Galaxy Unpacked April 2021: Where to watch the livestream

Samsung is about to unveil what it has described as its most powerful Galaxy device to date. It’s actually a trio of devices, specifically notebooks, and they’re launching as part of the Galaxy Book family. They’ve been referred to the Galaxy Book (Go), the Galaxy Book Pro, and the Galaxy Book 360.

Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Book trio in less than an hour from the time of this writing, and anyone interested in the reveal can follow Samsung’s event livestream linked below. The show is scheduled to take place at 10AM ET / 7AM PT.

As usual, we’ll keep you up to speed with new details as soon as they emerge, so make sure to keep an eye on our newsfeed. The Galaxy Book series has been subjected to a few leaks and rumors so far, but we’ll have to wait for Samsung to confirm when, where, and at what prices the new trio of notebooks will be released.

Galaxy Note 20/Note 20 Ultra getting May 2021 security update

The Galaxy Note 21 may not happen, but the May 2021 security update is already happening on the Galaxy Note 20 series. More specifically, the rollout started in Germany with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G today morning, CET. And the regular Galaxy Note 20 joined the party in the early afternoon.

This particular OTA download is identified by build versions N986BXXU2DUDA and N980FXXU2DUDA for the Galaxy Note 20 5G and Galaxy Note 20, respectively. The rest of the models from the lineup should be getting the same firmware in a matter of days, if not hours.

Not our last Note update but what about another Note?

An upgrade to the May 1st security patch level isn’t the only thing that’s on board here, either. As we’ve already reported this week, expect some camera improvements and a refined sharing functionality, at least on Samsung’s recent flagships. Which the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 5G most definitely are. Plus, you know, the changelog numbers are kind of a giveaway that this is fundamentally the same firmware that Samsung’s been pushing out to the Galaxy S21 range as of Monday.

You can try triggering a download manually by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install. But that probably won’t unless you’re in Germany right now. The rollout should go global by this time next week, however. Plus, our firmware archive already offers full system images for the most experienced and impatient among the Galaxy Note 20 owners. Just in case someone wants to flash them manually, but the wait for the new patch shouldn’t be too long, either way. And stay tuned for the complete security bulletin detailing the new update that Samsung’s yet to publish.

This is the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s battery and it’s not good news

It won’t be long before Samsung comes out with its new foldable smartphone. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is one of Samsung’s highly anticipated phones of 2021. Samsung will be making a lot of improvements to the device.

The expectation will be that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be bigger and better than its predecessor. That may not hold true as far as the battery capacity is concerned. It looks like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will actually have a smaller battery than the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Samsung will need to find efficiency gains elsewhere

This possibility was first reported last week. The Galaxy Z Fold 3’s dual battery was spotted going through the 3C certification process in China. The EB-BF926ABY and EB-BF927ABY batteries had a capacity of 2,060mAh and 2,215mAh respectively. This meant that the combined battery capacity would be 4,275mAh.

The same batteries with identical part numbers have now been certified in South Korea. The certification process has also revealed images of these batteries. They confirm that the total capacity is going to be lower than the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s.

Samsung could market the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s battery capacity as 4,380mAh or 4,400mAh. Be that as it may, it would still be lower than the 4,500mAh dual battery found inside the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The obvious benefit of a smaller battery will be in the form of a slightly thinner and lighter device.

The company could make up for the loss of capacity through other means. More power efficient internals will certainly help. Samsung may also rely on software optimizations to get the same longevity out of the smaller battery.

Samsung is yet to confirm when it plans on unveiling the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Reports suggest that the company might unveil the new foldable device in July.

Galaxy S20 series starts getting May 2021 security patch

It is not even May yet, but Samsung has already started rolling out the May 2021 security patch to some of its high-end Galaxy phones. Yesterday, the Galaxy S21 series received the May 2021 security patch, and now the Galaxy S20 series has started getting the latest security update in a few markets.

The latest update for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which includes the May 2021 security patch, is rolling out in Germany right now. The new updates for the three phones have firmware version G98xxXXU7DUDB. Apart from the new security patch, the update also brings improved camera performance and Quick Share to the Galaxy S20 series.

The Quick Share menu is now accessible from the Advanced Features section on the Galaxy S20 series, and its quick toggle now shows if you have set to share files with everyone or only with your contacts. It means that you won’t have to go to Quick Share settings to change the selection. The download size of the new update is over 600MB, so we would advise you to use a Wi-Fi network.

If you are a Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, or Galaxy S20 Ultra user in Germany, you might have received the update already. If not, you can manually check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the firmware file from our firmware section and flash it manually.
