Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 are in development

Samsung has launched the first of its new 2020 Galaxy A handsets today. Many are now looking forward to the refresh of the Galaxy M lineup, the online-only series that did perform very well in the Indian market. As you’d expect, new Galaxy M models are now in development.

We hear from our sources that Samsung is working on the Galaxy M11 (SM-M115F) and the Galaxy M31 (SM-M315F). It appears that the new naming convention that Samsung is using for the 2020 Galaxy A series will be used for the Galaxy M series as well.

Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 have entered development

There’s not a lot of information available about the new Galaxy M handsets so far as they’re in an early stage of development. However, we do know that the Galaxy M11 and the Galaxy M31 will be offered with 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, respectively.

Given that this series also includes models like the Galaxy M40 and M20, it’s safe to assume that Samsung will eventually release the Galaxy M41 and the Galaxy M21 as well. It remains to be seen just what improvements Samsung makes to the lineup.

The 2020 Galaxy A series has picked up the Infinity-O display which places a punch hole in the center of the display for the front camera. It’s unclear if that’s going to be the case for the upcoming Galaxy M series as well. What we can expect are minor improvements in the power package and possibly significant upgrades for the camera.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 in January this year so it’s likely that we’ll see the new devices around the same time in 2020. The Galaxy M is an important component of Samsung’s smartphone strategy as it allows the company to effectively compete against the Chinese in the lucrative Indian market.

No wonder Samsung released Android 10 for the Galaxy M20 and M30 out of the blue in India today. It goes without saying that many will be looking forward to what the Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 have to offer.

Samsung Galaxy A51 vs Galaxy A50 specs comparison

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy A51 at a special event in Vietnam today. It is a successor to the Galaxy A50 launched in February last year. However, it’s not a major upgrade as it brings only modest design and spec updates. Nevertheless, these improvements still make it an attractive package given that the Galaxy A50 is already a compelling device.

Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy A51 sports a slightly bigger display and a new macro camera on the back. It also bumps the resolution of the primary, ultrawide, and selfie cameras. The device runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box, making it the first Galaxy device to launch with the latest software. The processor and other internals, however, remain unchanged, which many potential buyers might find disappointing.

Apart from the internals, the Galaxy A51 also sports a different design from its predecessor, as you can see in the images. On the front, the bezels are smaller with a punch-hole camera, making the A51 look a bit more modern and premium. On the back, it sports a large rectangular quad-camera module and a new gradient effect. The body of the device, however, is still made out of glossy plastic that Samsung refers to as ‘3D Glasstic’.

Whether all of these changes add up to make the Galaxy A51 a worthy successor to the A50 remains to be seen. We hope to answer this question in our review of the device that will be published soon.

Samsung Galaxy A71 vs Galaxy A70 specs comparison

Nine months after launching the Galaxy A70, Samsung today unveiled the Galaxy A71. This is the second new phone from Samsung’s 2020 Galaxy A lineup to be unveiled so far, the first being the Galaxy A51. Samsung has made some design improvements to the device and upgraded some of the specs. However, it has more than a few similarities with the Galaxy A70.

For starters, the display size is exactly the same on both devices, even though the Galaxy A71 uses an Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole for the selfie camera. Both devices are made of the same Glasstic material but Samsung has added a bit of splash to it with the new prism pattern and colors.

The Galaxy A71 offers significant improvements in the camera department even though some of its other specs remain the same as the Galaxy A70. Samsung has neither added a bigger battery nor ramped up the charging speed on the new model.

Samsung Galaxy A71 unveiled with Android 10 and Macro camera

While today’s event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is only about the Galaxy A51, Samsung has quietly unveiled the Galaxy A71 as well. There were rumors that suggested this device was going to be made official soon. That’s precisely what has happened today.

The successor to the Galaxy A70 has the same design signature that Samsung is pushing with the new Galaxy A series. This includes an Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole for the camera and the new L-shaped camera setup at the back.

Galaxy A71 also comes with a Macro camera

The Galaxy A71 features a 6.7-inch 1080×2400 pixel resolution Super AMOLED display, that’s exactly the same as the Galaxy A70, except that the latter had an Infinity-U notch. Made from Samsung’s Glasstic material, it measures in at 164.6 x 76.0 x 7.7 mm and weighs 179g. There’s an in-display fingerprint sensor as well.

It gets a slight bump in performance with the dual 2.2 GHz + hexa 1.8GHz octa-core chip, likely the Snapdragon 730, and will be offered with 6/8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It has the same 4,500mAh battery as its predecessor with support for 25W fast charging.

Much like the Galaxy A51, the real star here is the camera. The Galaxy A71 has a 64-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor compared to the Galaxy A70’s 32-megapixel shooter. It also gets a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide and a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor. The 5-megapixel f/2.4 Macro camera is an entirely new addition to the series. It will allow for improved close-up photography. There’s also a 32-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed when it’s going to make the Galaxy A71 available to the public. Pricing information is not yet known. It will be offered in Prism Crush Black, Silver, Blue and Pink colors. Since the Galaxy A51 is coming with Android 10, it goes without saying that the Galaxy A71 will too.

It’s pretty much the same story as the Galaxy A50. Some slight design changes, a minor bump in the specs and major improvements for the camera. Would that be enough to compel people to purchase the Galaxy A71? Only time will tell.

Galaxy A51 official with macro camera, Infinity-O display, Android 10

Samsung has finally announced the Galaxy A51, the first smartphone from the company’s 2020 Galaxy A series to go official. Thanks to all the leaks and rumors, it was already pretty clear what the Galaxy A51 will bring to the table, and Samsung has now confirmed everything that was already known.

Quad rear camera, Android 10, and more

A quad rear camera setup is the star of the show on the Galaxy A51. The A51 is the first Galaxy phone to feature a macro camera (a 5MP lens), making it possible to get close to a subject and capture details such as the subject’s texture. The ultra-wide camera is also getting a bump from an 8-megapixel sensor to a 12-megapixel sensor 123-degree field of view), while the primary rear camera is a 48MP lens like the one seen on the Galaxy A50s. The fourth camera is a 5MP depth sensor for enabling bokeh shots.

The other notable upgrade the Galaxy A51 brings over its predecessor is the Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole for the 32MP front camera. This Infinity-O display was first seen on the Galaxy Note 10 earlier this year – thanks to the smaller bezels, the A51 has a 6.5-inch screen despite being as tall as and slightly narrower than the Galaxy A50, which has a 6.4-inch panel. The Galaxy A51 also runs Android 10 out of the box with One UI 2.0, despite coming out months before the Galaxy S11.

Other specs on the Galaxy A51 are the same as they were on the Galaxy A50. There’s 4 or 6GB of RAM paired with 64GB or 128GB of storage, a 4,000 mAh battery with 15W fast charging, an optical on-screen fingerprint reader, and an Exynos 9611 SoC. The A50 is powered by the Exynos 9610, but the two chips have the same technical specs. As far as the design is concerned, the A51 has a “3D Glasstic” body like the A50 with a prism-like crisscross pattern and a gradient effect that changes depending on how the light hits it.

Priced at $350, goes on sale on December 27

The Galaxy A51 will go on sale in Vietnam on December 27 for 7,990,000 Vietnamese Dong, which translates to around $350, an excellent price for the hardware on offer. It will be available in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White, Prism Crush Pink, and Prism Crush Blue colors worldwide, but no pricing or release dates for other markets has currently been revealed.

Breaking: Galaxy M20 and M30 receiving Android 10 update in India

In a major surprise, Samsung has started rolling out the Android 10 update for the Galaxy M20 and M30 in India. Both these devices were supposed to receive the update in January, but, as is often the case, the update is rolling out earlier than promised. So far, the company has released the Android 10 stable update only for the Galaxy S10 lineup, making the M20 and the M30 the first set of budget devices to receive the latest Android version.

While some Galaxy flagship users — especially Note 10 owners — might feel disappointed that their devices are yet to receive the same update, it’s encouraging to see Samsung release Android version updates to its budget devices so quickly. Currently, the update appears to be available only in India, but you can expect that to change soon. The release for the Galaxy M20 and M30 comes the version number M205FDDU3CSL4 and M305FDDU3CSL4, respectively. The update also brings the December 2019 security patch to both these devices.

Android 10 and One UI 2.0 are relatively minor updates, but there is still enough here to get excited.
