Good Vibes turns phones into Morse communication tools for deafblind

Samsung India announced the release of a new mobile application designed to give deafblind people a way to communicate via a smartphone. The app is called Good Vibes and, as the name implies, it uses vibrations generated by the smartphone’s haptic motor to translate regular text into Morse code. The app has a secondary UI where it can also translate Morse code into text or voice, so it offers a two-way communication method.

Good Vibes is now available for download through the Galaxy Store and will launch through the Google Play Store for “for all other Android smartphone users soon.” Along with Good Vibes, Samsung India also announced – or rather re-launched –Relúmĭno. The app was developed by Samsung’s C-Lab division and was originally showcased way back at Mobile World Congress 2017.

Samsung taking ‘Do What You Can’t‘ to heart

Relúmĭno was created to assist visually-impaired people through heavy image processing. The app manipulates images by adjusting color contrast and brightness, highlighting outlines, magnifying, and reversing colors, intending to make images and objects easier to read. The app generally requires some accompanying hardware like the Gear VR headset, and Samsung along with the National Association for the Blind (NAB) Delhi will provide the equipment in classrooms to help students with low vision.

“We are happy we were able to develop technologies such as Good Vibes and Relúmĭno that will help improve quality of life of the deafblind and people with low vision […]” claimed Peter Rhee, Corporate VP, Samsung India.

Head of Advocacy and Networks at Sense India, Parag Namdeo, said “Good Vibes is going to create a platform where our society will be able to communicate with deafblind people using smartphones. Samsung is doing exactly what it believes in ‘Do What You Can’t.’”

The launch of the Good Vibes mobile application is accompanied by a new video ad by Samsung which is quite emotional and reminds us how technology can help to improve our lives when and where it really counts.

Galaxy A50s set to launch in India on September 11

In a bid to stay competitive in the budget and mid-range smartphone segments, Samsung has been launching slightly modified variants of its existing A series devices. The Galaxy A50 was launched just around six months back, but the Korean company has already announced an upgraded version last month in the form of Galaxy A50s.

Going by the teasers on Samsung India’s social media accounts, it appears the Galaxy A50s is set to launch in the country on September 11. Through a social media contest, the company also confirmed the presence of Samsung Pay and Night Mode in the A50s. Though not explicitly stated in the teasers, the A50s will most probably offer MST-based Samsung Pay since it is supposed to be an upgrade to the existing A50.

To recap the specs from the announcement, the Galaxy A50s is identical to the A50, except for the upgraded cameras on the back and the front. It comes with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, an optical in-display fingerprint reader, Exynos 9610 SoC, 48 MP + 8 MP + 5 MP triple-camera setup on the back, 32 MP selfie camera, 4/6GB of RAM, 64GB/128GB internal storage, 4,000mAh battery, 15W fast charging, and Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top.

Currently, it is not clear if the Galaxy A30s, which was unveiled along with the A50s, will also make its debut in the subcontinent. We are inclined to believe it does. Apart from India, both the devices are also slated to go on sale in Vietnam very soon.

Samsung organizes world’s first concert tailor-made for vertical video

Samsung recently inaugurated the Samsung KX experience store in King’s Cross, London. As part of the launch celebrations, the Korean company organized the world’s first vertical-stage concert to cater to the growing popularity of vertical videos. UK pop star Mabel and her band performed at the event, which saw around 2,000 Londoners gather at Samsung KX to enjoy the gig.

Samsung built a three-story stage which had the DJ, the band, Mabel and her dancers performing on different levels to perfectly fit into a vertical video for Instagram and other social media services. Harman technology, a subsidiary of Samsung which specializes in audio equipment, was also involved in the experiment.

Sharing the reviews on the gig, Mabel said, “London will always be close to my heart as I’ve made so much music here and I’m honoured and excited to headline the world’s first vertical gig at Samsung KX. This type of forward-thinking performance paves the way for more innovation within the city’s live music scene.”

“We are thrilled to deliver a world first music event for our guests at Samsung KX; this experience was designed to give fans the ultimate performance tailored specifically for instant sharing. We pride ourselves on creating innovations that defy barriers and tonight’s vertical stage performance alongside a panel of thought leaders showcased how if we work together, we can do just that,” said Tanya Weller, Director of Samsung KX Showcase.

Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy A90 5G and Galaxy Tab S6 get ARCore support

Google continues to add support for new Samsung devices to ARCore, its software-based augmented reality platform. The most recent devices to pick up support for the platform included the Galaxy Tab S5e and a handful of new Galaxy A phones. Samsung’s newest devices have now been added to the list as well. The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+, Galaxy A90 5G and the Galaxy Tab S6 have all received ARCore support.

Google has made a slight change to the app’s listing in the Play Store as well. It has decided to rebrand the app from ARCore to “Google Play Service for AR.” Perhaps the name change is meant to highlight that the app is quite like the regular Play Services in that it isn’t a usable app itself instead it brings SDKs which allow other apps to provide AR experiences.

ARCore support live for Samsung’s latest devices

Apps based on this platform are able to superimpose computer-generated objects and shapes on the real world as they’re viewed through the device’s camera. Users can then move these objects and shapes around either by walking with the device or relying on the sensors to detect movement.

The ARCore platform was developed by Google to enable augmented reality experiences on smartphones without requiring any special hardware. So bringing support to these new devices is just a matter of rolling out an app update. Many developers have since used the platform to create different apps and games that offer AR experiences. Now, users with a Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy A90 5G or a Galaxy Tab S6 will be able to enjoy them as well.

Samsung sold 2 million 5G smartphones, expects 4 million by year’s end

2 million 5G-enabled Samsung smartphones have been sold by the company this year, revealed JuneHee Lee, senior vice president and head of the company’s technology strategy team, during Qualcomm’s presentation at IFA in Berlin. With the advent of the Galaxy Fold 5G and the Galaxy A90 5G, the company now expects the figure to double by the end of the year.

This is quite an accomplishment considering the fact that Samsung doesn’t have a lot of 5G smartphones on the market. Its first 5G mobile device – the Galaxy S10 5G – debuted in South Korea on April 5, and since then, no other 5G handset was released until the Galaxy Note 10 5G arrived in the country late last month.

The Galaxy S10 5G is seemingly leading the pack

The Galaxy S10 5G alone surpassed the 1 million mark in South Korea a couple of months ago. This means that the remaining 1 million units were sold over the past two months. The Galaxy Note 10 5G series undoubtedly helped to push the bar up to 2 million sales, especially since the LTE models are not available in South Korea.

Samsung predicts it will manage to sell 4 million 5G smartphones by the end of the year. The recently-announced Galaxy A90 5G (hands-on) will be the company’s most affordable (or least expensive) 5G smartphone on the market once it hits the shelves for €749. The Galaxy Fold 5G, on the other hand, finds itself at the opposite end of the spectrum as the company’s most expensive 5G smartphone.

5G should become more widespread next year. And with Samsung’s latest Exynos 980 5G-enabled chipset set to enter mass production by the end of 2019, the technology will become easier to obtain across a more varied price range next year.
