Galaxy A50 November security update released in Europe and the US

The Galaxy A50 is now receiving an update with the November 2019 security patch. The update is rolling out for the unlocked variant in the US and in more than 20 markets in Europe, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Bulgaria, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, and Poland. The update for the US comes with software version A505U1UES3ASJ3 and the one released in Europe has software version A505FNXXS2ASK1.

The considerably wide rollout of the November update for the Galaxy A50 is quite similar to how the November update was released for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 in almost every country across the globe in a matter of days. However, it’s just a regular security update with the latest Android security patch for the Galaxy A50. What the latest security patch entails is a mystery for now, but it should only be a matter of time before Google and Samsung detail the November 2019 security patch.

Own a Galaxy A50? You can download the update on your phone from the Settings » Software update menu by tapping the Download and install option. You may have to do that a couple of times before the update starts downloading. You can also upgrade your A50 by flashing the latest firmware on it using a Windows PC. Galaxy S10 Lite design may be a mix of Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S9+

A patent granted to Samsung by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) may have revealed what the Galaxy S10 Lite will look like. Judging by all the rumors and our own exclusive reports, Samsung is getting serious about making ‘Lite’ versions of its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note flagships, and the Galaxy S10 Lite could be the first device to make an official appearance as part of that new strategy. The Galaxy S10 Lite is expected to share its specs with the Galaxy A91, and it might share its design with both the Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy S9.

The patent reveals a device that looks exactly like the Galaxy S10+ from the front, with dual front-facing cameras located on the top right edge of the display. At the back, there’s a dual camera setup with its sensors placed vertically in the center and an LED flash to its right, which is exactly how the camera assembly is laid out on a Galaxy S9+. In fact, it looks pretty similar to a Galaxy S8 prototype that Samsung had tested with dual rear cameras back in 2017, although that prototype had its LED flash and heart rate sensor sitting below the two camera sensors.

Unfortunately, there is never a guarantee that a design or product seen in a patent application will see the light of day. However, this is the only visual clue we have about the Galaxy S10 Lite’s design. And it is quite plausible as well. Being a Galaxy S10 variant, it would be no surprise if the Galaxy S10 Lite looks similar to other Galaxy S10 models, and we only need to wait and see how closely — or not so closely — the final design will match what is shown in the patent.

Galaxy S10 and Note 10 now let you check biometrics security patch info

With the most recent software update, the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 let users check the version of the biometrics security patch on the device. This is a move Samsung made after the recent drama around the S10 and Note 10’s in-display fingerprint reader’s susceptibility to being fooled by textured gel covers that cover the display. The Biometrics and security section in the device settings now has a new option called Biometrics security patch that, when tapped, reveals the current version of the patch.

To fix the flaw in the fingerprint reader, Samsung initially rolled out a biometrics update that would show up for anyone who had fingerprint recognition enabled on their Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Note 10. The company didn’t say how those who had fingerprint recognition disabled/had no fingerprints registered would get the patch, but it turns out that the November security update that Samsung has pushed out to the two flagships all over the world with surprising quickness installs that requisite fix on all devices, whether fingerprints recognition is enabled or not.

The latest biometrics security patch version for fingerprints is 2.0.25.21, and your Note 10 or S10 needs to be on at version 2.0.24.20 to be safe from the issue that allows anyone access to your device if you register your fingerprint with a textured silicone/gel case installed on the screen (here’s how to check if your phone is safe). If your device hasn’t received the biometrics security update or the November update that Samsung released earlier this week, you should delete all fingerprints and use an alternative biometrics option until your device is updated.

US Galaxy Note 10 trade-in program just got better, only for a limited time

Samsung’s trade-in program for the Galaxy Note 10 series in the US just got better, at least for a limited time. Prospective Note 10 buyers can now shave up to $600 off the Galaxy Note 10 / Note 10+ full retail price when trading in the Galaxy S10+ or the iPhone XS Max.

In other words, Samsung has increased the trade-in value for the two aforementioned flagships by an additional $100 when buying the Galaxy Note 10, up from the typical $500 discount. The good news continues, as the trade-in value for a multitude of other devices also got bumped up for the time being.

It’s a great time to trade-in for a new Galaxy Note 10

Prospective Galaxy Note 10 buyers in the United States are not limited to exchanging their Galaxy S10+ or iPhone XS Max to take advantage of a lower Note 10 price tag. In fact, the trade-in value for the much older iPhone 6S has now more than doubled. It got bumped from $75, all the way up to $200.

Likewise, Samsung Galaxy S10 owners willing to trade-in their phones will now shave $450 off the Galaxy Note 10/Note 10+ price instead of $400. Higher trade-in values apply for the Galaxy S10e, as well as the Galaxy S8 and S9 series, the Galaxy Note 8, and Galaxy Note 9. Google’s Pixel series got better deals as well.

You can check the Galaxy Note 10/Note 10+ US online store page for a full list of devices eligible for the trade-in program. Keep in mind that the improved values are not going to stick around forever, or even by the end of the week, so you might want to act fast if you wish to get the best out of Samsung’s trade-in program.

Premium Galaxy Fold & budget champion Galaxy M30s launch in Vietnam

Samsung is expanding its smartphone portfolio in Vietnam with the addition of two Galaxy devices that couldn’t have been more different from each other: the Galaxy M30s and Galaxy Fold.

The Galaxy Fold will be released in Vietnam by the end of November. No exact date was given. Meanwhile, the Galaxy M30s is already available online through third-party retail channel Tiki. Samsung is launching both of these phones in the same month, but let’s just say that there’s no risk of the M30s cannibalizing the Galaxy Fold sales figures by beating it to the market, as they clearly target different audiences.

Galaxy Fold launching in Vietnam this month

The Galaxy Fold will launch in Vietnam for VND 50,000,000 ($2,151). Samsung didn’t reveal any stock numbers but, to no one’s surprise, the phone will be sold in limited quantities. If the previous markets in which the Fold has been released so far are any indication, we’re looking at a few thousand units for the first batch, at the most.

Whether intentional or not, this sense of scarcity surrounding the Galaxy Fold might be playing on the FOMO phenomenon (people’s Fear Of Missing Out). It’s a unique first-generation device, and even though it has its flaws, it’s still a desirable item for a lot of enthusiasts. The device has been very successful so far – at least to the extent of its limited availability – and the initial batches have been sold out in pretty much every market. It remains to be seen if Vietnam will be any different.

Galaxy M30s, our value-for-money champion, arrives in Vietnam

Launching both the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy M30s in Vietnam in the same month may be an intentional juxtaposition of the cost-conscious and luxurious smartphone segments, but this doesn’t take away from the fact that the Galaxy M30s is an excellent device. After all, there’s a reason (or more) why we’ve dubbed it Samsung’s new value-for-money champion in our review.

The Galaxy M30s has specs similar to the Galaxy A50, all the while boasting a monstrous 6,000mAh battery, but it’s worth noting that battery life isn’t a whole lot better compared to the original Galaxy M30. It has a triple-camera setup, a generous 6.4-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, and sports a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Samsung has launched the Galaxy M30s in Vietnam for VDN 6,990,000 ($300) via Tiki. It’s available online in black, blue, and white. Interestingly enough, for one day only, on November 8, the retailer will offer the phone for the special price of VDN 5,990,000 ($257). Is it worth the wait? That’s a no brainer, as long as there are plenty of units in stock to last for more than a week.

Galaxy S10 and Note 10 November security update widely available

The November security update for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 started rolling out earlier this week in Switzerland, and it is now making its way to many more markets. Samsung doesn’t usually update its latest flagships with a new security patch as quickly as it updates mode affordable devices. It also doesn’t roll out the patch to more than a handful of countries in the first few days. However, the company seems to be making exceptions this time around.

Does the November update have something important?

The November update for both the S10 and Note 10 has even made its way to the United States already, so we can only assume there’s something in this month’s security patch that is important enough for Samsung to be hurrying things up. Perhaps that biometrics update the company released to fix the fingerprint reader flaw on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series wasn’t a complete fix and Samsung is now patching the flaw properly?

It is certainly possible. The changelog for the November update for some countries does mention improved fingerprint recognition algorithm in addition to enhanced security. Or, well, Samsung could simply be getting the November security update out of the way so it can focus on completing work on the Android 10 update for its 2019 flagships. In any case, it’s good to see this happening, and we hope quick security updates for flagship Galaxy devices become a regular occurence going forward.
