Samsung completes work on massive LED display at One Times Square

Samsung Electronics America subsidiary PRISMVIEW recently completed the installation of a gigantic five-screen LED display at the One Times Square building located in New York City. The display assembly, capable of full-motion video and live-streaming, will be used primarily for advertisements in this key high-traffic location. This could mean that Samsung’s very own Galaxy Note 10 might be showcased on the big screens ahead of the phone’s August unveiling that will reportedly take place in the same city.

The LED assembly leverages on Samsung’s XPS 160 and XPS 080 SMART LED Signage technology promising an energy-saving design and advanced color calibration. With an area of over 1,081 square meters, the five-screen setup took three months to be installed and the entire process can be seen in a two-minute time-lapse video shared by Samsung on YouTube.

“New York’s Times Square is not only a high-traffic location, it is a symbolic center of culture and commerce, making it the ideal place to showcase our leading technology on such a colossal scale” said Samsung Electronics’ EVP of Visual Display Business, Seog-gi Kim.

Samsung has historically showcased some of its Galaxy S and Note flagships on the Times Square digital billboards ahead of their release. This could very well be the case with the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 phablets, both of which are likely to feature OLED panels with a larger-than 6.4-inch footprint.

Samsung would kill two birds with one stone by advertising both its LED Signage business and the upcoming mobile devices simultaneously. This LED-ception would be quite reflective of Samsung’s usual business approach to being self-sufficient, even though the massive LED billboard was constructed on behalf of Jamestown, the real estate company managing the 25-story One Times Square building.

Galaxy Note 10 may feature Sound on Display instead of an earpiece

Much has been speculated about the Galaxy Note 10’s display based on protective film leaks out of China over the past few weeks. It’s now being claimed that the Galaxy Note 10 may feature Sound on Display technology instead of a traditional earpiece. The claim is based on one such leaked film which shows slim bezels all around.

The top bezel above the centered camera hole appears to be quite slim. It may be that way because Samsung is now rumored to replace the earpiece with Sound on Display technology. The chin seems to be slimmer than the Galaxy Note 9 as well.

Galaxy Note 10 could adopt Sound on Display

These adjustments would enable Samsung to fit larger displays without having to significantly increase the device’s size. The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro are expected to feature 6.3-inch and 6.75-inch displays respectively. Removing the earpiece would certainly allow for the display to be stretched a bit further.

In that case, Samsung would have to rely on its Sound on Display technology. This has been one method of killing the notch that Samsung has been considering. It first showcased its Sound on Display technology at the Samsung OLED Forum in China last year. The company also showed off these OLED panels at CES 2019 in January. Products with this technology were expected to arrive later in the year.

Leakster @UniverseIce claims that the Sound on Display technology will replace the earpiece on the Galaxy Note 10. In that scenario, piezoelectric vibrations transmit the sound to the user’s ear through the display. Samsung has implemented similar technology on one of its new affordable devices. As we pointed out in our Galaxy M40 review, the maximum call volume is very low and calls feel hollow. Samsung could just improve on this front for its flagship phablet.

What would the absence of an earpiece mean for stereo sound? It may adopt the same solution as the LG G8 which already has this technology, or as LG calls it, “Crystal Sound OLED.” The conventional bottom-facing speaker is paired with the piezoelectric speaker for 2-channel stereo sound.

All of this remains unsubstantiated so take this with a grain of salt. There’s always the possibility that the leaked films we have been seeing so far are from a prototype that didn’t make the cut. Such rumors and leaks will continue until the Galaxy Note 10 is unveiled. Samsung is expected to do that on August 7 in New York City.

Samsung executive says the Galaxy Fold is ‘ready to hit the market’

Samsung has still not confirmed when it will launch its first foldable smartphone. The Galaxy Fold was supposed to be released on April 26 in the United States. Samsung had to delay the launch due to some issues with the device that were pointed out by reviewers who had received test units.

The company took all of the test units back and promised to address the issues. Subsequent reports detailed the changes that Samsung made to the Galaxy Fold. A Samsung executive has now said that the Galaxy Fold is “ready to hit the market.”

Galaxy Fold release date still remains a mystery

Samsung Display Vice President Kim Seong-cheol said during this speech at The Korean Information Display Society that “Most of the display problems have been ironed out, and the Galaxy Fold is ready to hit the market.” Samsung Display is the affiliate company that’s providing the foldable displays for this device. Kim also mentioned that he has high expectations for the device. “The Galaxy Fold, when released, will receive a lot of attention in the market,” he added.

His comments bring us no closer to finding out exactly when the Galaxy Fold is going to be launched. There have been so many contradictory reports about when the Galaxy Fold will be out. It was suggested that a media briefing would be held later this month and the device would be released in July. However, a Samsung official cited in a report last week suggested that nothing has been done to prepare for a media event this month.

That’s not to say that Samsung still can’t release the device in July but all of this contradictory information is only adding to the confusion. Hopefully, Samsung will be able to provide a clear roadmap for the Galaxy Fold in the near future.

Galaxy Note 10 launch date reportedly set for August 7

Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed the Galaxy Note 10 launch date as yet. However, a new report suggests that the company is going to unveil the device on August 7. The launch event will reportedly take place in New York City.

The venue is said to be the Barclays Center. That’s the same venue where Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 9 last year. It was already expected that this year’s flagship would also be unveiled in the month of August. There have been no reports to the contrary so far.

Galaxy Note 10 launch date might be August 7

If that is the case, we should be hearing an official confirmation from Samsung in the not too distant future. The company had confirmed on June 27 last year that the Galaxy Note 9 launch will take place on August 9, 2018.

Citing people familiar with the company’s plans, CNET reports that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Note 10 during an Unpacked event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 7. However, the report cautions that the plans could be changed since there’s still about two months to go until the event.

Even if the date is changed, it’s unlikely at this point in time that the launch would be delayed beyond August. There have been no rumors of a delayed launch at this point in time. So that’s not something which should be a concern for Galaxy Note fans.

Samsung is due to launch two models of the flagship phablet – the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro. They’ll feature a 6.3-inch and 6.75-inch display respectively with a vertical camera system at the back. There’s also enough circumstantial evidence to believe that they might be the first phablets from Samsung to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack.

If the Galaxy Note 10 launch date is indeed August 7, we should receive a confirmation from Samsung in about a week or so. Who’s excited?

[Poll] Does your Galaxy S10+’ pill-shaped screen cutout still bother you?

Galaxy fans weren’t happy when word got out that Samsung would be introducing notches to its smartphones. The Korean giant took a different approach by drilling a hole on the corner of the screen for the front camera, and the first Galaxy device with a punch-hole display cutout was the Galaxy A8s in late 2018, followed by the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10+.

Many complained about Samsung caving in to industry trends after having trolled the competition (mainly Apple) for putting notches on their phones. However, Samsung’s approach looked less obtrusive compared to the iPhone-like notch that was also adopted by companies like Huawei and OnePlus. Well, it looked less obtrusive on the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10. The Galaxy S10+’ display cutout is wider because it has two front-facing cameras, and it’s quite the eyesore when you first lay your eyes on it.

But it’s been more than three months since the Galaxy S10 trio went on sale, and it would be safe to assume that some Galaxy S10+ owners would have gotten used to that pill-shaped screen cutout by now. And we’d love to know if that’s actually the case, which is where this poll comes in: Does that pill-shaped cutout on your Galaxy S10+ still bother you? Have you learned to ignore it or at least be less concerned about its existence? Tell us by voting in the poll below, then take to the comments section to expand on your thoughts!

Galaxy Note 10 Pro might not have dual front cameras, and that’s okay

Earlier this month, Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro renders showed up for the first time, and they both had one thing in common: A single front camera placed in the center of the display. With the Galaxy S10+ sporting dual front cameras and the Galaxy S10 5G having four, many of us expected the Galaxy Note 10 Pro would have two front cameras at the very least. But it doesn’t look like that will be the case, and that’s probably a good thing.

Why? First off, the pill-shaped dual front camera cutout on the Galaxy S10+ looks rather ugly, and the three-camera setup on the 5G model looks even worse. Secondly, having a second camera doesn’t really make for substantially better bokeh selfies, as we had seen when we compared Live Focus selfies taken with a Galaxy S10e and an S10+. Well, there’s certainly some difference, but it’s not big enough to justify having to bear the sight of that pill-shaped cutout when you’re not taking selfies.

And with the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Pro expected to have centered front camera cutouts, a dual camera setup is out of the question. However, the Galaxy Note 10 5G might have two front cameras, with the second one being a ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensor to enable background blur in videos and augmented reality experiences. At least that’s what we expect, especially after Samsung made a big deal about how 5G speeds will enable consumers to do more with the imaging prowess of the Galaxy S10 5G.

The Galaxy Note 10 is a couple of months away from launch, so it’s possible the actual product won’t be like the one we are seeing in all the leaks that are floating out there right now. But chances of that happening are slim if history is any guide. These leaks and rumors more often than not turn out to be accurate, and the Note 10 Pro is most likely going to have only a single selfie shooter like its less feature-packed sibling.

And that’s okay.
