April 2021 security update reaches Galaxy Z Flip with some delay

The April 2021 Android security update is now rolling out to select variants of the Galaxy Z Flip. Identified by PDA version number F700FXXS4DUD, this release landed a bit later than we expected it to, given how we’re already halfway through April and the Galaxy Z Flip is still one of Samsung’s most recent flagships.

But then again, that just goes to show how much Samsung has spoiled us when it comes to receiving regular security patches across every price range. Even before it committed to delivering three generations’ worth of Android OS upgrades to all of its modern smartphones.

What about the Galaxy Z Flip 5G?

And what it’s worth, it would appear the Galaxy Z Flip 5G started moving to this month’s security update early last week, but only in Germany and China (which gets its own firmware, so it’s not a relevant indicator for other countries). Perhaps with the original flexible-display clamshell now joining the fold, this rollout can finally get going. If you happen to own the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the firmware upgrade to be on the lookout for carries the designation F707BXXS3DUC4.

Between the recent price cuts and given how both devices still have years of guaranteed software support from Samsung, this might just be the ideal time to get in on the foldable bandwagon. And as for the security update(s) at hand, you can try speeding up this month’s wait by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Alternatively, our firmware archive is always there for any Galaxy Z Flip (5G) owner eager enough manually to flash the full system images containing the April 1st, 2021 patch to their device.

This is your first look at the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite

Samsung is expected to unveil its Galaxy Book laptops later this month and the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite in June 2021. However, three months ahead of the tentative launch date, the upcoming tablet’s first press render has emerged, showing us its design and a few features.

Notable leakster Evan Blass published the first clear and high-resolution image of the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite 5G on Voice. The image shows the tablet’s rumored 12.4-inch LCD display on the front, a dual-camera setup and the magnetically attached S Pen at the rear, two stereo speakers (tuned by AKG) on either side of the tablet, and the power and volume buttons on the top. The upcoming tablet appears to feature a metal body, but we are still unsure if the tablet features a fingerprint reader.

Galaxy Tab S7 Lite rumored specs

Previously leaked reports claim that the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite will come equipped with the Snapdragon 750G processor, 4GB/6GB RAM, and 128GB internal storage. It may or may not use a high-refresh-rate LTPO display. The tablet will come with Android 11 (most probably with One UI 3.1) out of the box, and we can expect the tablet to get at least two major Android OS updates. The tablet will be available in Wi-Fi-only, LTE, and 5G variants. Other expected features include GPS, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C port, and a 7,000mAh (or bigger) battery with 15W fast charging.

The Galaxy Tab S7 Lite will be launched alongside the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite in four colors: black, green (could be light green), pink, and silver. Both tablets will address the booming e-learning market, which has seen a meteoric rise since the COVID-19 was declared a pandemic last year.

Your Galaxy Watch 4 is going to have a Chinese battery

Samsung is due to launch new smartwatches this year. The Galaxy Watch 4 is expected to be one of them. Several reports have revealed bits and pieces of information about the new wearable devices.

The latest report provides information about the batteries that Samsung will use. It’s claimed that Samsung will be sourcing batteries for the Galaxy Watch 4 from China.

ATL’s batteries made the Galaxy Note 7 go boom

The report claims that Samsung will source batteries for the Galaxy Watch 4 from China’s Amperex Technology Limited. Both ATL and Samsung SDI will be supplying batteries for the new wearable devices. Samsung had stopped sourcing batteries from ATL previously due to the Galaxy Note 7’s battery fire issues.

ATL has only recently been brought back into Samsung’s supply chain. Its batteries are used in the Galaxy S21 series. ATL is now reportedly mass producing small polymer 240mAh batteries for the Galaxy Watch 4’s 41mm model. The 45mm model will feature Samsung SDI’s 350mAh battery.

Samsung’s decision to use batteries from ATL might be a move to reduce costs. The company has recently been relying more on Chinese components in order to improve margins on its devices. It’s even sourcing OLED panels from China now.

The Galaxy Watch 4 might be quite different compared to its predecessors. That’s because Samsung has reportedly decided to ditch Tizen in favor of Wear OS. If those rumors turn out to be true, this will be Samsung’s first Android-powered smartwatch in quite a long time.

Samsung TV Plus launched for Galaxy smartphones, tablets in Korea

After launching Samsung TV Plus in India earlier this month, the company has announced that it has launched the Samsung TV Plus app for Galaxy smartphones and tablets in South Korea. Galaxy users in Samsung’s home country would now be able to stream the same content on their mobile devices as they could on their Tizen-powered smart TVs.

The Samsung TV Plus app for smartphones and tablets allows users to stream content wherever they are. The app has three tabs: Live, Discover, and My TV Plus. The Live tab shows the complete list of channels along with EPG (Electronic Program Guide) and the currently-playing channel. The Discover tab shows featured content, recommended channels and videos, and movies. The My TV Plus tab shows users their favorite channels and reminders. The app also supports a floating window, which means that users can continue using their smartphone or tablet while watching Samsung TV Plus videos in a smaller, floating window.

Right now, Samsung is offering access to 37 channels via Samsung TV Plus in South Korea across various genres, including children, entertainment, lifestyle, movies, music, news, sports, and TV series. The app is compatible with Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 8.0 or newer. The app was first launched in the US last year in September. The app will go live in Canada, Germany, and India this month.

Lee Won-jin, Vice President of Services for Samsung Electronics’ wireless business, said, “The Samsung TV Plus mobile app is a new platform for conveniently watching a variety of content, and will delight Galaxy users by continuously expanding content.”

Samsung rolling out April 2021 security patch to Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+

Samsung was the first Android OEM to release the April 2021 security patch. The company has already rolled out the latest security update to a bunch of Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Now, Samsung’s flagship smartphones from 2017, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, have started receiving the new security patch.

The South Korean smartphone giant released the April 2021 security patch to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ in South Korea earlier today. The new update for the Galaxy S8 bears firmware version G950NKSU5DUD1, while the update for the Galaxy S8+ has firmware version G955NKSU5DUD1. The new software update includes fixes from Samsung for 21 exposures and vulnerabilities and fixes from Google for 30 severe (or critical) vulnerabilities.

The updates are being rolled out for the carrier versions of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. However, we expect Samsung to release the updates for unlocked and international variants of the Galaxy S8 series. If you are a Galaxy S8 or S8+ user in South Korea, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and then tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware files from our firmware database.

The Galaxy S8 series was launched in early 2017 with Android 7.0, and over the years, the smartphones have received two major Android OS updates: Android 8.0 and Android 9.0 (with One UI). Right now, the phones are on a quarterly update schedule, but Samsung could soon move them to a biannual update schedule since it has been more than four years since their launch.

Galaxy A52 5G starts getting the April 2021 security patch

Samsung started rolling out the April 2021 security patch to its smartphones late last month. However, most Galaxy smartphones, including the recently-released Galaxy A52, received the latest security patch earlier this month. The company has now started rolling out the April 2021 security patch to the Galaxy A52 5G.

The Galaxy A52 5G (SM-A526B) is now receiving the April 2021 security patch in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. The latest software update for the smartphone has firmware version A526BXXS1AUD1. The latest security patch from Samsung includes fixes for 21 exposures and vulnerabilities spanning various potential attack vectors, encryption algorithm oversights, and unexpected behaviors from specific execution policies being misconfigured. The update also includes fixes for 30 vulnerabilities that Google termed as severe or critical.

If you are a Galaxy A52 5G user in any of the countries mentioned above, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. If you don’t want to wait for the update to arrive, you can download the firmware from our firmware section and flash it manually. We expect the latest update to reach the Galaxy A52 5G in more countries over the next couple of weeks.

The Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A52 5G were unveiled last month alongside the Galaxy A72. They come with Android 11-based One UI 3.1 out of the box, and Samsung has promised to release three major Android OS updates and up to four years of security patches to the smartphones.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 will come with S Pen, but don’t expect a dedicated slot

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup offers higher productivity and better multitasking, thanks to the larger screen and the ability to use three apps side by side. Most consumers say that they can never go back to a traditional smartphone once they’ve used a Galaxy Z Fold device. To maximize productivity, some users have been demanding the S Pen functionality to be added to Samsung’s future foldable smartphones.

The Galaxy Z Fold series uses thinner-than-usual screen protection, so using an S Pen may damage it in the long run. Six months ago, it was first reported that Samsung had finally made its mind to offer S Pen functionality on the Galaxy Z Fold series. The company has reportedly figured out a solution by making the foldable screen’s UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) protection thicker than its current state and embedding a digitizer for the S Pen. South Korean media had confirmed two months ago that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will indeed have S Pen compatibility, but it is now being reported that the upcoming foldable phone won’t have a dedicated slot for the S Pen.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 may lack a dedicated S Pen slot due to lack of space, water-resistance issues

Until last month, Samsung was reportedly trying to make room for the S Pen within the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s chassis. However, the company has now decided to exclude the dedicated slot for the S Pen due to lack of internal space as well as dust and water resistance issues. The report also states that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will indeed come with a dust and water resistance rating, similar to most other high-end phones from Samsung.

Like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung may offer a separate case for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to hold the S Pen. The S Pen and the case might be sold separately. The report also claims that the upcoming foldable smartphone will be compatible with the S Pen Pro that was unveiled alongside the Galaxy S21 series earlier this year. The South Korean firm is still two months away from the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s production schedule (June 2021), so the company’s decision to exclude a dedicated slot for the S Pen may change in the future.
