Samsung fights coronavirus in India with air purifiers, PPE, food, and more

Samsung’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic continues, and its efforts have now extended into India. A company representative cited by the local media confirmed that Samsung is to provide Personal Preventive Equipment (PPE) kits to hospitals across the country. Samsung will also provide infrared thermometers, public address systems, and air purifiers.

The PPE kits for hospital personnel include surgical face masks, gloves, medical gowns, eyewear, hood caps, and shoe covers. They are essential in combating the spread of coronavirus, not only in India but across the globe. The company managed to improve the production of surgical face masks in South Korea by establishing smart factories in collaboration with domestic manufacturers and had already donated over a quarter-million masks overseas.

Samsung is supporting communities with ready-to-eat meals

Samsung is also supporting local police by providing cooked food packets to communities around its manufacturing plants in India. Its smartphone factory in Noida was temporarily shut down last week in accordance with the local government’s policy. The company also urged its employees in different areas including sales, marketing, and R&D, to work from home.

Customer call centers and service centers in India have been temporarily shut down, and warranties on a variety of product categories – including smartphones, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, etc. – that were set to expire by April 30 have been extended to May 31. Meanwhile, Samsung hopes that its Service Vans will soon be back in action, covering the diverse terrain of India and reaching your doorstep. But seeing how the coronavirus pandemic is not yet under control, only time will tell when this might happen.

New coronavirus case confirmed at Samsung Austin Semiconductor plant

Another case of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was found among Samsung employees, this time on US soil, and specifically at the Samsung Austin Semiconductor facilities. The employee tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 on March 28 but has been out of office since March 13.

According to KXAN citing Samsung Austin Semiconductor spokeswoman, Michele Glaze, the company had implemented precautionary deep cleaning and sanitation on-site’ according to the local health authorities guidelines. She added that Samsung will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees.

Samsung’s production lines have not been affected

This is the second case of coronavirus found at one of Samsung’s semiconductor facilities. The first case was confirmed last week at the Giheung semiconductor factory in South Korea. However, the Austin Semiconductor facility is not a part of the company’s main silicon operations.

Its foundry business in Texas produces chips primarily for corporate customers in Austin. Roughly one year ago, some reports were hinting that Samsung may want to build a new chip plant in the USA to expand its operations. Samsung denied the rumors, and no news on the matter emerged since.

According to Michele Glaze, the production lines at Samsung’s Austin Semiconductor plant have not been affected by the recent coronavirus case. The factory remains operational.

Samsung India extends device warranties amidst coronavirus lockdown

Samsung India is following the example of a slew of Chinese manufacturers and extending device warranties for products from a wide range of categories, including smartphones, refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, and more, as the world’s largest democracy goes through a nationwide lockdown to control the spread of the coronavirus.

Those who own a Samsung product whose warranty is set to expire between March 20 and April 30 can now avail their warranties till May 31. That should be particularly useful for those who purchased one of the three Galaxy S10 models when they went on sale last year. Samsung has also extended the period for redeeming Galaxy S20 pre-order offers from March 31 to April 30, as the company isn’t taking or delivering orders during the lockdown.

India is currently in the middle of a 21-day nationwide lockdown that prohibits citizens from stepping out of their homes for all non-essential purposes, and Samsung and many other manufacturers have stopped taking orders and shuttered their support operations as a result. Whether or not Samsung will bring the warranty and Galaxy S20 pre-order redemption extensions to other countries is unclear at the moment, though we will be sure to let you know once we learn more on that front.

Android 10 update now rolling out to the Galaxy A10s

The Android 10 and One UI 2.0 rollout for Galaxy smartphones continues: Samsung has now released the update for the Galaxy A10s, one of its most affordable A series phones from last year and sibling to the company’s top-selling smartphone globally in Q3 2019. The update is rolling out in Malaysia and comes with software version A107FXXU5BTCB. Just how quickly the update will reach other markets is something we will have to wait and see.

Since the Galaxy A10s is a budget-grade device, we can expect it to get the bare essentials of One UI 2.0, though that’s not to say it won’t get some useful new functionality. You can expect all of the base functionality from Android 10 as well, including Google’s navigation gestures, improved privacy controls, and improved Digital Wellbeing with parental controls and Focus mode. The update also includes the March 2020 security patch.

Own a Galaxy A10s and live in Malaysia? You should be able to download Android 10 by opening the phone’s Settings app, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. You might have to do that a couple of times before the update shows up, and if it doesn’t, you can simply download the full Android 10 firmware from our archive and install it on your phone using a Windows computer.

Galaxy Note 8 getting April 2020 security patch in new update

The COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t seem to be having any effect on Samsung’s update game, as the company has continued to release important updates for many of its devices in the last few weeks. We saw the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 get One UI 2.1, many mid-rangers got the Android 10 update (and so did the $2000 Fold), and the April 2020 security patch is also making its way to a few devices.

Earlier this week, Samsung released the April security patch for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and it is now rolling out an update with the new security patch to the Galaxy Note 8. As is often the case, the update has been released in Germany, where it is available with firmware version N950FXXSADTC4. The update only includes security enhancements; as we had confirmed a few weeks ago, Android 10 is not coming to the Galaxy Note 8 or the Galaxy S8, though they will keep getting security updates for at least another couple of years.

The April security update for the Galaxy Note 8 will probably be released in more markets soon. Once it is available in your country, you will be able to download it over the air from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu by tapping Download and install. You can also find the latest firmware for the Galaxy Note 8 in our firmware archive if you wish to manually update your phone.

Galaxy Fold 5G starts receiving Android 10 update in the UK

The LTE variant of the Galaxy Fold started receiving the Android 10 update last week, but Galaxy Fold 5G users were missing out. Now, the South Korean smartphone giant has started rolling out Android 10 for the Galaxy Fold 5G in the UK.

The OTA (over the air) update with firmware version F907BXXU3BTC9 has a file size of 2354.59MB, and it brings One UI 2.1 to the Galaxy Fold 5G. The update also brings the March 2020 Android security patch to the foldable phone.

The One UI 2.1 update brings features like Quick Share, Music Share, and improved Night mode performance in the camera app to the Galaxy Fold 5G. Google’s UI navigation gestures, enhanced Dark Mode, new camera UI, tweaked icons and color scheme, refreshed Device Care design, improved permissions manager, and screen recording are a part of the update as well. We also expect the new software to bring bug fixes and performance improvements to the phone.

If you are using the Galaxy Fold 5G in the UK, you should have received the update notification by now. If not, you can check for the update manually by heading to Settings » Software update and tapping Download and install. You can also download the firmware file from our firmware section and flash the update manually.

Samsung’s Exynos 980 chipset ends up in one more Vivo phone

The Exynos 980 is Samsung’s first chipset with a completely integrated 5G modem, and it was first used in the Vivo X30. Now, the chipset has been used in one more Vivo smartphone, the Vivo S6 5G. It’s a mid-range phone Super AMOLED screen and 5G connectivity.

Vivo announced the S6 5G for the Chinese market earlier today. It features a 6.44-inch Super AMOLED screen with HDR10, a U-shaped notch for the selfie camera, and an under-display fingerprint reader. The phone runs Android 10-based Funtouch OS 10 and is equipped with the 8nm Exynos 980 processor, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, and 128GB/256GB UFS 2.1 storage.

The Vivo S6 5G has a quad-camera setup on the rear, consisting of a 48MP primary sensor (F1.8), an 8MP ultrawide camera (F2.25), a 2MP macro camera (F2.4), and a 2MP depth sensor. It supports 4K video recording. At the front, the phone has a 32MP selfie camera with an F2.0 aperture.

Other features of the phone include SA and NSA 5G connectivity, dual-SIM card slot, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Vivo S6 5G is powered by a 4500mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The phone is priced at CNY 2,698 (around $380) and comes in black, blue, and white colors. It will go on sale starting April 3.

Very few mid-range chipsets offer an integrated 5G modem with SA and NSA compatibility and support for sub-6GHz technology, and the Exynos 980 is among them. No wonder, the chipset is seeing attraction from other brands. Interestingly, no Samsung has yet been released with the Exynos 980 chipset, but we know that it will be used in the Galaxy A51 5G and the Galaxy A71 5G.
