Galaxy A30 and J2 Core receive October 2019 security patch

The October 2019 security patch is now rolling out for the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy J2 Core, specifically the model numbers SM-A305GT and SM-J260G, respectively. Google has yet to detail the changes brought forth by the latest Android security patch and it’s unclear if Samsung introduced any new features along with the latest software release.

What’s interesting about this launch is that the Galaxy A30 also received the September 2019 security patch, even though the device is on to the quarterly security update schedule – same as the Galaxy J2 Core.

Case in point, the Galaxy A50 also received the October 2019 security update this week, but it previously skipped the September release. It’s not uncommon, though, perhaps an important fix needed to be sent out for the device. We will know for certain once the patch gets detailed in a couple of days.

At the time of writing, the October 2019 security patch is available for the Galaxy A30 in Brazil and Peru, and for the Galaxy J2 Core in Nepal. As usual, availability will gradually expand and reach more model numbers over the next few days and weeks. If the software package is already available in your region, you can download it over the air by tapping the notification on your phone. You can also check our firmware pages for the SM-A305GT and SM-J260G, and install it manually.

Did you know? Super Slow-mo clips can be saved in reverse

Numerous Galaxy smartphones take advantage of Super Slow-mo video recording, whether it’s right out of the box or after receiving the feature through a software update. Super Slow-mo allows users to record 0.4 seconds or 0.8 seconds of video at 960 frames per second, which results in around 14 and 26 seconds of super slow motion playback. But did you know that you can also save your Super Slow-mo recording in reverse?

With most Galaxy devices that support the feature, users can access the Gallery app and save two separate copies of a Super Slow-mo recording. One copy is played back in reverse, while the other is in forward & reverse. Similar results could technically be achieved with a video editor, but the method offered by Samsung right in the Gallery app is very straightforward – if not somewhat hidden – and doesn’t require any fiddling with sliders or timelines.

You can access the feature by opening the Gallery app, selecting the desired Super Slow-mo video, and swiping up (or tapping the three-dot context menu and selecting Details). Here you will see details on when and where the video was captured, its duration, size, location on the phone storage, etc. More to the point at hand, you will also notice three Super Slow-mo clips listed below, including the original version along with the versions played back in Reverse and Forward & Reverse.

Select the desired clip, tap Save in the upper-right corner, and select a file type. We recommend MP4 if the larger file size isn’t an issue, as the GIF format leads to fewer frames and a choppier video. Below are a couple of video samples (saved in MP4 format) showcasing the regular, Reverse, and Forward & Reverse slow-motion effects.

The feature is available on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series, as well as the Galaxy S9, Note 9, and Galaxy S8, but it’s not limited to flagships. It should also be offered by a few devices from the Galaxy A lineup, such as the Galaxy A50, the Galaxy A7 (2018), and Galaxy A9 (2018), but it is not available on the Galaxy A40 or the Galaxy A6+. In other words, if you own a Galaxy device with Super Slow-mo recording capabilities, make sure you check and see if these light editing options are shown inside your Gallery app. Feel free to share your findings in the comment section below.

Samsung expands Art Store with renowned works from the State Hermitage Museum

Samsung complements the Frame TV hardware with a digital Art Store that features famous paintings and photographs from world-renowned artists, museums, and photographers. The Art Store currently has more than 1,200 such works, and the company is adding a few more to the collection by partnering with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Samsung says the Art Store will get 52 new works of art from various Russian and European painters by May 2020 as part of this partnership. These include “The Church Parade of the Finnish Life Guards Regiment” by Boris Kustodiev, “Poppy Field” by Claude Monet, “Rave te hiti aamu” by Paul Gauguin, “Houses Along a Road” by Paul Cezanne, “Boulevard Montmartre in Paris” by Camille Pissarro, “Lion Hunt in Morocco” by Eugene Delacroix, “Meetings of Abraham and Melchizedek” by Peter Paul Rubens, and more.

The Korean company already has such partnerships with a few other museums around the world, and the State Hermitage joins that list as the first Russian Museum. To display any of their artworks on the Frame TV, customers can either purchase the digital versions outright or subscribe to the Art Store at $5.99 per month for the complete collection.

Official Disney cases for Galaxy S10, A series phones available in some countries

Official Disney-themed cases for the Galaxy S10 and a few other Galaxy devices, like the Galaxy A40, Galaxy A50, and Galaxy A70, have gone on sale in some countries. Samsung has been selling Marvel-themed cases for its devices for some time, and the Disney cases seem to be a new addition. Right now, only two designs are available, one with the Lion King’s Circle of Life theme and another with Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, but we can expect more options to show up later on.

Like the Marvel cases, the Disney cases are smart cases and will change the home screen and lock screen wallpapers, theme, and the app icons on a device. The cases are made of hard plastic, and the ones for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are listed for €39.95-€39.99 on various retailer websites in the Netherlands, while the Galaxy A40, A50, and A70 cases cost €34.95-€34.99. Samsung is simply linking to those retailers instead of selling the cases itself, at least in the Netherlands and Latvia, two countries where we can confirm the cases are available.

Galaxy Fold launched in India for Rs. 1,64,999 (~$2320)

Samsung has made the Galaxy Fold official in India today, as it had promised. Those who had been looking forward to getting their hands on one might be put off by the price tag Samsung has attached to its foldable phone. At Rs. 1,64,999, or around $2320 based on current conversion rates, the Fold is priced considerably higher in India than other markets, no doubt because Samsung isn’t making the device locally as it does its non-foldable flagship phones.

Customers in India will have to prebook the Galaxy Fold via Samsung’s official online and offline stores, including the Samsung Opera House in Bengaluru. Pre-bookings start this Friday, October 4, and shipments will begin from October 20. Only the Cosmos Black color option will be available. Every customer who buys the device online will be visited by a concierge who will help them set up their Fold and help them understand everything they would need to do to take care of their shiny new foldable phone. The Galaxy Fold Premier Service will offer 24×7 on-call support and a one-time screen replacement for a discounted fee of Rs. 10,500.

Galaxy Fold is India’s first Snapdragon-powered Galaxy flagship in recent years

The Galaxy Fold, for those who need a refresher, comes with a foldable 7.3-inch AMOLED display and a 4.6-inch cover display, also of the AMOLED variety. It is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, a first for a Galaxy flagship in India, and has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There’s a 4,380 mAh battery under the hood with support for fast wireless and reverse wireless charging (but not 25W wired charging). A capacitive fingerprint sensor is located on the right side of the device, below the power button.

There are six cameras: a triple camera setup on the back that’s usable both in phone and tablet form. There’s a 12MP primary F1.5/2.4 Dual Aperture camera, a 12MP F2.4 telephoto camera for 2x zoom, and a 16MP ultra-wide F2.2 camera. There’s a dual front camera above the 7.3-inch main display consisting of 10MP F2.2 and 8MP F1.9 sensors, and a single 10MP F2.2 camera above the cover display. The Galaxy Fold runs Android Pie with One UI 1.5 and supports Samsung Pay. It also comes bundled with the Galaxy Buds and lacks a headphone jack.

Samsung gets innovation award for the Galaxy S10’s Wi-Fi capabilities

Samsung has been awarded the ‘Best Wi-Fi Innovation Award’ by the Wireless Broadband Alliance for the Galaxy S10’s Wi-Fi capabilities. The Galaxy S10 is the first smartphone ever to win this award, and the two innovations in question are the S10’s support for Wi-Fi 6 networks and its Intelligent Wi-Fi features. Some of the latter are available on every Galaxy flagship, not just the Galaxy S10 devices, while Wi-Fi 6 support is present on the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Fold as well.

As Samsung explains, Intelligent Wi-Fi uses “machine learning to ensure that users’ Wi-Fi connections are both smart and safe.” Found in the Advanced menu of the Wi-Fi settings panel on a Galaxy S10 and other Galaxy devices, Intelligent Wi-Fi can detect suspicious activity over a network and warn the user, turn Wi-Fi on automatically when the user is in a location where Wi-Fi is used frequently (like your home or office), and switch to mobile data when the connection to a Wi-Fi network isn’t strong enough. Samsung even says that Intelligent Wi-Fi allows the Galaxy S10 to more quickly detect weaker Wi-Fi signals inside elevators.

While Wi-Fi 6 is now supported on multiple Galaxy flagships, the Galaxy S10 was the first smartphone in the industry to come certified for the newest Wi-Fi standard. Wi-Fi 6, or 802.11ax as it’s technically called, offers up to 20 percent faster data transfer than Wi-Fi 5 (or 802.11ac, which is what all the 5GHz Wi-Fi networks are based on), especially when multiple devices are connected to a router. It does this while eating less battery power, although it will be a long time before Wi-Fi 6-enabled routers become affordable for the average consumer. Still, having support for it when you spend $1000 on a flagship smartphone makes sense, even if the technology won’t be usable in the immediate future.
