DisplayMate’s extensive Galaxy S10 display analysis comes out on March 4

DisplayMate has revealed that it will be posting the results for its extensive lab tests of the Galaxy S10’s AMOLED displays on March 4. Samsung had already revealed some of the results from DisplayMate at the Galaxy S10 launch, namely the fact that it has the highest color accuracy of any smartphone display and can achieve a peak brightness level of 1,200 nits. Unlike DxOMark with their camera tests, DisplayMate isn’t offering any more details than what Samsung has already told us.

DisplayMate will probably give the Galaxy S10 an A+ rating and call it the best smartphone display, just like it has with previous Galaxy flagships. However, with the Infinity-O displays in their first generation, it will be interesting to see if Samsung has made some sacrifices in order to achieve the smaller bezels. It probably hasn’t, as we found the display to be excellent and Samsung’s expertise in display technology has reached crazy heights at this point, especially when you look at the Galaxy Fold and its folding AMOLED display.

As Samsung had revealed, the Galaxy S10 display has a few other tricks up its sleeves. It can reduce blue light by 42 percent without sacrificing image quality and display HDR10+ content (and record HDR10+ video with the rear camera). The side bezels on the Galaxy S10 and S10+ are pretty much non-existent at this point, and those who dislike curves can opt for the Galaxy S10e with its flat display.

Galaxy S10+ slays it in DxOMark’s camera tests

The Galaxy S10+ has come out as the best overall phone for smartphone photography in DxOMark’s preliminary testing of Samsung’s latest flagships. With a score of 109 points for the rear cameras and 96 points for the front cameras, the Galaxy S10+ comes out at the top in both, tying with the Huawei P20 Pro and Huawei Mate 20 Pro for the rear camera score and besting every other phone with the selfie score.

Galaxy S10+’ front camera tops all other phones

Last year, when DxOMark started testing front cameras, the Galaxy Note 9 took the crown for the best phone for selfies alongside the Google Pixel 3. The Galaxy S10+’ front camera is an improvement in most aspects over the Note 9’s, partly thanks to the second lens. Some of the pros of the Galaxy S10+ front camera in still imaging include pleasant skin tones, good target exposure, low noise, and accurate and repeatable autofocus, among others.

The cons include dull colors and loss of fine detail in low light conditions and soft faces in group portraits. When it comes to front-facing videos, the Galaxy S10+ keeps noise under control, has good color rendering and skin tones, and “efficient image stabilization.”

Fine detail an issue with the rear cameras

For the rear cameras, the S10+ gets 114 points and 97 points in the photo and video categories. Some of the highlights include accurate white balance and good color rendering, low noise levels in low light conditions, wide dynamic range, and good detail in close-range zoom images. It loses out on fine detail and sharpness in most conditions, which has been a limitation of Samsung’s phone cameras for a long time and is partly because of the company’s focus on keeping noise levels under control.

DxOMark yet to test some big Galaxy S10 camera features

DxOMark hasn’t tested some of the highlight features of the Galaxy S10, such as HDR10+ video recording for the rear camera and 4K video recording for the front camera, so it will be interesting to see if the scores improve further once the publication has subjected the Galaxy S10 to more rigorous tests. The early scores are impressive enough, though, and the scores should be similar for the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10 as well, as they feature the same primary rear and front cameras as the S10+.

[Poll] How do you feel about Galaxy S10’s lack of a notification LED?

The Samsung Galaxy S10 doesn’t have a notification LED, but that isn’t such a big deal… is it? Some would disagree. We want to know exactly how much of a deal-breaker it is, though, so we’ve put together a short poll (below) to gauge the market’s (and our readers’) response to the controversial omission.

Galaxy S10+ features that have excited me… and one that hasn’t

The Galaxy S10 is official, and we’ve been busy writing about the device along with other products that Samsung announced at Unpacked 2019, including the Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy S10 rumors and leaks were plentiful and they gave us a good idea of what to expect before Samsung took the stage, and here are the features that have me excited as I wait for the Galaxy S10+ to go on sale.

Galaxy S10+ features that have excited me

Ultra-wide camera

Well, if you are a regular SamMobile reader, you probably had an idea this would be on the top of my list. I’ve loved Samsung’s decision to focus on ultra-wide cameras in the budget and mid-range segment, and now a flagship from the company has an ultra-wide camera as well. That and the telephoto lens mean the Galaxy S10+ is ready for every scenario. And in addition to letting you shoot wider pictures, I like that the ultra-wide camera on the Galaxy S10 lineup is a 16-megapixel sensor, so we’ll get plenty of detail in those ultra-wide shots compared to the 5 or 8MP ultra-wide cameras on devices like the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy A7 (2018).

Dual Pixel autofocus on front camera

This is another camera feature that I’m happy to see on the Galaxy S10+ and in general. Samsung’s smart autofocus thing on the Galaxy S8 and other recent flagships has been a good workaround to a physical autofocus system, but it’s far from perfect. With Dual Pixel autofocus, the 10MP front camera on the Galaxy S10+ trio now has the same autofocus system as the rear cameras, so the selfie game should be considerably better. I think I’m growing a bit too old to be taking too many selfies these days, but hey, when I do take one, the S10 will be able to do it quickly without me worrying about the focus kicking in, especially indoors and in poor lighting conditions.

In-display fingerprint sensor

This one should be obvious. I’ve never liked Samsung’s rear-mounted fingerprint sensors. It was both the problematic location of the sensor back in 2017 and – though it got fixed with the Galaxy S9 – the fact that the fingerprint reader was still on the back, which means you have to lift the phone off the table to unlock it. With the Galaxy S10, it’s back at the front and inside the display, so it should be pretty similar to the physical home key fingerprint readers from before the Galaxy S8 came along. I am not at all disappointed that the iris sensor is gone, but no notification LED is going to be a problem as I’ve never been keen on Always On Display because of its effect on battery life.

4,100 mAh battery

This is perhaps the main reason I’d go for the Galaxy S10+ and not the Galaxy S10. Spoiler alert, though: the 4,100 mAh battery is probably going to be the same as the 4,000 mAh battery on the Note 9. Samsung has just adopted the way of Chinese OEMs and is now rating batteries for their typical capacity and not the rated capacity, which is the capacity that matters in real-life conditions. The rated capacity is going to be around 4,000 mAh on the S10+ and 3,000 mAh and 3,300 mAh on the Galaxy S10e and S10. Not that that’s a bad thing, as 4,000 mAh is plenty for a flagship phone, especially now that there’s more efficient silicon powering under the hood.

One Galaxy S10+ feature that I’m not keen on

That one feature would be the dual front camera. Or, more precisely, that God awful cutout for the front camera. I don’t think I would mind a single cutout like the S10e or S10’s, but that wider cutout on the S10+ is just too, well, wide. I still haven’t played with the phone in person so maybe I won’t mind it as much in practice, but I’m disappointed that to get that big battery, one also has to embrace that dual front camera as well.

The second front camera will be great for those who love taking bokeh selfies, but for everyone else, it will serve little purpose than to give you a bigger black hole to look at every time you use the phone. One can’t have everything, though, so I guess this is something I and many others who buy the Galaxy S10+ will have to live with.

What about you? What is your favorite Galaxy S10 model out of the three (or four, if you’re lucky enough to be in a market where the Galaxy S10 5G will be launched) and what are the features you’re looking forward to the most? Let’s discuss in the comments!

The Galaxy S10 only has 8GB of RAM, but comes in 128GB and 512GB storage options. The S10+ has 8GB and 12GB RAM variants combined with 512GB and 1TB ROM, respectively. Galaxy S10 5G will be headed to these countries over the summer

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S10 5G yesterday. This model of the new flagship offers more than just a 5G modem. It has four rear cameras, a larger display, bigger battery and faster charging. Samsung will only be offering the 5G variant in select markets.

That obviously makes sense. There would be no need to sell the Galaxy S10 5G in markets where no 5G networks are available. Carriers in key markets will be launching their commercial 5G networks in the coming months.

Galaxy S10 5G will be out in more countries over the summer

We already know that the United States and South Korea will be the first to get the 5G variant. Carriers in both countries have deployed their 5G networks and can soon begin selling compatible devices. Samsung has confirmed that Verizon will have initial exclusivity for the Galaxy S10 5G in the United States.

The company has also confirmed that the Galaxy S10 5G will be out in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom over the summer. It has teamed up major carriers in these markets. They include Deutsche Telekom, EE, Orange, Sunrise, Swisscom, TIM, Telefonica and Vodafone. Not all carriers will launch the variant at once while pricing and availability will vary as well.

We can expect Samsung to release the Galaxy S10 5G in more markets where 5G networks go live down the line. It will initially be focusing on the aforementioned countries, though, where it has already laid the groundwork with its carrier partners.

Samsung Galaxy Fold doesn’t have a headphone jack

The Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s elusive foldable smartphone that the company finally showed off to the world, doesn’t have a headphone jack. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Fold will change “the shape of tomorrow”, and that means giving up on some yesteryear features, such as non-folding displays and, well, a headphone jack. A microSD slot isn’t part of the device, either.

Samsung obviously didn’t say anything about this, only choosing to focus on the good stuff in its Galaxy Fold introduction. And barring a headphone jack, the Galaxy Fold does have the latest and greatest specs underneath that stunning folding exterior. It is powered by a Snapdragon 855 SoC, comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, six cameras, and even 5G support. Whether the 4,380 mAh battery will be enough to keep the Fold running all day long with plenty of usage in tablet mode remains to be seen.

The Galaxy Fold goes on sale April 26 at a starting price of $1,980. No one has had the chance to play with one yet, but we will hopefully be able to get our hands on the device for a review before Samsung puts it on retail shelves. Not that many who will actually be spending money on the Galaxy Fold will care too much about reviews – they’re probably just going to get it for bragging rights.
