Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G battery supplier hasn’t changed

Samsung Electronics is reportedly equipping both the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G with batteries supplied by the same manufacturer as before, namely Samsung SDI. This might not be surprising news, however, there was a possibility that Samsung would switch to another supplier, especially since the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20 series rely on batteries supplied by LG Chem.

According to a report from The Elec citing anonymous industry sources, Samsung Electronics has decided to stick with Samsung SDI for the production of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Z Flip 5G batteries because of cost concerns. Both sequels are expected to have virtually the same batteries as the original models, which means that Samsung SDI can use its existing molds and production lines without having to increase production costs. In contrast, partnering with a different supplier such as LG Chem would have resulted in higher investments from Samsung Electronics.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be powered by two batteries with a combined capacity of 4,365mAh. Each battery resides in one half of the phone. One unit has a capacity of 2,135mAh and the other is rated at 2,245mAh. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G should have a 2,500mAh unit in one half and a 704mAh battery in the other for a combined capacity of ~3,200mAh.

Samsung might start selling small appliances if it acquires Philips’ arm

Samsung Electronics might soon start selling you small kitchen appliances such as coffee makers and toasters, according to industry watchers who believe that the Korean tech giant might be acquiring Philips’ domestic appliance business.

Samsung hasn’t revealed any official plans on the matter, however, Dutch conglomerate Philips already confirmed that it’s looking to sell its domestic appliance business over the next year. Some market insiders now speculate that Samsung Electronics is looking to acquire Philips’ appliance arm, but others remain skeptical.

Samsung is not the only company on Philips’ radar

Sources cited by Pulse claim that Samsung is not the only Korean giant who might have an interest in buying Philips’ domestic appliance business. Samsung’s neighboring competitor LG Electronics is reportedly doing the same. However, other market watchers are skeptical about this potential buyout because it would require massive investments from either company.

Philips’ domestic appliance business has factories in a few countries including Austria, Brazil, and China. It also owns R&D centers in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Italy, all the while employing roughly 4,700 workers worldwide.

Samsung is already selling large kitchen appliances – including refrigerators and ovens – but it has no market share in the small domestic appliance segment. Acquiring Philips’ arm would open up new opportunities of expansion, but it’s unclear whether the Philips brand would remain intact as a Samsung subsidiary or if the Korean tech giant would start selling small appliances under its own brand.

However, even though a buyout would make sense given Samsung’s existing foothold in the domestic appliance market, this is not a decision that’s going to be taken lightly. An acquisition deal with Philips would likely cost billions of dollars and investment banking sources cited by the Korean media believe that it might represent a high risk for Samsung, and indeed, LG. Philips wants to sell its domestic appliance arm by mid-2021.

Samsung launches The Sero rotating TV in the Netherlands

Samsung is bringing the Sero, its massive smartphone-shaped smart TV, to the Netherlands this fall, the company announced Tuesday. The Sero will be available for purchase in the country as of September 7th, priced at €1,699, which amounts to about $1,950, VAT included.

Needless to say, that’s quite a steep price tag for a TV, even a 43-inch 4K QLED one capable of rotating around its axis, but perhaps its unique form factor ends up outperforming expectations. What should be immediately obvious is that the Sero is a TV Samsung designed specifically for long-time users of its Galaxy smartphones, with screen mirroring obviously being among its main allures.

Smart Hub on wheels that knows your smartphone inside and out

The stand that comes as part of the package is actually on wheels, making this TV portable enough to double as an advertising display in shops – not that using it as such would be a particularly clever idea. The Sero has already been available in France as of last month, having previously also launched in the United States and United Kingdom.

Samsung will likely follow up on its Dutch release by expanding the Sero’s availability to some more European countries. In the meantime, we can all reminisce how it originally announced this curious-looking TV as something meant to appeal to Millennials. By today, it seems to have dropped that notion and is instead marketing the Sero as a curiosity than anyone can enjoy.

Samsung’s ‘Life Unstoppable’ event brings new products on September 2

Samsung has a lot of new products to show off in the coming weeks. It already has an event scheduled for August 5 where we’ll get to see the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The company today announced another event that will take place in the first week of September.

‘Life Unstoppable’ will be the theme that this event follows. Much like Samsung’s August 5 event, this will also be an entirely virtual affair. It’s described as a 45 minute “virtual and dynamic journey” of Samsung’s newest products.

Life Unstoppable is Samsung’s IFA 2020 replacement

Samsung is conducting its own event this year instead of attending IFA in Berlin. It has been a regular exhibitor at Europe’s biggest trade show since 1991. However, due to the pandemic, Samsung has decided to skip IFA 2020 which takes place from September 4-9.

The company will showcase its new mobile and wearable products that it will unveil in August at the event. Samsung only tends to announce new TV, audio and home appliance products at IFA and that’s what it will do in this virtual event. It does throw in a new mobile product some times, the Galaxy A90 5G was unveiled at IFA last year, but flagship announcements are no longer made there.

“We are excited to reinvent the way we will unveil our new line-up of mobile phones, wearables, TVs, home appliances and more – a journey that will showcase how our connected, breakthrough technology fuels a Life Unstoppable,” said Benjamin Braun, the Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Europe.

The event will be a unique digital interactive experience, enabling viewers to virtually explore the new product launches from the comfort of their home. Samsung’s Life Unstoppable event is going to take place on September 2 from 10 am CET.

Galaxy M31s confirmed to feature Exynos 9611 processor

The Galaxy M31s will be unveiled later this month and go on sale sometime in August. Ahead of the official announcement, Samsung teased some features of the upcoming mid-range smartphone, including an Infinity-O display, a 64MP quad-camera setup, and a 6,000mAh battery. Now, the phone’s processor has been confirmed via its Google Play Console listing.

Going by the information revealed via the Galaxy M31s’ Google Play Console listing, the smartphone will be equipped with the 10nm Exynos 9611 processor, 6GB RAM, and Android 10. It also reveals the phone’s screen resolution: 2400 x 1080 pixels. Given that there’s no rear-facing fingerprint reader on the phone, it could come with an in-display optical fingerprint reader.

The Galaxy M31s is expected to be priced around the INR 20,000 (around $267) mark. It will feature a Super AMOLED screen with a center-aligned punch-hole cutout for the 32MP selfie camera. It has a quad-camera setup at the rear, consisting of a 64MP wide-angle camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP macro camera. It is also the first Galaxy M series device to feature the Single Take camera mode.

We had exclusively revealed two months ago that the smartphone will come with 128GB internal storage. However, there could also be a variant with 64GB internal storage, given its mid-range positioning. The phone has a 6,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging and reverse charging. Other features could include dual-SIM card slot, microSD card slot, LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, and a headphone jack.

Samsung, Hyundai discuss deeper cooperation in mobility business

Two months ago, Samsung’s Lee Jae-Yong and Hyundai’s Chung Euisun met to discuss a possible collaboration in the electric vehicles segment. Soon, it was revealed that Samsung will provide batteries for Hyundai’s electric vehicles and Exynos chipsets for the South Korean firm’s connected cars. Today, the two leaders met once again to discuss a deeper collaboration in the mobility segment.

Reports coming out of South Korea confirm that Lee Jae-Yong and Hyundai’s Chung Euisun had their second meeting this year. The meeting took place at Hyundai’s and Kia’s research and development center in Namyang, Gyeonggi Province in South Korea. The facility, where over 14,000 employees work, is Hyundai’s hub for future mobility technologies. Lee was accompanied by other top executives at Samsung: Hwang Sung-Woo (President of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology), Jun Young-Hyun (CEO of Samsung SDI), Kang In-Yup (President of System LSI), and Kim Ki-Nam (Vice Chairman of Samsung Semiconductors).

During the meeting, Samsung’s executives were briefed on Hyundai’s future products and technologies in the mobility and robotics space. Lee and other executives test drove Hyundai’s autonomous car and a hydrogen EV. Following this meeting, speculations became rife regarding Samsung’s bigger plans in the automotive segment. The South Korean firm had acquired Harman International in 2016 to enter the connected car market.

A Samsung official said, “Including the Harman acquisition, Lee has been making efforts to strengthen Samsung’s automotive parts business, which has a portfolio ranging from automotive semiconductors, image sensors, displays to audio systems.”

The company has plans to equip its connected car solutions with AI capabilities (like Bixby), ultra-high-resolution camera sensors, Exynos chipsets, and 5G/6G connectivity. Hyundai is planning to sell a million EVs by 2025, and if Samsung gets orders to supply parts for those cars, it would be a great win for the company.

Samsung Galaxy M01 vs. Galaxy M01s specs comparison

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M01s last week in India with entry-level features and specifications. It is a revised version of the Galaxy M01, which debuted in the Indian market just last month, alongside the Galaxy M11. While the Galaxy M01s comes with an extremely affordable price tag, has a bigger display, and a faster processor, it is a downgrade in terms of software.

The Galaxy M01s sports a larger, 6.2-inch screen compared to the Galaxy M01’s 5.7-inch screen, but it is still an LCD display and its resolution stays at HD+. You’re getting a larger display, but not necessarily a higher quality one. In terms of processing power, the Galaxy M01 uses a Snapdragon 439 processor, while the Galaxy M01s uses the Helio P22 SoC. While both chipsets are made using a 12nm process, the Helio P22 has a slightly higher CPU clock speed.

The Galaxy M01s runs a two-year-old operating system, Android 9, out of the box. It’s a shame, really, as Google is ready to release Android 11 within the next few weeks. Samsung should’ve released the smartphone with Android 10 and One UI 2.0/2.1 as it did with the cheaper-priced Galaxy M01.

Both smartphones feature a 13MP+2MP dual-camera setup at the rear, but the Galax M01s gets an 8MP selfie camera compared to the Galaxy M01’s 5MP selfie camera. The Galaxy M01s also gets a fingerprint reader, something that was sorely missing from the Galaxy M01. Other features such as dual SIM card slots, LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB port, and a headphone jack remain the same on both phones.
