Apple is reducing Samsung’s control on its iPhone OLED panel supply

Samsung enjoys a dominant position as the leading mobile OLED panel manufacturer. Many companies source the OLED panels they use in their products from Samsung. Apple is no exception. For a few years now, Samsung has supplied the bulk of all OLED panels for the iPhone.

That’s going to change this year. As competing manufacturers improve their OLED yields, Apple is diversifying its supply chain. The company won’t be buying as many iPhone OLED panels as it did before from Samsung.

LG Display wants to steal Samsung’s thunder

A report out of South Korea points out that Samsung Display supplied 78% of all OLED panels used for the iPhone last year. However, it will only supply about 65% of all panels required by Apple this year.

It’s claimed that Apple is expected to source 169 million OLED panels this year. Samsung is expected to supply 110 million units with LG Display and China’s BOE providing 50 million and 9 million units respectively.

LG Display’s share will increase from 21% last year to 29% in 2021. In terms of volume, it’s going to ship 50 million units this year compared to the 25 million it shipped last year. LG Display has been working hard to steal some of Samsung Display’s market share.

The drop in Samsung’s share of the pie is more than what analysts had initially predicted. For Apple, it makes sense from a purely business standpoint to have a diversified supply chain. Not only does that mitigate any supply shortages but it also provides more bargaining power. The increased competition will enable Apple to secure the panels it needs at much better prices.

Galaxy M40 starts getting the Android 11 update

Samsung is having an impressive run when it comes to software updates for Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The company has already released the Android 11 update to most of its high-end and mid-range Galaxy devices. The South Korean firm has now released the Android 11 update to the Galaxy M40.

The Galaxy M40 has started receiving the Android 11-based One UI 3 update in India. Since it is the standard Android 11 changelog from Samsung, we are unsure if this is a One UI 3.0 or One UI 3.1 update. We will try to update the article once we get more information on this matter. Nevertheless, this update should bring standard Android 11 features like one-time permissions, auto permissions reset, chat bubbles, a media player widget in the quick settings toggle area, a conversations section, and easier access to smart home controls.

It should also include various One UI 3 related features, including a redesigned UI, refreshed icons, more Dynamic Lockscreen options and lockscreen widgets, improved stock apps, a newer version of Samsung Keyboard and Samsung Internet, and improved Digital Wellbeing and parental controls. If you are a Galaxy M40 user in India, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install.

We expect Samsung to roll out the Android 11 update to the Galaxy M40 in more markets in the coming weeks. The Galaxy M40 was launched in mid-2019 with Android 9.0 (One UI), and since then, the phone has released two major Android OS updates. The smartphone is currently on a quarterly security update schedule.

Samsung now lets you transform your old phones into smart home devices

Most of us have a couple of old phones lying at the bottom of a cabinet we haven’t opened for quite some time. These relics now gather dust as they serve no purpose since we’ve moved on to newer devices.

In its efforts to reduce waste, Samsung has launched a new initiative that lets you breathe new life in your old Galaxy phones. The company is making it possible to transform them into smart home devices.

Give your old Galaxy phones a new lease on life

Samsung announced its Galaxy Upcycling at Home program in January this year. It would provide a software update for the phones that will enable them to work as IoT devices. The initiative is now in beta stage.

Samsung has rolled out the update for users in the United Kingdom, South Korea and the United States. With this update, users can have their old phones double as simple smart home devices such as a childcare monitor, a pet care solution, etc.

These simple IoT devices provide enhanced sound and light control features by utilizing the smartphones’ built-in sensors. Users can access these features through SmartThings Labs via the SmartThings app.

The upcycled devices are able to accurately distinguish sounds through an improved AI solution. Users can choose to save certain sound recordings. For example, if the device picks up the sound of a baby crying or a dog barking, it will send an alert to the user’s phone immediately. Users can then listen to the recorded sound, enabling them to use their old phones as a baby monitor.

The device’s light sensor can also be used to measure the brightness level of the room. Users can set the device to automatically turn on the lights through SmartThings if the room becomes darker than the set standard of light.

In order for the device to continuously detect sound and light, it needs to operate for long periods of time. With this update, Samsung has added battery optimizing solutions to reduce battery usage. These devices hook up to the SmartThings platform and can also interact with the wide variety of smart devices in the ecosystem.

The Galaxy Upcycling at Home feature is available on all Galaxy S, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Z models released from 2018 with Android 9 and above. Samsung will add support for more devices in the future.

Bixby 3.0 brings support for Indian English and India-specific features

While Samsung isn’t focusing on Bixby as much as it used to during its launch events, the company is still keeping its AI-powered voice assistant updated with new and improved features. Six months ago, the company completely redesigned Bixby’s UI and added support for Samsung DeX. The South Korean firm has now launched Bixby 3.0 in India with support for Indian English and India-specific features.

Bixby can now understand Indian English and context. The company said that its digital voice assistant now has the capability to understand Indian names, contacts, relations, places, recipes, content, and a lot more. Bixby can now check the weather in your city, start a yoga timer, understand Indian words for relationships, and show you recipes for local cuisines. If you are a Galaxy user in India, you can now change Bixby’s language to English (India) from its language settings menu.

You can set relationships and their names by clicking on the profile image towards the top of the screen. Alternatively, you can just say any Indian relationship name, and Bixby will assist you in linking those names to specific contacts. Samsung said that it will add more India-specific features to Bixby in the coming months. This new version of Bixby is currently only available on the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A72, and the Galaxy S21, but more devices will support it soon.
