plant in North Gyeongsang Province and expanded it to its plants in Ulsan, Cheongju and Cheonan.

It usually takes one year for engineers to complete one master certification, and the company offers them additional compensation and points to their performance evaluation for each new certification. Around 150 engineers in the company are now hoping to become technology meisters. “We should pay more attention to the meister system as it can create an opportunity for employees’ self-improvement and also create an academic atmosphere within the company,” said the company CEO Jun Young-hyun.

Kim Song-hak is one of the engineers at Samsung SDI, and he has worked for the company for 12 years and acquired 10 master certification over the past five years. He said, “the technology meister system helped me to take a step forward. It is necessary to learn theories and functions for more efficient work. If there is no knowledge of production sites, it is hard to respond to troubles of facilities initially.”
