Samsung braces for higher 5G demand in USA, buys TeleWorld Solutions

As Samsung grows its 5G clientele in the USA, so does the demand for end-to-end support solutions. To support its customers in the emerging 5G era – ranging from commercial network operators to businesses that own private networks – Samsung has announced that it has completed an agreement to acquire TeleWorld Solutions (TWS).

TWS is a network service provider located in Chantilly, Virginia, with expertise in testing, installing, and optimizing network services. It will continue to operate as a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics America, and its existing clients will continue to receive support even after the acquisition was concluded.

With higher 5G demand comes better customer support

Samsung already represents an important piece of the 5G puzzle in the United States. It’s one of the bigger 5G players in this market, and it supplies both Sprint and AT&T with 5G network equipment. But an even stronger foothold in the USA is required as mobile carriers increase their demands for developing and deploying 4G and 5G networks. Samsung believes that the acquisition of TWS will provide just that, and it will make it easier for both Samsung and TeleWorld Solutions to tackle the ongoing 5G network upgrade cycle happening in the United States.

Analysts predict that 2020 will be a decisive year for Samsung’s 5G network business, but the year has barely started and the company is already boasting about new acquisitions to improve its relationships with customers. Samsung is striking the iron while it’s hot, in a manner of speaking. The company is in a favorable position, partly because of Huawei’s misfortune, and it seems to want and capitalize on its advantages as early in the year as possible.

Next OnePlus flagship has a 120Hz Samsung display with HDR, 1000 nits

The next flagship phone in OnePlus’ portfolio will reportedly boast a 120Hz display, and the reason why we’re telling you about this is that Samsung Display is the screen supplier. Now, this is no official guarantee that Samsung’s own flagship phones set to launch throughout the year will have a 120Hz display. After all, there’s a bit of Samsung in nearly every smartphone on the market, regardless of which brand they carry. Nevertheless, this confirms that Samsung Display is capable of mass-producing 120Hz panels for its clients. Sooner or later, the technology will eventually make it into Samsung’s own smartphones, and the Galaxy S20 series is a prime contender to that.

The Galaxy S20 could be the first to adopt a 120Hz display

There have been clues to suggest that Samsung’s next flagship phone series will be equipped with a 120Hz screen. From the unveiling of the Exynos 990 SoC with 120Hz support to a secret 120Hz display mode found in the One UI 2.0 beta, there are reasons to believe that the Galaxy S20 lineup could give users the option to choose between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates.

The 120Hz panel acquired by OnePlus from Samsung Display supports HDR and is said to be capable of reaching peak brightness levels of 1000 nits. The panel can be switched to 60Hz mode if so desired.

Samsung’s own flagships for 2020 could boast similar display characteristics. HDR support and up to 1000 nits of brightness are already par for the course in the Galaxy series, but 120Hz would make animations much smoother and the UI should feel more responsive as a result. A 120Hz panel also helps mobile gamers (at least for games that support 120Hz mode) particularly in fast-paced titles that benefit from a higher framerate. We’ll just have to wait and see if the Galaxy S20 will have one.

Base Galaxy S20 model to have no less than 12GB of RAM, claims rumor

The cheapest Galaxy S20 variant will be equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM if we are to believe the latest rumor passed along by @UniverseIce on Twitter. This would make the series more consistent across the board, assuming that an option for 16GB of RAM won’t be made available for the Galaxy S20+ or S20 Ultra models.

The Galaxy S10e was released last year as the company’s most cost-conscious flagship variant, and prospective buyers had the option of picking between 6GB and 8GB of RAM. This year, however, Samsung seems to be abandoning the ‘e’ variant for its upcoming lineup and is expected to launch the standard Galaxy S20 as the base model for the flagship series. It, too, will have a minimum of 12GB of RAM, according to the source.

If this will indeed be the case then the entire Galaxy S20 lineup will likely share the same RAM configuration. That is unless Samsung will want to become the first OEM to equip a smartphone with 16GB of RAM and rush to the market to offer this choice to customers through the S20+ or Ultra models.

Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 teasers go live in India

India was one of the first markets to get both the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A70, but Samsung hasn’t been as keen on bringing their successors to the country, perhaps because the company also has its Galaxy M series of phones already crowding up its lineup in India. Indian pricing for the two handsets had leaked a week ago, but Samsung hasn’t said anything about when they will be available for purchase or even officially acknowledged they’re coming to the country, aside from putting up a couple of support pages.

That is changing today, as Samsung is now teasing the 2020 Galaxy A series on its official website. According to 91Mobiles, both the Galaxy A51 and A71 will launch in the country sometime this week, so it’s possible customers will be able to pick either device up before the Galaxy S10 Lite has gone on sale. As revealed by retailer Flipkart, the Galaxy S10 Lite will be available for purchase in India from January 23; a release date for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite has not been confirmed yet, but that will probably change within the next couple of days.

Report: No 25W charging for Samsung’s clamshell foldable phone

Will the Galaxy Fold 2, or the Galaxy Z Flip as Samsung’s clamshell foldable phone is now rumored to launch as, support the company’s new 25W super fast charging tech, or will it make do with the old 15W fast charging that everyone hopes would just be phased out completely? Well, according to a new report from the Korean media, it might be the latter.

The Elec has published a report that talks about the fast charging speeds that the devices Samsung is set to announce on February 11 will offer, and it claims that all Galaxy S20 models will have 25W charging while the foldable phone will support a maximum of 15W. Samsung’s own software, however, suggests otherwise. Android 10 firmware for the Galaxy Note 9 has references to “superfast” charging for a device codenamed “bloom”, so we’re inclined to think 25W charging will be supported on the company’s next foldable.

As usual, only time will tell what is fact and what is fiction. Thankfully, we’re less than a month away from the launch of Samsung’s newest Galaxy S flagship and foldable smartphone, so it won’t be long before we find out exactly how quickly the battery on the Galaxy Fold 2 will charge.

Galaxy Fold 2 now rumored to launch as Galaxy Z Flip

The rumor mill continues to throw a wrench in our efforts to get a clear picture of what we can expect from Samsung’s next foldable phone, which is set to go official alongside the Galaxy S20 on February 20. A few days ago, a report suggested that the foldable phone everyone had been calling the Galaxy Fold 2 all this time could launch as the Galaxy Bloom instead. Now, leakster Ice universe is suggesting that the device will launch as the Galaxy Z Flip.

Why would Samsung pick such a confusing name for its next foldable smartphone after going with something as simple as the Galaxy Fold for its first foldable? Well, that’s something the company will no doubt tell us when it announces the device, provided the latest rumor is correct and Galaxy Z Flip is indeed the final name. Even if it isn’t, we can strike out Galaxy Fold 2 from the list of possible names for Samsung’s clamshell foldable, primarily because it isn’t going to be a successor to the original Galaxy Fold.

Factors like its flip phone form factor and its rumored sub-$1000 price tag put Samsung’s upcoming foldable into a different category, so a unique name that doesn’t fit any existing lineup was always expected, although that doesn’t change the fact that something like Galaxy Z Flip will be quite the confusing moniker. But everything is only a rumor at this time, so there’s no telling what Samsung will actually end up calling its second mass market foldable smartphone.
