Galaxy Tab S6 goes on sale in China for the base price of $750

The Galaxy Tab S6 is now available for purchase in China, where prospective buyers have the option of picking between three colors and two memory/storage configurations.

The tablet has a starting price of 5,299 Yuan ($750). Samsung is also selling the Galaxy Tab S6 coupled with the keyboard cover, but only in gray.

Best 2019 Android tablet arrives in China

The Galaxy Tab S6 is, in our eyes, the best Android tablet of 2019 for many good reasons which we’ve detailed before. It’s Samsung’s first tablet to feature dual rear-facing cameras and boasts a new S Pen as well as various high-end internal components.

Samsung’s flagship tablet is geared towards productivity as much as it is a multimedia powerhouse. It sports a Snapdragon 855 chipset just like the Galaxy Note 10 series in some markets and has a beautiful 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 by 1600.

The model with 128GB of storage is paired with 6GB of RAM, but customers can also pick the 256GB model featuring 8GB of RAM. It costs 5,999 Yuan ($850); same as the 128GB model paired with the keyboard cover. Meanwhile, Samsung China lists a price of 6,699 Yuan ($949) for the 256GB model with 8GB of RAM and the keyboard cover bundled together. At the time of this writing, the tablet is in stock on Samsung’s website but the keyboard cover combo is not.

Galaxy S10 Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta starting in India on October 21

Samsung has made it official that the Galaxy S10 Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta program will be extending to India on October 21. The announcement comes in the Samsung Members app. October 21 is also the date when the Galaxy Note 10 One UI 2.0 beta program is expected to start, but even if that happens, it’s not guaranteed that Galaxy Note 10 owners in India will also get beta access on the same day. Last year, it was the Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie beta program that launched in India first, with the Galaxy S9 beta following a week after.

The Galaxy S10 beta update that Samsung will release in India next Monday may well be the second beta update for markets where the beta program is already live. Something similar happened last year: The first beta update that was released in India for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ was the third beta update for those in the US. Furthermore, it’s possible some of the other countries where we recently confirmed the beta would be available will also join the party on October 21, although nothing is certain at this time.

In short, Samsung will keep adding new markets to the beta program as it continues work on the Android 10 update, and it looks like India will be the first on the list. One UI 2.0 feature focus: Dark/Night mode darkens wallpaper as well

Samsung beat everyone to the punch by introducing a system-wide Night mode to its software with Android Pie, a year before something similar would become a part of the core Android OS. With Android 10, Samsung has renamed Night mode to Dark mode, which is what Google calls it on stock Android, and Samsung has also made a very sensible addition to the feature: Dark mode on Android 10 and One UI 2.0 can be made to darken the wallpaper as well.

If you have used Night mode extensively on a Galaxy S10 or another Galaxy device running Android Pie, you will realize why the option to darken the wallpaper is important. While the system-wide dark interface makes things easy on the eyes at night, it doesn’t help when you go to the home screen and you have a bright wallpaper active. On Android 10, that is no longer an issue.

If you want, you can make your home screen wallpaper darker when Dark mode is enabled. Don’t worry, Samsung doesn’t go overboard here, as you can see in the picture above (the left picture has the wallpaper darkened, the right one has the option turned off). The brightness of the wallpaper is reduced only to a slight extent, so you can still enjoy the wallpaper while preventing your eyes from getting blinded when using the phone in the dark.

You can set whether Dark mode darkens the wallpaper by opening the Settings app, tapping Display, tapping Dark mode, then toggling the Apply to wallpaper option. You can also schedule the times at which Dark mode should be enabled or disabled from the same menu, in addition to turning it off and on completely (which can also be done via the Dark mode toggle in the notification shade).

Samsung secures sixth rank in Best Global Brands 2019 by Interbrand

Samsung Electronics has secured the sixth rank in the ‘Best Global Brands 2019’ study by Interbrand, a US-based consultancy firm. The study pegs the Korean company’s brand value at $61.1 billion – an increase of 2% when compared to last year. Samsung secured the same rank last year as well. Its brand value has been steadily increasing over the last decade.

Apple topped the rankings with a brand value of $234.2 billion, followed by the maker of Android, Google, at $167.7 billion, Amazon at $125.2 billion, and Microsoft at $108.8 billion. Coca Cola is the only non-tech company in the top five with a brand value of $61.3 billion. Interbrand takes into consideration, among other things, the financial performance of the brand, its ability to create loyalty and influence purchase decisions to arrive at the brand value.

The study attributes Samsung’s ranking to the launch of innovative products such as the BESPOKE refrigerator, Sero TV, and the Galaxy Fold. The company’s leadership in the semiconductor market and the strong growth potential in areas such as 5G, AI, IoT, etc. also contributed to the ranking.

“We are excited that our constant efforts to provide meaningful innovations that delight consumers and help them live better lives have been well received. To further enhance our brand, we will continue to listen and learn from our consumers as well as lead changes in society through innovation, so that we can all thrive together,” said YH Lee, CMO of Samsung Electronics.

Galaxy Fold 2 could introduce Samsung’s under-display camera tech

Samsung’s under display camera (UDC) technology, which would place the front camera under the display and not in a hole punched into the screen, could make its debut next year with the Galaxy Fold 2, according to a report from The Elec. Samsung will reportedly use the same laser technology — called Hole-In-Active-Area (HIAA) — used to drill the holes on the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 displays to place the camera under a supposedly transparent display. The company is apparently going to start mass production of UDC panels early next year.

As noted in the report, putting cameras under the display on a smartphone requires not just innovation in the display-making process but also in the camera’s software. Polyimide, the material used for the foldable display on the Galaxy Fold, adds a yellow tinge to the image that the camera receives when it’s sitting under the display, and the image also blurs when it passes through the display. While a transparent substrate can circumvent the first issue, new software algorithms are needed to get around the second problem.

It’s also difficult to produce too many panels that incorporate Samsung’s UDC tech. That might be why the company has chosen to implement it on the Galaxy Fold 2, which is likely to be sold in limited quantities like the original Fold, instead of the Galaxy S11. Even Samsung’s punch-hole Infinity display was first introduced in an A series phone instead of the Galaxy S lineup. But, while the Galaxy S10 also had a punch-hole display, it doesn’t look like Samsung will be able to make enough UDC panels to put them on the Galaxy S11.

Of course, the possibility that the Galaxy Fold 2 will have the camera under the display is not something written in stone. Samsung had said earlier this year that under display camera technology is still at least one or two years away from being seen on smartphones; the Galaxy Fold 2’s launch would fit within that time frame, but the nature of the technology and the skill required to bring it to fruition mean there is no telling exactly when things will be ready for commercial deployment.

Major Galaxy S10/Note 10 fingerprint flaw will be fixed with software update

Samsung will fix the recently discovered fingerprint vulnerability on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series with a software update. For those who missed it, it was recently reported that certain silicone gel cases, when installed on a Galaxy S10, can allow anyone to access the phone using the fingerprint scanner even when their fingerprints aren’t registered on the device. Some silicone cases cover the entire phone, and the issue stems from the dotted pattern on some of those cases.

Ultrasonic sensors work by transmitting high-frequency ultrasonic sound waves at the user’s finger and matching the details of your fingerprint against the fingerprint stored on the device based on how the sound waves are reflected back. When a user registers their fingerprint with a silicone case on, the fingerprint reader isn’t able to read the finger’s ridges and pores as much as it reads the dotted pattern on the case, effectively making the dotted pattern the saved fingerprint and granting everyone access when they press down on the fingerprint reader.

Exactly how the software update will fix this problem is unclear, but until the update comes out, Samsung suggests that everyone use the company’s official screen protectors. Plastic screen protectors work best with the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on Samsung’s flagship phones, as thicker screen protectors make it harder for the sensor to detect fingerprints because of the gap they create between the display and the user’s finger. Some liquid adhesive-based glass protectors overcome that limitation, but Samsung is unwilling to put its seal of approval on any but its own screen protectors.

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 9 gets October 2019 security update

Sprint has released a new update for the Galaxy Note 9, bringing the October 2019 security patch to the device. Sprint is the first carrier in the US to update the Note 9 with the newest security patch and is doing so a little over a week after the unlocked Exynos-powered Galaxy Note 9 was updated in other markets. The software version on Sprint’s variant will be bumped to N960USQS2CSI5 after the October update has been installed.

Don’t expect to see any new features included in the update; Samsung is likely to keep major changes for the Android 10 update for both the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9. The company is already testing Android 10 and One UI 2.0 for the two smartphones, and it’s possible it will also launch a beta program to let customers try out the next major Android upgrade ahead of its stable release, but nothing is confirmed at this moment. Galaxy S10 owners in the US are currently testing out the One UI 2.0 beta, and Sprint is one of two carriers who are letting their users take part in the program.

You can update your Galaxy Note 9 over the air if you’re on Sprint’s network from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. Another way to get your phone on the latest software is to download firmware from our firmware archive and manually flash it using a Windows PC.
