Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 getting Android Pie update in India

Samsung has released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 in India today. The company had announced that its Galaxy M series phones would be getting the Pie update on June 3 but pushed the update out to the Galaxy M30 a week early, and now the M10 and M20 are also receiving the update ahead of schedule. The update for the M10 and M20 comes with the May security patch and is a 926 MB download on the former and a 1883 MB download on the latter.

Android Pie rollout for Galaxy M lineup now complete

Oddly enough, the Galaxy M20 Pie update is considerably bigger than the Galaxy M10 and M30’s – the M30’s update was a 1144 MB download over the air, only slightly bigger than the M10’s. The changelog is the same across the three devices, however, with the exception of the Galaxy M10 not getting the Scene Optimizer feature in the camera. You can get a detailed look at many of the new features, most of which have come to the Galaxy M trio, of Samsung’s version of Android Pie in our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series of articles.

To download the Android Pie update on your M10 or M20, open the phone’s Settings app, navigate to Software update, then tap Download updates manually. These are big updates, so a Wi-Fi network or a mobile data plan with plenty of bandwidth is recommended to download them. You’ll also need to keep your phone charged to at least 20 percent to be able to start installing the update.

Cheaper Galaxy Note 10 may have a 3,400mAh battery

There’s going to be a Cheaper Galaxy Note 10 variant this year. Samsung will launch two different models of its upcoming flagship, as we have already confirmed exclusively. Some new information has surfaced today which suggests that the cheaper variant may have a 3,400mAh battery.

This may be slightly concerning for those eyeing what would effectively be the “Galaxy Note 10e” even if it’s not named as such. The battery capacity of this handset would be lower than that of the Galaxy Note 9 (4,000mAh).

Battery capacity of the Cheaper Galaxy Note 10 likely revealed

As we have already reported, the SM-N970 and SM-N975 will be the two main Galaxy Note 10 models with 6.28-inch and 6.75-inch displays respectively. Each model will also have its own 5G variant. An earlier report had revealed that the SM-N975, the larger of the two models, will feature a 4,500mAh battery.

The part number for the cheaper Galaxy Note 10 battery has been discovered by GalaxyClub. It (EB-BN970ABU) corresponds to the handset’s model number. This battery has a 3,400mAh capacity which is lower than what we have seen on recent Galaxy Note flagships. It’s slightly higher than the Galaxy S10e’s 3,000mAh capacity.

This would suggest that Samsung will try to replicate the Galaxy S10e’s success for its phablet lineup as well. The cheapest Galaxy S10 model has been very well received. It got a glowing review from us as well. This model may thus cater to customers who want the Note experience without burning a hole in their pocket.

There may also be other differences between the two Galaxy Note 10 models. The former is likely to feature a triple camera system and a single front camera. The latter is expected to have a quad camera at the back and dual camera system on the front. However, both could have a fast charge speed of more than 25W. A recent report also suggested a battery capacity of 4,300mAh for the 5G variant of the cheaper Galaxy Note 10 model.

Android Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy S8 Active may not be too far

Samsung has already released the Android Pie update for many of its devices, but such is the breadth and depth of its lineup that many models are yet to receive the update. While the waiting list mostly contains older budget and midrange devices, it also includes the Galaxy S8 Active and Tab S3 – both of which were flagships during their time.

It appears Samsung is gearing up to release the Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy S8 Active soon. Multiple variants of these two devices have received Wi-Fi certification with Android Pie onboard, indicating the release may not be too far. US Carrier variants of the Galaxy S8 Active, SM-G892U and SM-G892A, and multiple Tab S3 variants – SM-T820, SM-T825, SM-T825C, SM-T825X, SM-T825Y, and SM-T827 – have received the certification yesterday. Post Wi-Fi certification, it usually takes a month for the update to hit the market, although it may vary in some cases.

To recap, the Galaxy S8 Active is a rugged variant of the 2018 flagship and is sold in a handful of markets. While the Galaxy S8/S8+ started receiving the Pie update in February itself, the Active variant has been in waiting.  On the tablet side of things, Samsung kickstarted the Android Pie rollout with the Galaxy Tab S4 last month, making way for the Galaxy Tab S3.

The Android Pie is a major update and brings many changes and improvements to the table. Samsung files ‘Dex Live’ trademark, hinting at possible Galaxy Note 10 feature

A European trademark application reveals the wireless iteration of Samsung’s DeX software might come soon. We would not be surprised to see ‘DeX Live’ makes its debut on the Galaxy Note 10, coming August.

Back in October of last year, rumors surfaced about a next-generation DeX that can make wireless connections. Such functionality did not make its way to the Galaxy S10 earlier this year, but new information suggests it might finally be around the corner.

Today, the guys over at GalaxyClub spotted an application filed by Samsung in the European Union for the trademark ‘Dex Live’. As per usual, technical details are not revealed by trademark paperwork, but an interesting description is included nonetheless. In the paperwork, the first description of ‘Dex Live’ reads ‘application software, namely, for projecting the screen of mobile device to displays via computer peripheral devices and wireless networks‘. DeX Live being that previously rumored wireless DeX functionality certainly seems to be a possibility, though we have to wait for the actual feature to be revealed before we know for certain what is cooking in Samsung’s kitchen.

What remains is the question when or where DeX Live will make its debut. In recent years, important upgrades to Samsung DeX have always been launched with new Galaxy S or Note devices. Just last year, the Galaxy Note 9 brought us DeX without the need for a dock or pad, making the Galaxy Note 10 a likely candidate for further upgrades to the DeX experience.

Still, we won’t know for sure until August, when the next-gen Note launches. Until then, an increasing number of leaks will undoubtedly detail much of the Galaxy Note 10, so perhaps we will not have wait that long for more information to appear.

Galaxy Note 10 camera setup may look like this

The rumor mill appears to be convinced that the Galaxy Note 10 camera setup will look similar to the iPhone, in that it will be positioned vertically. That’s certainly going to be a new look for the Note lineup. The existing device, the Galaxy Note 9, has a prominently positioned horizontal camera setup at the back.

A crude sketch making the rounds on Weibo suggests what the camera placement might be like on the Galaxy Note 10. It lines up with earlier reports about a vertical camera setup for Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.

Galaxy Note 10 camera setup could be offset to one side

We have already reported exclusively that Samsung will offer two models of the Galaxy Note 10. They are expected to feature 6.28-inch and 6.75-inch displays with triple and quad camera systems respectively. There will also be 5G variants of each model.

This sketch probably represents the quad camera system which would include a Time-of-Flight camera like the Galaxy S10 5G in addition to the standard, wide, and telephoto lenses. The Galaxy Note 10 could feature Samsung’s new 5x telephoto sensor. There’s no way to definitively say that this is what the setup would look like on the Galaxy Note 10. There’s nothing in the sketch to suggest that it’s for a Samsung smartphone. It’s only the Chinese rumor mill which seems convinced that it’s for the Galaxy Note 10.

If anything, it suggests that the device’s vertical camera will be offset instead of being in the center. The latter may not be possible as it will take up precious space that would otherwise accommodate the 4,500mAh battery. It also raises the possibility that the heart rate sensor could get the ax.

Make what you will of it. We’re bound to hear more conflicting views about the Galaxy Note 10 in the weeks to come. Samsung isn’t due to launch its next flagship smartphone for a couple of months at the very least.

Samsung confirms June 11 launch for the Galaxy M40 in India

Samsung India has officially confirmed the June 11 launch date for the Galaxy M40. The date was tipped by YouTuber Gaurav Chaudhary of Technical Guruji in an exclusive first-look video of the device earlier this week. The Galaxy M40 will be the fourth member of Samsung’s highly successful Galaxy M series. And just like the previous three models, it will be an online-exclusive device available via Amazon India and the Samsung eStore starting 6 PM IST on June 11.

Infinity-O display, Snapdragon 675, and more

Samsung India has just published a microsite teasing the upcoming Galaxy M40. The company has shared some images of the device, highlighting its Infinity-O display, triple rear camera setup, and the Snapdragon 6 series processor. While the company didn’t go into details about the processor, the Galaxy M40’s Geekbench benchmark has already revealed that the phone will come with the Snapdragon 675 SoC, 6GB RAM, and Android 9 Pie. And as we had exclusively revealed, there should be 128GB of internal storage.

The triple rear camera setup is placed vertically, with the sensor at the center getting a circular ring around it. There’s an LED flash just below the three cameras. The images on Samsung’s Galaxy M40 teaser microsite also confirm the presence of a capacitive fingerprint sensor on the phone. From the looks of it, the Galaxy M40 will be identical to the Galaxy A8s in appearance.

Samsung is yet to officially say anything about the pricing of the Galaxy M40. However, rumors suggest that the device will be priced at somewhere around ₹20,000 (~$290). We will have to wait and see if more details surface in the coming days ahead of the official launch.
