Samsung to launch smart building IoT system next week

Samsung will unveil an Internet of Things (IoT) system that uses artificial intelligence to automate the management of buildings on October 18, reports The Korea Herald. The concept, which has been dubbed b.IoT, will automatically control temperature and lighting using data obtained by sensors housed in closed-circuit TV units.

It’s not difficult to see where b.IoT will come in use. The system can turn on climate systems ahead of the arrival of workers and detect in real-time when a room is not being used to cut off the power. It can also be used in unison with existing security features to better protect corporate features, according to Samsung.

IoT use has been centered on homes, but that’s about to change

“In the past IoT use has generally been centered on home applications, but if it can be applied to buildings it can greatly expand scale of the market,” a Samsung executive said. “There has been overseas interest in the new solution and by using company buildings as test beds and working out any bugs Samsung can move to tap into the export market.”

Samsung may have dibs on the Snapdragon 845 for Galaxy S9

If a new report is to be believed, Samsung is going to have dibs on the Snapdragon 845 for the Galaxy S9. It had a similar deal with Qualcomm this year as well for the Galaxy S8. Samsung manufactured Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor and got to keep the initial batch for itself. That’s why early this year there was no other Snapdragon 835-powered handset on the market other than the Galaxy S8.

It appears that this might be the case for the Galaxy S9 as well. Qualcomm might return to Samsung in order to get its new chip manufactured. If that happens, Samsung is likely going to want to keep the initial batch of the Snapdragon 845 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Dibs On Snapdragon 845 for Galaxy S9

There isn’t a lot of technical information available about the Snapdragon 845 as yet. However, more information is expected to surface in the coming days.

As far as availability is concerned, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will likely be the first handsets to come with Qualcomm’s latest chip. This means that rivals like LG would have to go through yet another flagship cycle without access to Qualcomm’s latest chip.

Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S9 early next year. There are rumors about the handset being launched a month earlier than usual. It’s not uncommon for these rumors to come up before a new flagship’s launch, doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen.

Should you watch Netflix using your Gear VR? Probably not

Chances are you’ve experienced Netflix at least once in your life, but it’s unlikely it was through a Gear VR—and take it from us, that’s probably a good thing. We’ve been playing around with the client for the past week to fill you in on the good, the bad and the ugly.

Let’s not beat around the bush: Netflix for the Gear VR is plagued with inconvenience the second you open the application. Instead of using the accompanying Controller to input your account details, you need to select each letter by moving your head.

It’s a good thing the backspace button is huge, because you’re bound to make a ton of mistakes.

I’m not kidding here. While entering my email address and password, with my chin rested on my hand, I must have made at least ten mistakes, caused by moving ever so slightly after tapping the Controller to select a letter.

It would be much better if the application let you enter your credentials using your smartphone’s keyboard before popping it into the Gear VR, then maybe—just maybe—you wouldn’t start the experience feeling frustrated.

Once you’ve signed in, you’ll find yourself sitting on a red sofa with panoramic views of snow-topped mountains to the left, upmarket decor to the right and a giant TV screen in front of you. It’s the plushest setting imaginable to Netflix and…erm…(not) chill.

The interface is not dissimilar to what you’d find on a Smart TV; select your profile, choose a show, then you’re good to go. I decided to watch a couple of episodes of Narcos. It felt a little unnatural at first, but within a few minutes I was immersed in my own virtual world.

After around half an hour, however, the headset felt quite uncomfortable and my eyes were strained. Naturally, I began to question whether I’d set my Gear VR up correctly, so I asked my friends if they’d had the same experience. They had and advised me to take a short break.

If you like to binge-watch your favorite shows, Netflix for the Gear VR is definitely not for you.

I’m not sure about you, but having to take a break after watching half an hour of an hour-long show isn’t exactly ideal. If you’re anything like me—and this happened on more than one occasion—you’ll forget what’s happened by the time you pick your Gear VR back up.

Netflix for the Gear VR isn’t terrible

That’s about all there is to say about Netflix for the Gear VR. It isn’t a terrible experience, but it’s far from ideal. If you do decide to give it a go, best remember to plug in a pair of earphones. One-sided audio is the devil’s work.

Galaxy S5 Neo Blueborne fix has been released

The Galaxy S5 Neo Blueborne fix has been released today. Samsung rolled out a similar fix for the Galaxy S5 recently. Samsung updated the handset to Android 7.0 Nougat just last month. The August security patch for the Galaxy S5 Neo also arrived last month.

This latest update only brings the Blueborne fix for this handset. The security patch level has been retained at August 2017. No new features and tweaks are included in this firmware update.

Galaxy S5 Blueborne fix

Blueborne is a Bluetooth-based vulnerability that was recently discovered. It affects Android, Windows and some iOS devices. Samsung has spent the last few weeks rolling out Blueborne fixes for its most popular models.

The Galaxy S5 Neo Blueborne fix will prevent attackers from exploiting this vulnerability. They can do that to gain access to the device without the user even knowing. The vulnerability can be used for malicious code execution which means data can be stolen from the device.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G903FXXS1BQI2 for the Galaxy S5 Neo. It’s rolling out over-the-air and is also available for download from our firmware section.

There’s still no clarity on the Nougat update for this handset in Europe. Samsung has released Nougat for the Galaxy S5 Neo elsewhere but it’s not out in Europe yet.

PSA: LibreLink is no longer compatible with the Galaxy S8

For some strange reason, LibreLink, the popular glucose-monitoring application for Android, is no longer compatible with the Galaxy S8 (and Galaxy S8+). The tool worked when the handset first launched back in April, but has since been disabled by way of an over-the-air maintenance update.

We aren’t sure why exactly Samsung has decided to revoke the required permissions, but some readers believe it has something to do with the handset’s NFC chip not playing nicely with the FreeStyle Libre glucose sensors. That doesn’t, however, explain why it still works on the Galaxy Note 8.

You can’t even sideload the APK. Trust us, we tried. Multiple times. Attempting to do so results in alert appearing, which instructs you to install the application from the Play Store, but seeing as it’s no longer compatible with the Galaxy S8, you can’t—so you get stuck in a vicious loop.

Hopefully compatibility is reinstated soon.
