Galaxy J6 Plus dummy unit ‘confirms’ side-mounted fingerprint sensor

We have come across enough evidence in the past couple of months showing that Samsung is working on a larger variant of the Galaxy J6, believed to be the Galaxy J6+. Device certifications show the same model might be sold as the Galaxy J6 Prime in some markets. The device was supposed to be just a larger and a slightly more capable variant of the Galaxy J6, as the ‘Plus’ moniker indicates.

However, the CAD renders published online last week made this upcoming model a bit more interesting. The renders showed a side-mounted fingerprint reader, possibly embedded into the power button on the right side of the device, making the Galaxy J6 Plus/Prime possibly the first Samsung smartphone to do so.

Dummy unit offers more evidence of side-mounted fingerprint sensor

The new placement is ‘confirmed’ once again today by Slashleaks through an image of the alleged Galaxy J6 Prime dummy unit. The image shows a side-mounted fingerprint sensor embedded into the power button and a vertical dual-camera setup on the back. The new placement is bound to raise some questions about accuracy and convenience.

As far as the specifications are concerned, we reported exclusively a couple of days back that the Galaxy J6+ will come with 6-inch Infinity display, 13 MP + 5 MP dual-camera setup on the back, 8 MP front camera, a quad-core processor (possibly a Snapdragon 425), 3,300 mAh battery, and Android 8.1 Oreo. The device will be available in 3GB/4GB RAM options and 32GB/64GB storage variants.

Despite the growing ‘evidence,’ nothing is confirmed about the new fingerprint reader placement until Samsung officially launches the Galaxy J6+. One new report says that could happen sometime this later week in India, which sounds plausible given Samsung India’s own teasers about the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ earlier today.

Samsung reportedly not the sole OLED supplier for iPhones any longer

iPhones went through a major redesign last year when Apple launched the iPhone X with a bezel-less display. The company had to swap the LCD for a flexible OLED panel to make the new design possible. Samsung benefitted from this move by emerging as the sole supplier of OLED panels for the iPhone X last year.

There were reports that Apple is looking to cut down its reliance on Samsung Display by roping in LG as the second supplier for OLED panels on its newer models. It appears Apple went ahead and did precisely that, at least according to a joint report by The Investor and ET News. Citing sources, the report states that Apple has selected LG Display (LGD) as the second supplier of flexible OLED panels for its iPhones.

May impact Samsung Display’s revenues

LGD’s sixth-generation flexible OLED panels reportedly cleared a series of quality tests from Apple recently to make this happen. The company is now apparently preparing for mass production of these panels at its E6 plant. The report, however, doesn’t offer any details about when, in which models, and to what extent Apple will use these LG panels.

Samsung Display was expected to make as much as $22 billion in revenue from supplying OLED panels to Apple in 2018. If LG takes a bite out of this, it is bound to have some adverse impact on Samsung Display’s revenues. A sign of approval from Apple would also make it easy for LGD to convince others OEMs to opt for its panels, putting more stress on Samsung Display’s bottom line.

Possible Galaxy S10 benchmark hints at 19:9 display aspect ratio

Hot on the heels of Samsung’s mobile division CEO confirming “significant” design changes for the Galaxy S10, what could be the first benchmark for the tenth-anniversary flagship has popped up online. Interestingly, the benchmark suggests that part of those significant design changes could be a display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. Current Samsung flagships with Infinity displays use the 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

Smaller bezels, or just higher screen resolution?

The benchmark in question is HTML5test, which has published results of an SM-G405F running Android 9.0 Pie. Yes, that model number doesn’t seem correct for a Galaxy S flagship, but Samsung has a history of testing its flagships with fake model numbers ahead of release, and SM-G4xx has often been used for Galaxy S phones. And for the SM-G405F, the benchmark lists a resolution of 412 x 869 pixels, slightly higher than the 412 x 846-pixel resolution listed for the Galaxy S9. It’s a clear hint that the Galaxy S10 display could be taller and points at a slightly increased aspect ratio of 19:9.

The higher aspect ratio also supports rumors of notably reduced bezels on Samsung’s upcoming flagship, although a notch is unlikely to be present on any of the Galaxy S10 models. Well, at least if we go by how Samsung continues to make fun of the notch on competing devices. Nothing can be said for certain at this point, but with the first possible Galaxy S10 benchmark now online, we should see an influx of such appearances as the weeks go by.

Samsung teases the Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+ ahead of launch

We have known for a while now that Samsung is working on a couple of new Galaxy J series handsets – the Galaxy J6+ and the Galaxy J4+ to be precise. The former may also be launched as the Galaxy J6 Prime in some markets. Samsung India has now put up a teaser for both devices on its official website which reveals some features of the upcoming devices such as the Infinity Display and the dual rear camera.

Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+ may arrive soon

We exclusively revealed the specifications of the Galaxy J6+ last week. It will ship with a 6-inch 1480×720 pixel resolution LCD display, possibly the Snapdragon 425 with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There will be a 3,300mAh battery and a 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera system at the back.

The Galaxy J4+ is likely going to have similar specs with one or two core changes to separate the models. It could either be in the form of a different processor, less memory and storage or perhaps a slightly smaller battery. That is as yet unknown.

The teaser for the Galaxy J6+ and the Galaxy J4+ on Samsung India’s website does confirm features like the Infinity Display and the camera’s ability to take shots with decent background blur. This is all standard stuff for Samsung’s mid-range smartphones now. There’s even said to be a new feature called “Emotify,” which at first glance appears to be a simpler version of the AR Emoji feature found on Samsung’s flagships.

We mentioned in our Galaxy J6+ exclusive that the device will have a fingerprint sensor mounted at the side of the device. This has also been confirmed by Samsung India with an image which clearly mentions the “side fingerprint sensor” and suggests that it may be placed under the power button.

From the looks of it, Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy J6+ and the Galaxy J4+ in the near future. Those who are interested can sign up to be notified by Samsung when it launches the device. No word as yet on how much these smartphones are going to cost and what markets they will be available in.

New Galaxy A phone with Snapdragon 845 reportedly in development

There has been a clear distinction between Samsung’s smartphone lineups over the past few years. The best tech, including the latest in mobile silicon, is found in the company’s flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series handsets. Some of that tech then trickles down into its premium mid-range Galaxy A series with other specs like the processor, memory and camera a step or two below the flagships.

Samsung is having to change its strategy a bit as it seeks to compete against its Chinese rivals more effectively. The company has already confirmed that it’s now going to introduce new tech with more affordable models first before bringing it to flagship devices. Does that mean the company will now be making mid-range devices with high-end chips? A China-based leakster claims so.

New Galaxy A phone with Snapdragon 845

A Twitter leakster based in China, who has been right on some accounts, claims that there’s a new Galaxy A phone in development at Samsung with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. That’s the same processor that you find in the flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, the non-Exynos models to be precise.

No further information is available about this device right now. If one were to speculate, it would most likely have a metal build, an Infinity Display, a dual camera system at the back and a good selfie camera up front.

When it does arrive, this new Galaxy A phone will be far from the first affordable device with Qualcomm’s flagship 2018 chip. Xiaomi’s new sub-brand Poco has launched its very first smartphone which puts the Snapdragon 845 in customers’ pocket for $300.

A lot more has to be taken into consideration when forming an opinion about a smartphone’s performance than just the processor inside. Moreover, if Samsung can’t do it at a price that’s competitive enough, then it may not make a lot of sense to try and cram an expensive processor inside what’s supposed to be an affordable device just to respond to rivals.

What’s evident is that Samsung is shaking up its mid-range lineup. As we have reported, the device that it’s going to unveil on October 11th does indeed have four cameras at the back. It would be the company’s first quad-camera smartphone. Given Samsung’s renewed focus on the mid-range segment, a Galaxy A phone with Snapdragon 845 isn’t outside the realm of possibility, but there may not be more here than meets the eye.

Galaxy S10 design changes will be ‘very significant,’ says CEO

The Galaxy S10 will be Samsung’s 10th anniversary flagship and given that the Galaxy S9 was a minor upgrade, fans are hoping for substantial improvements on the company’s next flagship smartphone. DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung’s mobile division, has said that the Galaxy S10 design changes will be “very significant.”

This remark came during a talk with Chinese media earlier in the week. Koh didn’t go into the specifics of these changes and was likely referring to the overall design of the upcoming flagship when compared with the Galaxy S9 which was an incremental update over the Galaxy S8.

Galaxy S10 design changes

Samsung isn’t expected to do anything out of the box with this device, in that the Galaxy S10 won’t be its much-awaited foldable smartphone. It will look very much like a Galaxy S-series flagship but may have an increased screen-to-body ratio and perhaps a slimmer profile.

The Galaxy S10 is also expected to be Samsung’s first smartphone with a triple-camera system. Of the three models that the company might announce, two are believed to feature a triple-camera system at the back. That in itself would add a new design element to the Galaxy S series.

Koh also mentioned that the Galaxy S10 will be offered in “amazing” colors so it’s possible that the company may be cooking up a new color option for the device. Reports suggest that a new green color option may be offered. Samsung hasn’t made a green flagship ever since it offered the Galaxy S6 edge in Emerald Green back in 2015. There’s also a possibility that Samsung could offer gradient color options with its next flagship.

We still have a ways to go before the Galaxy S10 becomes due. Samsung is expected to unveil the device early next year. We will certainly be hearing a lot more rumors about this device before then.
