Samsung’s third Showcase experience center opens in Vietnam

Samsung has opened the Samsung Showcase, an immersive technology experience center, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This is the third such Samsung centre in the world, following those in New York, USA, and Frankfurt, Germany.

The new announcement comes just days after Samsung opened an eight-story Galaxy store in Tokyo, Japan. It is Samsung’s largest Galaxy showcase store in the world.

Samsung Showcase comes to Vietnam

Samsung is bringing the full spectrum of its innovative technologies to Southeast Asia with the new Samsung Showcase in Vietnam. Spread across 1,010 sq.m, the two-story centre in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City comprises of four zones. Each zone offers visitors the opportunity to discover the latest groundbreaking technologies and products by Samsung. From mobile devices and home appliances, to virtual reality entertainment, Samsung Showcase offers a “real-life demonstration of how Samsung’s products can enhance everyday life for consumers.”

Kyung Wook Suh, President of Samsung Vina Electronics, is hoping this experience centre to become the new technological destination for millennials in the city. “Samsung Showcase fully encompasses passion points such as art, entertainment, sports, health and cuisine, and they are brought to life by the latest and most advanced technology products and services we can offer. We seek to inspire and awaken the creative potentials of millennials to defy all limits,” he said.

Vietnam is an important market for Samsung. A considerable number of the company’s smartphones, flagships included, are also manufactured in the country. So it certainly makes sense for the company to invest considerable resources in setting up such an experience center in Vietnam.

Galaxy M20 online sales begin in Malaysia on March 20

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M20 on January 28th. It leads the company’s new effort to compete in the highly competitive budget smartphone segment. It’s a pretty solid smartphone which has been aggressively priced for good measure. Samsung is also focusing on selling it primarily online to keep costs down.

Having made its way through India and Indonesia and the Philippines, the Galaxy M20 has been launched in Malaysia today. Samsung will be selling the device online in the country starting March 20.

The Galaxy M20 is the first smartphone from the new Galaxy M series to launch in Malaysia. It’s also the first online-exclusive model from the company. Samsung will be selling it through Shopee and its own online store.

We were pretty impressed by this device. Our Galaxy M20 review concluded that this device is a masterstroke from Samsung, largely because of its blend of functionality and aggressive pricing. The company seems to have picked up a few tricks from its Chinese rivals who have threatened its position in this segment of the market with similar strategies.

The Galaxy M20 features a 6.3-inch LCD display, an Exynos 7904 processor with 3/4GB RAM and 32/64GB configurations. There’s a dual camera setup at the back with a 13-megapixel primary and a 5-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. The display notch has an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Samsung put the biggest battery on a budget Galaxy smartphone yet on this device, a 5,000mAh battery to be precise. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

Samsung has exclusively teamed up with Shopee Malaysia to sell the Galaxy M20 in the country. Customers will also be able to purchase it from the company’s own online store. It will be available in Charcoal Black and Ocean Blue colors for RM799 ($195) starting March 20. Samsung is offering a free Logitech X50 mobile wireless speaker to customers who purchase this device from its online store. Shopee customers will get the same speaker in addition to a JBL headset so it’s clearly the better choice in terms of value for money.

Galaxy S9 March update brings a Galaxy S10 selfie feature

Samsung has released a new software update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, and it brings a new selfie feature that was introduced on the Galaxy S10 lineup. As Samsung notes in the changelog, once the update is installed, the Galaxy S9 will take selfies with a narrower field of view (FOV). The front camera’s rated FOV is 80 degrees, but the update makes the device take selfies with a 68-degree FOV by default and adds a button to switch between 68-degree FOV and 80-degree FOV.

Narrow selfies for your lonesome, wider ones for group shots

This might seem like an odd move, but it actually makes sense. Samsung’s flagship phones have always had a wider field of view than phones from other manufacturers, and while that has always been an advantage with group selfies, it can be overkill if you’re just taking selfies of yourself. So now, by default, the front camera will take photos with a narrower FOV, but you can switch to the full 80-degree FOV if you want to accommodate more people (or more of the background against which you’re taking a selfie).

Samsung was quite active last year in bringing new camera features from the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 to older flagships as well as more affordable Galaxies, and we can expect the same to happen with some of the camera features introduced on the Galaxy S10. The company will likely release a similar update for the Galaxy Note 9, but it remains to be seen just how soon that will happen.

Other camera improvements also included

The new Galaxy S9 and S9+ update is currently available in Germany and comes with software version G960FXXU2CSC8 and G965FXXU2CSC8 respectively. The update also adds other camera improvements, such as faster switching between camera modes. It also brings improved stability for Wi-Fi and Samsung’s Messages, Contacts and Video Editor apps. The March 2019 security patch is included as well.

You can check if the update is available for you by going into the Software update menu of the Settings app on your phone and tapping Download updates manually. Samsung doesn’t seem to be rolling out the update over Smart Switch yet, but once that happens, you should also be able to find the firmware for the new software in our firmware database for a manual upgrade.

Samsung teases possible Galaxy A90 launch for April 10

Samsung has just put up a teaser online to announce that it’s going to be unveiling a new device on April 10, 2019. The company says that it will host “A Galaxy Event” on the aforementioned date. The teaser itself doesn’t reveal much about the device it’s going to unveil. However, there are a couple of devices in the pipeline, such as the Galaxy A90. It’s possible that this might be the device Samsung shows off on April 10.

Galaxy A90 launch likely on April 10

This doesn’t seem like a conventional press event. Samsung will most likely do an online reveal which we have seen it do for Galaxy A series devices in the past. It has already revealed some of the handsets in this year’s Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A10, A30 and A50 were unveiled just last month.

There have been quite a few reports about the Galaxy A90 recently. It’s unclear as yet what hardware this device will be touting under the hood. Given that it’s higher up the order than the Galaxy A50 you can expect it to feature decent specs. It may also get the optical in-display fingerprint sensor that the Galaxy A50 has.

It’s believed that the Galaxy A90 will have a no-notch display with a sliding, rotating mechanism for the camera. This would mean that the device won’t have separate cameras for the front and back. Just one camera system with an expected 48-megapixel sensor would be enough for both. Samsung may also pitch the Galaxy A90 as a gaming device. A promotional page for the device was spotted on Samsung’s US website which listed it under “Ultimate Gaming Devices.”

Contrary to earlier rumors, it does appear that Samsung will be releasing the Galaxy A90 globally and not just in China. We have already confirmed exclusively that the Galaxy A90 will be available in silver, black and gold colors. It will also have 128GB of storage and 6/8GB RAM variants.

The teaser may be hinting at three devices instead of one but that’s just speculation right now. Samsung does have other Galaxy A devices on the way so it’s possible we may get more than the Galaxy A90 on April 10.

Galaxy S10 owners report issues with Android Auto — here’s what we know

A number of Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ owners have taken to Samsung’s US Community Forum to vent their frustration that their handset won’t work with their vehicle’s Android Auto in-car infotainment system, throwing all sorts of strange error messages before crashing in most instances.

The bug doesn’t seem to follow a specific pattern — some users explained how Android Auto won’t recognise their handset, falling at the first hurdle; while others said it starts to function like normal, detecting their device, only to crash a couple of minutes later or when a command is issued.

There doesn’t appear to be a workaround for the bug, either. Reinstalling Android Auto on the handset has next to no effect, nor does a factory reset, according to users on the US Community Forum, hinting that Android Auto isn’t compatible with some builds of the device’s firmware.

There’s nothing to say that Samsung is aware of the glitch. It hasn’t responded to any of the comments on its Community Forum or made an announcement on any of its usual media channels. We have, however, reached out to the firm to inform it of the issue.

This isn’t the first bug that Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ owners have reported. Some customers are experiencing an issue that results in Tap to wake activating when the device is in a bag or a pocket, leading to consistent battery drain as the unit’s screen is on almost all of the time.

Galaxy S10 has a bug that’s irritating owners all over the world

No smartphone launch would be complete without some initial teething issues, and in the case of the Galaxy S10 that’s a rather frustrating bug that results in Tap to Wake activating when it’s not supposed to, like when the handset is in a bag or a pocket — but it seems to be isolated to the US.

“I have an S10, and I keep my phone in my pocket with the screen towards my leg (since my leg is far less likely to damage the screen),” writes one Galaxy S10 owner on Reddit. “The only issue with this is that I started feeling the “fingerprint rejected” vibrations while the phone was in my pocket.”

“First thing I did was activate tap to wake, I have never seen this in a Samsung phone before. Now I have the newest that Samsung has to offer and it does not work properly,” explains another on Samsung’s US Community forums. “My leg through my fabric taps the phone and opens it up.”

The issue results in consistent battery drain as the screen is waking up more than it should be. In some instances, Tape to Wake is also triggering the camera, which uses up even more juice as a host of sensors are subsequently activated as the handset thinks it’s operating in low-light conditions.

Samsung’s advice? Disable Tap to Wake and the Always-On Display. But that’s far from good enough — when you’re shelling out around $1000 for a product, it should work as intended. You shouldn’t have to disable a feature, or two, to help it last an entire day on a single charge.

To be clear, though: the issue isn’t affecting everyone. Almost all the reports we’ve uncovered were from customers in the US with either a Galaxy S10 or Galaxy S10+, indicating that the bug is an issue with the region’s firmware. If that’s the case, Samsung should be able to fix it by a software update.

Samsung to launch second Pyeongtaek memory plant in March 2020

Samsung will launch a second memory plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea in March 2020, it has been revealed, in a bid to consolidate its spot as the leading manufacturer in a market that’s been on the decline. That hasn’t stopped the firm from doubling down, however, as it’s sunk more than $26.4 billion into the development of the new facility in anticipation of demand picking back up.

It’s tough to comprehend the sheer size of the operation Samsung has in mind. The lot of land it acquired for the venture, for example, measures in at 2.89 million square meters — around the size of 400 American football pitches. Right now, that’s home to one manufacturing warehouse, but Samsung is looking to build another two in the future; though no plans have been announced.

“Although prices of DRAM and NAND flash chips experienced fall in the first quarter, Samsung didn’t scale down its investment plans,” an industry official told The Korea Herald on March 17. “Senior company officials are predicting the demand will pick up in the second half of this year and continue to rise rapidly next year.”

As I mentioned earlier, the future of the memory market is uncertain. Prices for DRAM and NAND modules fell in Q1 of 2019 on the back of a lack of demand. Some experts believe that will rocket in H2 of 2019 as manufacturers start to upscale production of their second wave of flagship smartphones, as well as more unique supplementary offerings, such as those with foldable screens.

Samsung is looking to put itself in the position where it doesn’t have to turn down orders when they start arriving in H2 of 2019 for H1 of 2020; it will have the manufacturing equipment to keep up, thus helping it retain its title as the leading memory manufacturer, while also putting some head-space between itself and the competition, as it looks to regulate supply and demand.
