Alleged Galaxy Z Flip 2 battery details get revealed by regulatory agencies

Along with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung is also expected to develop and release a new clamshell foldable phone before the end of the year. Whether it will be called the Galaxy Z Flip 2 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3 remains to be seen, but regardless of its final moniker, the upcoming foldable will apparently have roughly the same battery configuration as the ongoing model.

The Galaxy Z Flip 2’s battery characteristics have seemingly been revealed through a few applications that were recently published by three regulatory agencies: Safety Korea, 3C, and DEKRA. They all reveal that the upcoming clamshell foldable will have a similar dual-battery system as the original Galaxy Z Flip.

The dual-battery system comprises a main unit with a rated capacity of 2,300mAh and a typical capacity of 2,370mAh. It’s paired with a smaller, secondary battery with a rated capacity of 903mAh.

Assuming that Samsung won’t make significant design changes on the inside of the clamshell foldable phone, the smaller battery should reside in the upper half of the device, whereas the larger unit should fit inside the lower half. They’ll have a combined capacity of around 3,300mAh, which is about the same as what you’ll get from the original Galaxy Z Flip.

The Galaxy Z Flip 2 hasn’t been in the headlines as much as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 but the industry expects the upcoming model to feature a few upgraded components such as a newer SoC and possibly a 120Hz display.

Samsung’s raise offer rejected, unions want more guarantees

The biggest raises in over a decade weren’t enough to convince major unions to get on board with Samsung’s employee compensation packages for the newly started fiscal year. At least as far as its own backyard is concerned. According to new reports out of the Far East, representatives of some 3,000 employees rejected last week’s offer.

Instead, they’re pushing for guaranteed double-digit increase in wages. For context, the previous offer was in the 7.5-12% range, with the last third being tied to performance bonuses.

Times are changing

This development signals a significant shift in the South Korean market power dynamics. Samsung Electronics’ nadir was less than a year and a half ago, when its former board chairman Chairman Lee Sang-hoon was jailed for union busting. Though he’d have been eligible for an early release by now anyway, he was also acquitted by last August. The Supreme Court confirmed that decision this February.

The empowered unions now number hundreds of members in their ranks and are only expected to continue growing moving forward. Four of them are involved in the ongoing negotiations with Samsung. As for the present stalemate, the unions are arguing weak wage increases over the past three years are the number one reason why they’re not content with the offer that’s presently on the table.

Where things go from here is difficult to anticipate. Both sides are already insinuating that the other might not be acting in good faith, but neither seem willing to involve the courts at this stage.

Samsung’s new 5G radio tech improves efficiency in mid-band spectrum

Samsung has announced that its new 5G wideband radio technology expands the bandwidth and helps carriers deploy cost-effective and flexible 5G networks. This new technology extends the bandwidth support of its 5G radios to 400MHz (double the 200MHz bandwidth of current radios).

With the increased bandwidth, cellular operators can utilize their existing mid-band spectrum to the maximum while using less hardware. Mobile operators would require fewer radios to manage their existing network while improving the data capacity. The new technology also helps in scenarios where an operator owns non-contiguous frequencies in the mid-band 5G spectrum or when the spectrum is shared with other operators.

Mid-band 5G technologies offer a balanced approach with low latency, high speeds, and wider coverage, and Samsung Networks’ new radio technology can help operators in improving the rollout of 5G networks in the mid-band spectrum. The company’s Massive MIMO radios will be available early next year, offering operators a more profitable setup.

Galaxy A52 with 120Hz refresh rate may soon be launching in India

Samsung has launched two variants of the Galaxy A52. There’s the LTE variant that has a 90Hz refresh rate display and the Galaxy A52 5G. The latter has a higher 120Hz refresh rate since it comes with a more capable chipset.

The 5G variant has only been released in limited markets so far. Samsung fans in India who have been waiting for the device might be in luck. It appears that the Galaxy A52 with 120Hz refresh rate may soon be launched in their country.

The Galaxy A52 5G bearing model number SM-A526B/DS has been spotted on the BIS or Bureau of Indian Standards website. Normally when a device appears on the BIS website it’s considered an indication of its impending launch.

Exactly when Samsung might launch this variant of its latest mid-range smartphone remains unknown. New devices normally hit the market a couple of weeks after their initial appear at the BIS.

The 5G variant of the Galaxy A52 has the same 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display as its LTE sibling but it supports a higher 120Hz refresh rate. This makes it a unique device in its own right. Under the hood, you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chipset.

It shares most other specs with the LTE variant. This includes the camera setup which includes a 64-megapixel main sensor with OIS, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, 5-megapixel depth and 5-megapixel macro camera.

There’s also the same 4,500mAh battery that has support for 25W fast charging. Samsung does ship a charger with the Galaxy A52 but it only provides 15W fast charging. The LTE Galaxy A52 is already on sale in India. Prices start at ₹26499 (~$360).

Samsung is going to the White House to discuss the global chip shortage

A global chip shortage has upended supply chains across various industries. It’s one of the reasons why Samsung won’t be releasing a Galaxy Note 21 this year. Chipmakers continue to do their best in order to get things back on track.

It’s easier said than done, though. The White House has taken notice of the issue amid its review of supply chains critical to the country’s manufacturing industry. It has scheduled a meeting with some of the biggest stakeholders in the industry to discuss the global chip shortage. Samsung will be in attendance as well.

Samsung is investing heavily to ramp up production

Reuters reports that the meeting will be held on April 12 and it will include both chipmakers and car manufacturers. Auto production has slowed down across the globe due to the chip shortage.

It’s a matter of concern for the current US administration. Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed its attendance but it has been named as one of the participants in multiple reports. Other participants include GlobalFoundries and General Motors.

The Biden administration wants chipmakers to build new production facilities in the United States. It’s offering them incentives for this very reason. Samsung is already investing heavily in ramping up its chip production. It’s also in the preliminary stages of setting up a new $17 billion chip plant in Austin, Texas.

With such a massive investment slated for a US state, it goes without saying that Samsung would obviously have a seat at the table in any deliberations at the White House concerning the global chip shortage.

Samsung made an entire TV show based on Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is among the best smartphone cameras right now, and if you haven’t heard about it enough already, Samsung is trying another way to let you know about it. The company has created a whole TV series about the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera, and it will debut later this month on Hulu.

Samsung announced earlier today that it has created a branded series called Exposure, and it will go live on April 26 on Hulu. The show will feature up-and-coming photographers who will compete in various challenges to become “America’s best mobile photographer.” As expected, all the competing photographers will exclusively use the Galaxy S21 Ultra to shoot images and videos.

Usually, branded partnerships for movies and TV series show a particular gadget for a few seconds, but this is probably the first time an entire series centered on just one device. Samsung is not being coy about its sponsored content series which means that the company is extremely confident about its flagship smartphone’s camera capabilities.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra features a quad-camera setup at the rear, featuring a 108MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 10MP telephoto camera with 10x optical zoom. Its primary and telephoto cameras are optically stabilized. At the front, it has a 40MP selfie camera with autofocus. The phone can record 4K 60fps videos from all its cameras and 8K 24fps videos from its 108MP camera.

The phone also features the Director’s View mode which simultaneously shows video streams from all the cameras on the phone. Samsung also introduced the ability to capture portrait images in low-light conditions with this phone.

Galaxy SmartTag+ with UWB goes on pre-order in the US

Samsung had unveiled two new object trackers—Galaxy SmartTag and Galaxy SmartTag+—earlier this year alongside the Galaxy S21 series. While the Galaxy SmartTag went on sale almost immediately, Samsung had announced that the Galaxy SmartTag+ would go on sale later this year. It appears that the more premium object tracker from the company will soon be available for purchase.

The Galaxy SmartTag+ is now available for pre-order in the US. Best Buy has started accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy SmartTag+, and has mentioned that the device will start shipping on April 12. The device is priced at $39.99 in the US and will be available in two colors: Black and Denim Blue. According to reports, the Galaxy SmartTag+ received the FCC certification earlier today.

The Galaxy SmartTag+ is $15 costlier than the regular Galaxy SmartTag, but it comes with UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) that offers more precise location and direction information. It features Bluetooth 5.0 and a tracking range of close to 400 feet. When it is out of range, the Galaxy SmartTag+ can still be tracked via other Galaxy users’ devices using the Galaxy Find network. It has an IP53 rating for dust and water resistance and a ringer. Its replaceable battery lasts up to 5 months.

Samsung has a few other neat options for the Galaxy SmartTag+ in the SmartThings app. You can see the object tracker’s location in the AR (Augmented Reality) mode, configure its button for smart home controls or routines, adjust the ringer’s volume, and change the ringtone (8 presets available).
