AT&T releases major security update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

AT&T has released an update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the United States. The upgrade, which weighs in at 135MB, transports all of the security patches included in both September and October’s release, as well as some preventative measures to protect the handset from the BlueBorne exploit.

BlueBorne, for those unaware, is a vulnerability that allows remote hackers to gain complete control of a Bluetooth-enabled computer, smartphone and tablet, even when it’s not set in a discoverable mode—so needless to say if it wasn’t dealt with appropriately, the repercussions would have be catastrophic.

How do I check to see if the update is ready for my Galaxy S7?

To check to see if the release is ready for your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, open Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. If you don’t, however, feel like taking the manual approach, you can always wait until you receive an alert instructing you to install the release.

Samsung launches a try-before-you-buy Galaxy Studio in Malaysia

Samsung has launched one of its famed Galaxy Studio pop-up stores in Malaysia. Located along Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Bukit Bintang, the retail space provides customers with an opportunity to experience the firm’s latest products, including the Galaxy Note 8, Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear VR with Controller.

There are plenty of interactive activities on offer to help you see how each product will fit into your day-to-day life. You can, for example, strap on a Gear Fit2 Pro, mount an exercise cycle, then peddle like you’ve never peddled before, watching your heart rate rise on the wearable in the process.

The Gear Sport, Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier are also on display

The firm also shipped over a couple of DeX Station configurations and a selection of its smartwatches: the Gear Sport, Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier. The pièce de résistance, however, is its Virtual Reality Coaster, which takes advantage of a swaying chair and a Gear VR to simulate a roller coaster.

Samsung will run its Galaxy Studio in Jalan Bukit Bintang until January 31, 2018.

Samsung built a Bitcoin mining rig out of old Galaxy S5s—and it’s more efficient than a computer

Samsung’s found a use for your old Galaxy S5 (and no, it doesn’t matter if it’s smashed to smithereens): Pair it with thirty-nine other units, install a build of the firm’s specialist operating system, which isn’t available just yet, then insert them all into a strange building-like structure to create your very own Bitcoin Miner Cluster that’s capable of mining at a greater power efficiency than a standard desktop computer.

Chances are, you don’t have forty Galaxy S5 units laying around waiting to be used. Heck, we’re the biggest Samsung fan website on the planet and can’t string together ten. But the South Korean isn’t expecting you to recreate its Bitcoin Miner Cluster at home. It is, instead, showing you what you can do with old technology that some may consider old hat—and that’s what its new Upcycling project is all about.

“This innovative platform provides an environmentally responsible way for old Galaxy mobile devices to breathe new life, providing new possibilities and potential extended value for devices that might otherwise be forgotten in desk drawers or discarded,” said Robin Schultz, a spokesperson for Samsung.

Samsung also repurposed an old Galaxy Tab into an Ubuntu-powered laptop

To promote the cause, Samsung also repurposed an old Galaxy Tab into an Ubuntu-powered laptop, used a Galaxy S3 to monitor the climate and PH level of a fish tank, and programmed an old smartphone with facial recognition software to guard the entrance of a house. Those ideas are just scratching the surface, though. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of other uses for its old products.

SoundAssistant is one of Samsung’s best applications, but it isn’t for everyone

Earlier this week, Samsung updated its SoundAssistant application with support for the Galaxy Note 8—and I haven’t been able to put it down since. There’s something about having complete control over all of your handset’s audio preferences that’s oddly satisfying (I know, I know, I’m probably the only person who feels that way).

There isn’t anything to say about SoundAssistant that hasn’t already been said. It’s a must-have tool that allows you to alter the increments at which volume is changed, control the volume of individual applications and configure scenarios that automatically mute/unmute your handset at predetermined times of the day.

You can see how SoundAssistant would be a useful addition to your day-to-day life, right?

My favorite feature, if I’m being completely honest, is having the option to change the volume of each application. When I’m commuting, for example, I engage in a friendly game of Texas Hold’em Poker on Facebook, so being able to listen to the cards shuffle and my music at the same time is..erm…refreshing.

But that’s not all you can do with SoundAssistant. There are a bunch of other hidden features, including Dual App Sound, a feature that allows you to play application sound and the same time as other applications. Be warned, though: if not managed correctly, it can be awfully overwhelming.

SoundAssistant has hundreds, if not thousands, of different applications—and it’s really something you need to try for yourself to see how it could benefit your life. One thing to note, however, is that it can put a persistent notification in your drawer, so if you’re sickened by the thought of them, best steer clear.

Galaxy J5 (2017) now receiving BlueBorne security update in Europe

Samsung has started distributing a new update—J530FXXU1AQI3—for the Galaxy J5 (2017) in Europe, following a rollout of a near-identical upgrade for the Galaxy J7 (2017) last week. The release bundles all 40 patches included in August’s security release, in addition to some measures to protect the handset from the BlueBorne exploit.

There aren’t any new features to play around with

There isn’t a whole lot to say about the update, because let’s be honest: there aren’t any new features to play around with. To check to see if the upgrade is available for your Galaxy J5 (2017) navigate into Settings, tap About Device, then select Download Updates Manually. We’d recommend installing it over a Wi-Fi connection, though.
