Samsung launches the Galaxy Wide 4 and Galaxy Jean 2 in South Korea

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Wide 4 and Galaxy Jean 2 smartphones in South Korea. The devices are re-branded Galaxy A20 and A20e, both of which have already released in several markets around the world. The Galaxy Jean 2, aka Galaxy A20e, is priced at 253,000 won (~$214) in Samsung’s home country. Samsung is yet to reveal the price of the Galaxy Wide 4 in its domestic market.

Available exclusively through KT

The Galaxy Jean 2, carrying the model number SM-A202K, features the same set of specs as the Galaxy A20e. It gets a 5.8-inch Infinity-V TFT screen, and is powered by the Exynos 7884 SoC. The handset gets 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space, expandable up to 512GB via microSD cards. It comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box, with Samsung’s One UI on top.

There’s a dual rear camera setup with a 13MP (f1.9) primary sensor and a 5MP (f2.2) ultra-wide camera. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the back. The device houses a 3,000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging. Samsung is offering the device in black and white colors in South Korea. It is sold exclusively by KT through its online and offline channels.

As for the Galaxy Wide 4, it sports a bigger 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-V display, and packs a bigger 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging. Rest of the specs are pretty much the same, a dual rear camera setup, an Exynos 7884 SoC, 3GB RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The device is expected to cost around 300,000 won (~$254) in South Korea.

Could this be the Galaxy Note 10’s crazy fast 45W charger?

Recently, rumors about Samsung bringing a massive upgrade to its fast charging game have been swirling around. The Galaxy Note 10 is said to support 45W fast charging. Now we might just be able to put a picture to the rumors, with the appearance of a brand new fast charger.

Samsung EP-TA845 fast charger

Back in South Korea, a previously unknown travel adapter received some necessary safety certifications carrying product number EP-TA845. The picture, spotted by GalaxyClub, shows us a rather thick charger with the fast charging logo on its side. Unfortunately, the side that has all the technical details printed on it is facing the table, leaving us short on actual information.

Still, it is good to keep in mind that earlier this year, Samsung launched the Galaxy A70 and A80 with 25 Watt fast charging. Those devices use the EP-TA800 charger as their power supply, leaving us hopeful the EP-TA845 might be that adapter’s bigger, even chubbier, brother.

Of course, the levels of uncertainty here are substantial, so be sure to keep a grain of salt at hand. We do, however, have little doubt more information about the EP-TA845 will surface soon, now that its existence is no longer hidden from public scrutiny. And when that happens, we will surely learn more about its actual capacity, and if it will indeed accompany any of the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 variants.

With more than two months to go until Samsung reveals the Galaxy Note 10 lineup, the clues certainly are getting more interesting and plentiful. Samsung is expected to launch the phone or phones sometime in August, with the actual release happening later that month or in early September.

Samsung kickstarts 6G network research with an eye on the future

The much-hyped 5G networks are finally going live in select parts of the world, but it’s still a long way before the technology matures and becomes commonplace. Samsung is aiming to become a dominant player in the 5G space and has been working aggressively with industry partners to get a head start.

Even before the fight for 5G dominance goes mainstream, the Korean company is already thinking about 6G networks with an eye on the future. According to reports, it has upgraded a research team working on next-generation telecommunication networks in Samsung Research, the company’s R&D hub, to a research center to fast-track development and standardization of 6G.

“The current team on telecommunications technology standards has been expanded to start leading research on the 6G network,” said a Samsung official according to one of the reports.

While this may seem too early, it’s not uncommon for major companies to invest in research of products and services that are years, if not decades, away from hitting the market.  As uncertainty looms over some of Samsung’s existing businesses, the company has been actively looking for new growth engines to secure its future.

Samsung’s early investment in 6G seems like a good bet as Huawei’s growing troubles outside China offer the company an opportunity to play a bigger role in the global telecommunications market. Whether the Korean tech giant will be able to capitalize on the opportunity will be known in a few years from now.

Samsung teams up with Hatch for 5G game streaming in the US

Samsung has announced a new partnership with the 5G game streaming service Hatch. The company has launched the Hatch for Samsung app for the Galaxy S10 5G. The app is available in the Game Launcher, and comes with  one month’s worth of Hatch Premium for free. It enables the owners of Samsung’s first 5G phone to play popular games like Hitman GO, Monument Valley, and Angry Birds instantly over streaming. The promotion, however, is currently available to the Galaxy S10 5G owners in the United States only.

Over 100 mobile games on demand

Faster speed and lower latency are two big features being touted about with 5G networks. These features could take video game streaming on mobile devices to the next level, and Samsung feels it’s the right time to team up with Hatch. Specially designed for 5G networks, Hatch brings immediate responsiveness in video game streaming on mobile devices, Samsung says.

With Hatch Premium membership, owners of the Galaxy S10 5G get access to over 100 mobile games on their smartphone. The continuously growing collection includes high quality games from several premium developers. Galaxy Home to be launched in Q3 2019, says Samsung CEO

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Home alongside the Galaxy Note 9 last year. It has been a long wait for this Bixby-powered smart speaker. In February this year, Samsung announced that the Galaxy Home would be coming in April. That window has already passed, and there’s still no product in sight. Now a new report coming from South Korea claims that the Galaxy Home will finally be taking the center stage in the third quarter of this year.

Galaxy Home launch due in Q3 2019

Samsung hasn’t discontinued the Galaxy Home. The company is putting the finishing touches to it, or in other words, working on to improve Bixby’s capabilities. However, it now seems to be almost done. Kim Hyun-suk, CEO of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Division, has confirmed that the company will launch the device in the third quarter of this year.

“The Galaxy Home speaker, which will be the center of Samsung’s home appliances, is planned to be launched in mid-second half of the year,” Kim told The Korea Herald. That “mid-second half of the year” was later transcribed as the third quarter by another Samsung executive.

“The AI speaker will help achieve completion of Samsung’s IoT initiative,” Kim added. However, he declined to respond when inquired about the launch of Galaxy Home Mini. The smaller version of Samsung’s smart speaker recently passed through FCC. May be we’ll see both speakers being released together in the coming months.

Samsung monthly updates: June 2019 security patch gets detailed

Samsung monthly updates are usually detailed in the first week and that’s precisely what the company has done today. It has confirmed the details of the June 2019 security patch. We sometimes see a firmware update roll out with the new patch even before it’s detailed. The Galaxy A30 update that was rolled out yesterday did indeed come with the June 2019 security patch.

The latest security maintenance release brings several bug fixes for Android OS from Google. It also applies fixes for multiple vulnerabilities that were discovered in Samsung’s custom software. You can expect firmware updates with this patch to start rolling out in the coming days.

Samsung monthly updates will start sending out the June 2019 patch

The June 2019 security patch brings fixes for eight critical vulnerabilities in Android OS in addition to over a dozen high-risk vulnerabilities. One vulnerability flagged as moderate-risk has been patched as well. The most severe critical security vulnerability could have allowed a remote attacker to use a special file to run arbitrary code on a device in the context of a privileged process. Google has had no reports of active customer exploitation of these issues.

11 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items have been patched with the June 2019 release as well. They include the use of insecure HTTP link in the Galaxy Store. Select apps in the store used HTTP to check update availability which may have allowed remote attackers to launch a Man-in-the-Middle attack to download infected apps. This patch changes the app update checking URL to HTTPS.

Many of the company’s recent devices will soon receive the latest release as part of the Samsung monthly updates program. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as the firmware updates start rolling out.
