Samsung may soon open One UI 2.0 beta to the Galaxy Note 9

Samsung launched the One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy S10 series several weeks ago. It has since expanded the program to the Galaxy Note 10 as well. There was an expectation that it would ultimately add the Galaxy Note 9 to the beta program as well.

It appears that Samsung is gearing up to do just that. New firmware has been spotted which suggests that the Galaxy Note 9 might soon be eligible for the One UI 2.0 beta program. This bodes well for the Galaxy S9 series as well.

Galaxy Note 9 will likely receive the One UI 2.0 beta soon

We reported last month that Samsung has already started testing Android 10 for the Galaxy Note 9. It has also been doing this for the Galaxy S9. The company didn’t initially confirm if these devices would be added to the beta program.

However, given that the Android Pie beta program was opened up for the Galaxy Note 8 last year, there’s a good chance that we might get the One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note 9. Firmware version N960FXXU4ZSK2 is likely going to be the first beta release for last year’s flagship phablet.

Even though the beta has been made available in many markets for the Galaxy S10, many Galaxy Note 10 owners are still waiting for the beta to go live. It has been released in Germany so far. They would certainly appreciate if Samsung rolled out the beta for the Galaxy Note 10 widely before expanding the program to cover the Galaxy Note 9.

It should only be a matter of days now before Samsung officially confirms that the Galaxy Note 9 is also eligible for the beta. Samsung to develop more OLED laptop panels at different prices for 2020

More laptop models could adopt OLED display technology next year, all thanks to Samsung Display and the company’s push for expanding its already impressive OLED market share.

Samsung Display recently hosted the OLED Forum 2019 in Taipei where hundreds of officials representing various laptop brands – including ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo – had a closer look at Samsung’s laptop display solution for next year. According to The Korea Herald, the company intends to widen its product portfolio in 2020 and offer a 13.3-inch Full HD OLED panel alongside the existing higher-res solutions.

Samsung OLED benefits and adoption rate

Samsung’s OLED panels have several advantages over conventional LCD panels, including better outdoor visibility, lower power usage, and even shorter response times. They generally offer fantastic picture quality and their thinner profile allows manufacturers to create thinner laptops.

The popularity of OLED laptops increased significantly this year, with more than 10 OLED-powered models from a variety of brands including Dell, HP, and Lenovo to name a few, making their way onto store shelves. Popular 2019 models like the Dell XPS 15 and the Gigabyte Aero 15 are reliant on Samsung’s 15.6-inch 2160p displays.

While Samsung continues manufacturing and selling OLED panel for fairly powerful 15.6-inch laptops, Samsung Display is obviously looking to expand its customer base and supply more OEMs with its OLED panel solutions in 2020. One way to do this is to cover more price points. To this end, a new 13.3-inch Full HD OLED panel will reportedly be launched next year as a more cost-effective solution, giving Samsung Display better exposure and potentially bumping the company’s market share higher.

Exclusive: A Galaxy A71 5G (SM-A7160) could be headed to China

Samsung is not doing well in China. Its market share in the country is so inconsequential at this time that it could stop doing business in China altogether and no one would care. Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but Samsung’s prospects in China have been pretty bleak for a long time now, even forcing the company to stop manufacturing smartphones there just a month ago.

But, the Korean giant isn’t giving up yet, and it recently revealed that it’s hoping to drive growth in China’s 5G market. The Galaxy Fold 5G will soon make its way to the country as the Samsung W20 5G, but an expensive foldable phone is not going to be of much help in the grand scheme of things. Samsung will have to offer 5G smartphones that the masses can afford, and it looks like the company is going to do just that and is working on a Galaxy A series phone with 5G connectivity for China.

Samsung working on an SM-A7160 with 128GB of storage

We have learned that a Galaxy device with model number SM-A7160 and 128GB of storage is in the works. Now, we know the Galaxy A71 for global markets is the SM-A715F, and going by Samsung’s usual scheme for assigning model numbers to 5G variants of its smartphones, an SM-A716B would be the Galaxy A71 5G. And, considering the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G carries model number SM-N976B for global markets and SM-N9760 for China, the SM-A7160 could technically be the Galaxy A71 5G for the Chinese market.

In fact, the Galaxy A90 5G, which was launched earlier this year and is one of two 5G Galaxy phones available in China, is more or less a Galaxy A70 with faster connectivity (and more power), so there certainly is some precedent here. However, while there is no LTE variant of the Galaxy A90 anywhere in the world, Samsung might change that for the Galaxy A71. We cannot find signs of an SM-A716x in the making, so it’s possible the A71 5G — or whatever the SM-A7160 may ultimately be called – might just be for China.

A71 5G/SM-A7160 could be the first Exynos 980-powered Samsung phone

Whether or not it launches outside China, the SM-A7160 could be the first phone from Samsung to be powered by its mid-range 5G-equipped Exynos 980 chipset. Samsung currently uses the Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9825 chipsets for its 5G smartphones, but it will have to switch to mid-tier SoCs for 5G-enabled mid-range phones to keep the costs down. And that’s exactly where the Exynos 980 would come in.

The 980 will first be seen on a Vivo device and is an 8nm octa-core chip with two Cortex-A77 cores, six Cortex-A55 cores, and the Mali-G76 GPU. It has an integrated 5G modem that should help reduce power consumption compared to the Exynos 9825, which requires a separate 5G modem. The 980 also supports the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, which is currently exclusive to Samsung’s flagship smartphones, along with other impressive features like HDR10+ video decoding and support for 108MP camera sensors.

Samsung Email crosses 1 billion installs on Google Play Store

Samsung Email app has crossed 1 billion installs on Google Play Store, becoming only the second app from the company after Samsung Internet to achieve this milestone. Samsung Internet, the company’s most popular first-party app, reached the 1 billion mark in February this year after crossing 500 million installs around a year back.

While these numbers sound impressive, it’s worth remembering that both these apps come preloaded on Galaxy devices and that accounts for a vast majority of these installations. Also, Since Samsung distributes some of its apps through the Galaxy Store in select markets, the actual installation numbers may be significantly higher.

Samsung Email is a feature-packed email client that doesn’t get much love since most users just stick with the preloaded Gmail app. The Korean company’s email client works well with both personal and business accounts and supports features such as Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), S/MIME encryption, SPAM management, etc. It is the only option for customers if they prefer an email app with Samsung’s One UI design.

Despite the impressive installation numbers, the future of Samsung Email appears uncertain. After the recent partnership between Samsung and Microsoft, there are signs of Microsoft’s Android apps and services replacing many of Samsung’s first-party offerings on Galaxy devices. Microsoft’s Outlook app received S Pen support recently, bringing it one step closer to possibly replacing Samsung Email app sometime in the future.

Samsung files Space Zoom trademark for the Galaxy S11 camera

In the European Union, Samsung has applied for the trademark Space Zoom. This is likely to be the name of the zoom-feature on the upcoming Galaxy S11 lineup.

Earlier this week, a rumor surfaced that Samsung refers to the camera of the Galaxy S11 as Hubble. Though to many that name may have seemed a bit ‘out there’, a fresh trademark application seems to confirm Samsung’s train of thought.

Yesterday, the company filed paperwork for the trademark Space Zoom at the European Union Intellectual Property Office EUIPO. In it, we read the all-revealing description ‘software for use in smartphones, … mobile telephones and cameras, namely, software to zoom in to a subject without lowering image quality.‘ This leaves us with very little guessing room as to what Space Zoom will turn out to be.

A super zoom mode for the night sky or for everything?

Of course, such zoom capabilities completely align with other Galaxy S11 rumors. From the Hubble codename to Samsung’s plans for a significant camera upgrade with five times optical zoom, and possibly a 108-megapixel sensor, the puzzle pieces all seem to fit together nicely.

With such a camera upgrade, Samsung is playing along nicely with the market. Just recently, Google launched its Pixel 4 with the dedicated astrophotography mode. Huawei, meanwhile, has something called “Moon Mode” for taking pictures of the moon. While we do not know if Space Zoom will turn out to be aimed at the night sky, there is little doubt that massively improved zoom capabilities on Galaxy flagships after being stuck on 2x optical zoom since the Galaxy Note 8 made its debut in 2017.

Samsung Daily rolling out as Bixby Home replacement, but there’s a catch

Say goodbye to Bixby Home, and say hello to Samsung Daily, at least if you’re on the latest Android 10 beta on a Galaxy S10. If you’re on the newest Android 10 beta that Samsung released earlier today, you will find an update for Bixby Home in the Galaxy Store that turns it into Samsung Daily.

Samsung Daily is a rebranding of Bixby Home, which resides on the leftmost home screen on Galaxy devices and shows you news and other content from various services and websites in a card-based UI. Samsung Daily has no new functionality and the user interface remains the same as well. However, a few new services for news, videos, sports, and other content have been added. Some existing ones, like Flipboard, are still present, while services like Uber and Foursquare seem to have been removed.

Samsung had said at its developer conference last month that Samsung Daily would start rolling out in November, but according to the app’s changelog, the worldwide rollout will start by the end of the year, no doubt once the stable Android 10 update gets released. That doesn’t mean that Samsung Daily won’t be available on Android Pie, but for now, it’s only available for those that are running the latest Android 10 beta on their Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, or Galaxy S10 5G. It’s not available on the Android 10 beta on the Galaxy Note 10.

To get Samsung Daily, open the Galaxy Store on your phone, tap the three-dot button on the top right, tap My page, tap Update, then look for an update to Bixby Home and download it. You can also try tapping this link to open the Samsung Daily page directly on the Galaxy Store, although this will only work on Android 10 on a Galaxy S10 (you’ll be taken to the Bixby Home store listing on Android Pie).
