Galaxy Note FE Android Pie update has been released

There’s good news for you if you have been waiting for the Galaxy Note FE Android Pie update. Samsung has started rolling out Android 9.0 for this handset. The company released this device quite a while after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle which seriously dented the reputation of this stellar series.

The Galaxy Note FE or Fan Edition was meant for Samsung fans who really loved the Galaxy Note 7 but couldn’t hold on to it due to the mandatory recall. It was genuinely a good phone, the Galaxy Note 7, and would have done well had it not been for the battery problems.

Galaxy Note FE Android Pie update

Samsung first released the Galaxy Note FE in South Korea on July 7, 2017. The company utilized leftover parts from the Galaxy Note 7 and unopened units of the original device to put together the Galaxy Note FE. The original battery was swapped out for a smaller and safe 3,200mAh battery.

To ensure customers that it won’t have the same issues as the original device, Samsung put the Galaxy Note FE’s battery through its new 8-point battery safety test. It later released the device in select markets across the globe.

The Galaxy Note FE Android Pie update is now rolling out, it’s firmware version N935FXXU4CSC4. We have received reports of the roll out from Saudi Arabia. It’s only a matter of time before the update goes live elsewhere as well. This release brings all of the Android Pie features for the handset in addition to Samsung’s One UI. The latest March 2019 security patch is included as well.

Galaxy A60 and Galaxy A70 images surface, launch imminent

Samsung has a whole host of Galaxy A devices to launch this year. It has already unveiled the Galaxy A10, A30 and the A50 last month. The Galaxy A20 was quietly launched in Russia just last week as well. There are a few other handsets in the pipeline and at least two of them are due to arrive soon.

Images of the Galaxy A60 and Galaxy A70 have now surfaced online courtesy of the TENAA database. That’s China’s equivalent of the FCC. Before they can be sold in the country, the handsets need to be approved by the regulatory body. The approval process yields such images even before the devices are officially unveiled.

The Galaxy A60, bearing model number SM-A6060 in China, is expected to feature the Snapdragon 675 processor. It may arrive with 6/8GB RAM + 128GB storage configurations. The 6.3-inch Infinity-O display adds a cutout instead of a notch for the front camera like the other handsets in this series. There’s also a fingerprint sensor at the back alongside the triple-camera which may have a 32-megapixel primary sensor. We have already revealed that it will have a 3,410mAh battery.

We first reported about the development of the Galaxy A70 some eight months ago. It appears that the device is now ready to hit the market. It, SM-A7050, is expected to feature a 6.7-inch Infinity-U display which is Samsung’s branding for a waterdrop-style notch. The Galaxy A70 will get an in-display fingerprint sensor, a triple camera at the back and a 4,400mAh battery.

The TENAA certifications are a good indication of the impending launch of these devices. They stick with the script for Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy A series and will likely be affordably priced. Samsung has an event scheduled for April 10 to unveil new Galaxy A devices. Perhaps it will launch the Galaxy A60 and Galaxy A70 at the event alongside the highly anticipated Galaxy A90.

Pre-order Galaxy Fold starting April 26, releases May 3 across Europe

Samsung has finally revealed when customers in Europe will be able to pre-order Galaxy Fold. The company had confirmed on February 20 that the handset would be out in the United States on April 26. That’s when it will begin taking pre-orders for the handset in Europe.

In a press release sent out today, Samsung has confirmed that customers can pre-order the Galaxy Fold on Samsung.com and partner websites from Friday, April 26. The handset will hit retail stores in 15 European countries on May 3rd.

Pre-order Galaxy Fold in Europe starting April 26

Samsung’s carrier partners across Europe will be offering the handset to customers. However, the retail experience is going to be carefully controlled by Samsung, so you may not find demo units in all stores. At launch, the Galaxy Fold is going to be released in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania and Switzerland.

Customers who want to purchase Samsung’s first foldable smartphone will have to pay 2,000 euro for the privilege. The price tag doesn’t seem too high when you look at what you’re getting with this device. All customers will receive a pair of the new wireless Galaxy Buds, a slim-design protective Kevlar case and one-year damage cover through Samsung Care+.

The Galaxy Fold will be available in Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue colors. Customers across Europe will thus be among the first who get to buy this unique smartphone. The US and South Korea are going to be the only markets that get it before Europe. Samsung has said that it will release the Galaxy Fold globally, including in markets like India.

Galaxy A90 will have a 6.7-inch screen — and there won’t be a notch in sight

Samsung has made some serious progress on eliminating the intrusive screen cut-out that’s become synonymous with modern smartphones, it seems. Information obtained by notorious industry whistleblower Steve Hemmerstofferr, the forthcoming Galaxy A90 is Samsung’s first handset to feature an Infinity Display that’s all screen — there isn’t a notch, or anything of the sort, in sight.

To circumvent the trouble it’s having baking the camera into the screen, Samsung introduced a pop-up mechanism on the Galaxy A90, according to recent reports. It’s said to work in a similar way to that of the Vivo Nex, emerging when it’s required for authentication or to take a snap. Samsung has taken it one step further, though: the module can be twisted to flip the camera to the back.

You’d think with all those extra sensors, there’d be a large amount of dead space surrounding the mammoth 6.73-inch screen — but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The pop-up camera module is mounted atop the handset, so there’s nothing interjecting the screen; there’s just a 1.2mm bezel running around the top and both sides, and a marginally larger 3.6mm chin at the bottom.

An image of a screen protector for the handset surfaced on March 24, seemingly corroborating the above. What’s interesting, however, is the omission of a cut-out for an earpiece speaker in the space above the screen, hinting that Samsung opted for some sort of Crystal Sound-like solution, which sends sound waves through the screen; eliminating the need for a front-facing speaker.

Then again, the resolution of the image isn’t the best we’ve seen — as is always the case with leaks — so it’s hard to discern whether it’s there or not. If it’s missing, there could be a more simple explanation: sometimes manufacturers create preliminary versions of their accessories to check they’re the right shape and size before they start focusing on the minor details.

It’s rumored to launch on April 10

The Galaxy A90 is tipped to launch at the start of April. It’s believed to feature an all-new, unannounced Snapdragon 700-series CPU, known as the Snapdragon 7150, a minimum of 6GB of RAM and a 3700mAh cell, complete with 25W Adaptive Fast Charging, and Android 9.0 Pie. And with those internals, it’s no surprise that it’s tipped to sit beneath the Galaxy S10e in the firm’s range.

Galaxy S10+ will be used to film an entire episode of Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show

The Samsung Galaxy S10+ will be used to film an entire episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which is scheduled to air on March 25. And, aside from being shot on Samsung’s latest consumer handset, The Tonight Show has another treat in store: Fallon will be joined by no other than MMA legend Conor McGregor — and there’s a subtle hint the duo will be headed to an Irish pub.

Anyway, back to the task at hand. This isn’t the first time a smartphone has been used to film something on a professional level; Steven Soderbergh shot his Netflix movie High Flying Bird on an iPhone, and rival late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel recently used a Google Pixel 3 to film Eminem’s performance atop the Empire State Building. It’s a fantastic way to showcase their camera prowess.

Sadly, there aren’t a whole load of international broadcasters — it isn’t aired in the UK, for example — so those wanting to see the Galaxy S10+ in action, who don’t reside in the US or a neighbouring region where The Tonight Show is broadcast, will need to head over to the show’s YouTube Channel for the highlights on March 26.

Galaxy Fold won’t come with an Exynos CPU in Asia or Europe

A benchmark surfaced last week confirming that, like the North American model, the International variant of the Galaxy Fold wouldn’t bundle a Samsung-made Exynos CPU, and now we have even more evidence supporting that claim in the form of a reference to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 — the CPU on the North American version of the Galaxy S10 — in the handset’s firmware.

The folks at XDA-Developers conducted a thorough analysis of the combination firmware for the International model of the Galaxy Fold (SM-F900F) and uncovered a reference to SM8150 — the internal model name for the Snapdragon 855. Intrigued by the discovery, they then attempted to track down a slither of code pertaining to the Exynos 9820 but were unable to do so.

This claim is further corroborated by a revelation we made back in January, when we learned that the Galaxy Fold will be available in two core models: one with LTE and one with 5G. To be clear, though, the information we received states that the 5G model will hit the shelves in South Korea — there’s no word on whether it will launch elsewhere, like the United Kingdom and the United States.

It’s slower than the Galaxy S10+ on paper

In a recent benchmark test, the Galaxy Fold racked up a score of 3418 in the single- and 9703 in the multi-core test. The Snapdragon model of the Galaxy S10+, for comparison, came in with 4258 in the single- and 10,099 in the multi-core, meaning it’s a lot faster than the Fold — on paper, at least. But that could be because Samsung’s first foldable was running unoptimized pre-release firmware.

Galaxy S10 has a dedicated Instagram Mode, but it could be better

I’m an avid Instagram user, so when I first heard that the Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e would all feature a dedicated Instagram Mode that will enable users to create Instagram Stories right from the handset’s stock Camera client, I was over the mood. Then, it was revealed that it would also deliver the highest resolution uploads on the market, I was even more ecstatic.

But when my Galaxy S10+ arrived, all the excitement (for that specific feature) went out the window, replaced with sheer disappointment. I was expecting a lot more than the low-resolution Stories that Instagram Mode yields — and it seems I’m not alone. They’re on par with what I was sharing using my Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9+, and still worse than that of the Apple iPhone XS, for comparison.

Don’t get me wrong, having the choice to upload to Instagram Stories from right within the stock Camera client is fantastic, as is having the option to edit them — decorating them with GIFs of Donald Trump and Oprah Winfrey, in my case — without having to open up the application. But the resolution of the images just isn’t up to scratch, and that’s stopping me from using it day in, day out.

Come on, Samsung — sort it out!

Whenever I want to share a snap of my food, I still take to Instagram to share it to Instagram Stories. If Samsung rolled out to fix the resolution of Instagram Mode, though, I wouldn’t have to — and I’m sure there are plenty of customers out there who feel the same. Rest assured, though: I’m doing all I can to make sure the firm’s aware of the issue; I reached out informing it on March 19.
