Samsung unveils Galaxy Buds Pro Adidas Originals Special Pack

Samsung has unveiled a new version of the Galaxy Buds Pro in collaboration with Adidas. The Galaxy Buds Pro Adidas Originals Special Pack, which will be sold in South Korea later this week, was created to showcase the brand’s eco-friendly efforts. The special version of Galaxy Buds Pro comes in the classic white and green color combination associated with Adidas Originals.

The Galaxy Buds Pro Adidas Originals Special Pack is priced at KRW 279,000 (around $249), and it will be sold on Samsung’s website and Kakao. The special edition truly wireless earbuds will be available in South Korea starting April 7 at 7:30 PM. The package consists of the Galaxy Buds Pro, an Adidas Originals snapback case, and a special coupon to purchase the Adidas Stan Smith sneakers.

When paired with a Galaxy smartphone, the special edition Galaxy Buds Pro will enable a custom Adidas Originals theme. It applies a custom lock screen, icons, call screen, and messages screen on the connected Galaxy smartphone. A quick-access icon to Adidas’ official online store will also be added to the smartphone. The snapback case is made using recycled plastic. The Galaxy Buds Pro use 20% environmentally conscious Post-Consumer Materials (PCM) to cut down on waste.

A Samsung Electronics officials said, “We are planning this special pack for consumers seeking value consumption, especially MZ generations who are interested in sustainable products and fashions, and we will continue to strengthen Galaxy’s unique eco-friendly ecosystem through meaningful collaboration with various brands in the future.”

Samsung reportedly co-developed 5nm processor for Google Pixel 6

It was rumored last year that Google could dump Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors in favor of its in-house smartphone chips. The internet advertising giant has reportedly partnered with Samsung to make a high-end processor for Pixel smartphones. The first signs of the upcoming processor have now started appearing, and it looks like we might see it inside the Pixel 6.

According to a report from 9To5Google, the Pixel 6 will come equipped with Google’s GS101 processor (codenamed ‘Whitechapel’). The chipset has reportedly been co-developed with Samsung Semiconductor’s SLSI division, and it is built using the South Korean firm’s 5nm LPE fabrication process. The report claims that references to Exynos were found in connection with Google’s GS101 Whitechapel processor.

A separate report from XDA Developers claims that Google’s first mobile processor features a tri-cluster CPU, a TPU (Tensor Processing Unit), and an integrated security chip codenamed ‘Dauntless’ (like the Titan M). Going by previous reports, the processor features two Cortex-A78 CPU cores, two Cortex-A76 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores. It could also use an off-the-shelf 20-core ARM Mali GPU.

The report also claims that Google’s processor has some commonalities with Samsung’s Exynos processor, including software components. However, Google may have removed Samsung’s default ISP and NPU components in favor of its own designs. The Pixel 6 series is codenamed ‘Slider’, and it has two devices: ‘Raven’ and ‘Oriole’. The two codenames probably refer to the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 XL and could go official sometime in Q3 2021.

With the new processor, Google could have complete control over its smartphones and software updates, similar to Apple. It could probably offer higher performance, deeper integration, better camera quality, and long-term software update support. Google and Samsung could be working on more chipsets for Chromebooks and other smart home devices.

The Galaxy S21 series continues outselling its predecessor in the USA

The Galaxy S21 series continues to outperform the Galaxy S20 lineup in the USA, with a new report from Counterpoint Research revealing that the latest flagship has outsold its predecessor two-to-one in the first six weeks on the market. These results are in line with a previous report published by Strategy Analytics a couple of weeks ago, which revealed that Galaxy S21 sales in the USA were three times higher in the first four weeks of availability.

One of the main driving forces behind the Galaxy S21 series’ success was the relatively low price of the base model. It was released in the USA for $799. Attractive carrier deals and trade-in offers have boosted sales even further, claims the research firm.

Customers liked the new camera design and overlooked the plastic back

The new camera housing design that debuted with the Galaxy S21 series is seemingly a hit among smartphone enthusiasts in the USA. According to the research firm, it was one of the few reasons why customers have gravitated more towards the 2021 flagship series.

The base model’s plastic back panel also seems to have won over some fans, with carrier representatives claiming that some people actually preferred the plastic back as it offers a better grip. Meanwhile, the lack of a wall charger was a mild annoyance to some consumers but not a deal breaker.

The research firm expects Galaxy S21 sales to have declined in March and continue to do so in April. At the same time, budget-conscious models from the Galaxy A series are likely to contribute to lower Galaxy S21 sales in the following months.

Samsung doubles down on solar in pursuit of eco-friendly tech

Samsung is doubling down on solar energy as it continues to embrace eco-friendly technologies across the board. One of its most recent pushes toward more sustainable practices involved integrating solar panels at its semiconductor factories in South Korea.

The initiative encompassed all chipmaking facilities Samsung currently operates in its home country: those in  Pyeongtaek, Asan, Yongin, and Hwaseong. It stemmed from a 2018 promise Samsung made in response to rising climate change concerns, pledging to fully transition to renewable energy sources come 2021.

Being 100% green is only the beginning

That goal was almost reached a full year ahead of schedule, with Samsung’s 2019 report stating 92% of its energy sources were renewable. Earlier this week, the company confirmed it is now 100% green.

That doesn’t mean Samsung’s involvement in global climate change mitigation efforts is over. In more than one way, this fight is just beginning, according to pretty much every scientific prognosis going back half a century.

In a prepared statement, a company representative said Samsung intends to continue its investments in energy efficiency from both an operational perspective and the standpoint of research and development. This assessment is in line with what we’ve recently heard from other tech giants like Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.

Looking at the medium term, it’s becoming more likely that consumer electronics will prioritize energy efficiency above most other aspects of performance. Of course, that’s not solely due to the tech giants’ benevolence, but also the fact that Moore’s Law is 56 years old and happens to be at its deathbed.

The Galaxy S10 Lite has joined the April 2021 security update party

The April 2021 security patch saga continues as the Galaxy S10 Lite (SM-G770F) has joined the rest of the S10 family after a recent firmware update. It’s rolling out in Spain and possibly other European countries, and Galaxy S10 Lite owners can identify it by firmware version G770FXXS4EUC1.

The new firmware arrives less than a month after the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update landed on the Galaxy S10 Lite, and it’s obviously not as feature-packed as the previous release. The One UI 3.1 update was accompanied by the March 2021 security patch. For security reasons, the latest April patch has yet to be detailed by Samsung but it should be unveiled in the coming days.

As usual, the OTA release should be accompanied by an update notification which you can tap to trigger the update. You can also check if the update is available for the Galaxy S10 Lite in your region by opening the Settings app, navigating to Software update, and tapping Download and install.

Alternatively, SamMobile readers can skip the OTA process by downloading the new firmware from our archive and installing it manually using a Windows PC. Make sure that you download the right firmware for your model number and region.
