Galaxy S10 Lite picks up One UI 2.1 update in India

A few months back, Samsung India had announced that it would be postponing the release of the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update for its smartphones and tablets because of the lockdown imposed in the country for battling the coronavirus. The One UI 2.1 update that Samsung has rolled out to multiple devices was also delayed in India as a result.

Two weeks back, Samsung India finally started releasing updates again, kicking things off with the Galaxy A50’s Android 10 update. Now, Samsung has also released One UI 2.1 in the country for at least one eligible device: Galaxy S10 Lite owners in India can now download the One UI 2.1 update and start enjoying a host of new software features.

All of these features debuted on the Galaxy S20 series and include Quick Share, Music Share, a basic Pro video mode and a number of other new camera functionality, such as Single Take, My Filters, and nighttime Hyperlapse recording. Unfortunately, the security patch included in the update is from the month of April, as the firmware version rolling out in India (G770FXXU2BTD2) is the same one that was released for the Galaxy S10 Lite in other countries a couple of months ago.

The update also doesn’t seem to be available over the air at this time, but that should change in the next couple of days. However, if you own a Galaxy S10 Lite and don’t want to wait, you can download the update via Samsung’s Smart Switch software for Windows or Mac. The One UI 2.1 firmware is also available for download in our archive for manual installation using a Windows PC.

Samsung and LG drop complaints against each other over QLED TV marketing

The two largest TV brands in the world, Samsung and LG, were fighting over the former’s QLED marketing claims. However, both companies have dropped complaints against each other in the South Korean market. The FTC (Fair Trade Commission) has decided not to further the process after the brands withdrew their charges.

In September 2019, LG had filed a complaint against Samsung Electronics for a “misleading advertisement” regarding its QLED TVs. LG said that Samsung’s QLED TVs are merely LCD TVs with a backlight that has an additional Quantum Dot panel, not a “true QLED” display that uses quantum-dot light-emitting diodes. One month later, Samsung filed a complaint against saying that LG needs to stop negative campaigning without clear proof.

Samsung uses the QLED marketing term for its mid-range and high-end TVs that use quantum dot technology to improve brightness, color volume, and contrast ratio. Even other brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi that use Samsung’s QLED display panels in their TVs have come up with their own marketing terms.

LG uses OLED panels in its high-end TVs that use true self-emitting pixels for deeper blacks and infinite contrast ratio. However, OLED TVs are susceptible to burn-in damages when images are retained for a long time on the screen. The company also sells its own version of QLED TVs with the ‘Nanocell TV’ branding.

More renders of BTS Edition Galaxy Buds+ leak

It was revealed two days ago that Samsung will launch a special edition of the Galaxy S20+ in partnership with Korean music band BTS. The company also has plans to sell the BTS Edition of the Galaxy Buds+ in purple. Now, clearer renders of the purple Galaxy Buds+ have been leaked on the internet by Evan Blass.

The BTS Edition Galaxy Buds+ will come in a black box with seven purple-colored heart-shaped icons to depict seven members of the music band. There’s also a Samsung | BTS co-branding logo on the box. The company hasn’t revealed the price of the BTS Edition Galaxy Buds+ yet, but there’s a possibility of the limited-edition earphones costing more than the regular version.

The earbuds themselves have the purple finish on the touch-sensitive area, while the rest of the body remains in black. The case has BTS’ signature purple color on the outside, while the insides are colored in black. There’s a purple-colored BTS logo on one earbud and a heart-shaped icon on the other. Similar logos can also be found on the front of the case.

The Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition will be launched on July 9. Interested customers can pre-order the special edition phone from June 19 until July 5. It will go on sale in South Korea and some other countries, and Samsung has partnered with French books and electronics store Fnac for this launch. Samsung had also launched a Thom Browne version of the Galaxy Z Flip.

You can now buy Galaxy S20 5G UW from Verizon in the US

Verizon’s Galaxy S20 5G UW is finally available for purchase in the US. This is a special variant of the Galaxy S20, and it features support for mmWave 5G, hence the ‘UW’ branding in its name. This phone can be purchased for the same $999 price as that of other carrier-specific versions of the Galaxy S20 5G. You can either pick it up from one of Verizon’s stores or order a free, 2-day doorstep delivery.

Verizon is selling the Galaxy S20 5G UW in three colors: Cloud Pink, Cloud White, and Cosmic Grey. The Cloud White colorway is currently exclusive to Verizon’s network. The carrier is also offering a $150 discount in the form of bill credits if you purchase the smartphone using the carrier’s 24-month installment plan ($35.41/month). The phone comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

If you buy the phone today, you’ll get a firmware update as soon as you take the new phone out of the box. The new firmware comes with software version G981VSQU1ATEA and the June 2020 security patch. Samsung is also selling the phone through its own online store, where it is offering several financing options and a buy-back guarantee program.

You can also buy the Galaxy S20 5G UW through Best Buy, which started taking pre-orders for the phone last week. The retailer is selling the phone for $999 as well, but you can get a $100 discount if you activate the phone on day one. There’s also a $29.16/month plan for a two-year contract.

You can now get the Galaxy A51 from Verizon for free on a 2-year plan

The Galaxy A51 is Samsung’s most successful smartphone of the year so far, to the point where you might be owning one already. But if you don’t and you’re looking to buy a Galaxy A51 in the USA, Verizon has a pretty good deal wherein you can acquire the phone for $0.00 per month on a 24-month installment plan.

Verizon initially launched the Galaxy A51 for $16.66 a month on a 2-year agreement. The carrier later dropped the price to $10 a month, and now it lowered the monthly fee even further to $0. Unannounced Exynos M6 core gets detailed by ex-Austin engineers

Samsung was developing two more Exynos custom cores before the company shut down its custom CPU development arm. SamMobile reported on the unannounced M6 and M7 cores a couple of months ago, and now it turns out that Samsung had the M6 custom core fairly deep in development when it pulled the plug on its operations in Austin.

In a paper called Evolution of the Samsung Exynos CPU Microarchitecture written by numerous ex-Samsung Austin engineers, a few key specifications of the M6 custom core were revealed. The M6 sounds like it could’ve been a powerful beast, at least on paper, no pun intended. But it needs to be stressed that there’s no guarantee for the M6 to still be on track for a commercial release.

Custom M6 core: 5nm and large cache

Samsung’s M6 custom silicon was supposed be built on a 5nm process node. The CPU core had a frequency of 2.8GHz, same as the existing M5 core beating at the heart of the Exynos 990. However, the M6 had 128KB L1 cache, 2MB L2 cache shared between 2 cores, and 4MB L3 cache.

Interestingly enough, the paper also mentions that  Samsung’s goal throughout the existence of the Exynos custom cores was to improve performance across all types of workloads, as seen in one of the images below. According to the source material, the average IPC (instructions per cycle) of the M1 custom core is 1.06, while the M6 has an average IPC of 2.71.

Even though these specs are promising, we may never know the true potential of the M6 custom core in the real world. Samsung might pull a rabbit out of the hat and release the M6 core next year as the last big thing to come out of its Austin R&D Center, or the company may have already shelved this project.
