Samsung shows who’s the boss in the global smart TV market

Although Xiaomi managed to breeze past Samsung as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, it is still king of the hill when it comes to smart TVs.

That is largely due to Samsung’s objectively superior products, which are second only to the likes of LG. Now a new study by Chinese market research firm Auweiyun sheds light on the smart TV market.

Samsung retains top spot in the smart TV market

The study states that 98.3 million TVs were sold in H1 2021. That figure isn’t terribly surprising, given the increased demand for content consumption peripherals. Samsung outshined all of its competition by shipping nearly 20.8 million smart TVs, which represents a 11% increase compared to last year.

Arch-nemesis LG came in second with 13.1 million units shipped, followed by TCL at 11.4 million. Xiaomi is fifth on the list, followed by the likes of Sony, Phillips and other players.

Xiaomi’s slide to fifth place is slightly alarming, as the company has shifted a lot of focus towards dominating the low-cost smart TV market, but it clearly got outshined by its compatriots namely TCL and Hisense. A little reevaluation in strategy could help propel Xiaomi ahead of Hisense and TCL, but it is unlikely to catch up to LG, let alone Samsung, anytime soon.

Samsung and LG’s hegemony over the high-end smart TV segment is what sets them apart from the competition. It is a bid disappointing to see Sony relegated to sixth place, as the company is one of the better TV makers out there. Besides, most TV manufacturers rely on panels made by either company, so Samsung/LG still get paid at the end of the day.

BREAKING: Samsung boss Lee Jae-yong granted parole, will be released on Friday

Samsung Group’s leader, Lee Jae-yong, was sent to jail a few months ago on bribery charges. However, it was being speculated that he may be pardoned by the South Korean president sometime in August. Now, it is being reported that Lee has been granted parole, which means that he will soon be released from jail.

Lee Jae-yong will reportedly be released from the Seoul Detention Center at 10 AM on Friday (August 13). However, his freedom could be short-lived as he is fighting two more criminal cases. He was allegedly involved in accounting fraud and other offenses during the merger of Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T. He is also facing charges related to the use of anesthetic propofol without a prescription.

If Lee receives a prison sentence in any of the two other cases, his parole will be canceled. However, a law is being revised in South Korea, and that could prevent the cancellation of his parole. Under the upcoming revision, parole will only be canceled if someone commits a crime after receiving parole.

A possibility of parole for Samsung’s jailed Vice Chairman was hotly debated. Various US firms, high-placed Buddhist monks in South Korea, and even the South Korean public from all age groups requested that Lee should be pardoned and released from jail. However, some civic groups and leader unions said that Lee shouldn’t be released from jail.

S Pen Pro video surfaces ahead of Galaxy Z Fold 3 launch

Samsung had teased the S Pen Pro stylus for the first time during the announcement of the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The company had mentioned that it will launch the pro-grade stylus sometime later this year. A few days ago, it was revealed that the S Pen Pro would also work with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Now, a video of the upcoming stylus has leaked ahead of the official launch.

The S Pen Pro’s video was published on Twitter on Saturday, revealing its design. From the looks of it, the upcoming stylus will have a button on the front along with a white status LED. There appears to be another switch towards the end of the S Pen Pro, but we are not sure what it does. It was leaked earlier that the S Pen Pro features Bluetooth LE (for Air Actions) and that it can be charged using a USB Type-C port, but the video doesn’t show any port, which may be hidden.

The stylus may be available in only one color: black. It will be compatible with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Samsung may have used a special material to make the S Pen Pro’s nib so that it doesn’t damage the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s relatively smoother foldable screen. Samsung has revealed that it has also developed a special S Pen (called S Pen Fold Edition) for the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

More information about the S Pen Pro and the S Pen Fold Edition will be unveiled during Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event on August 11.

Watch this Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3 video if you want to ruin your Unpacked experience

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 leaks refuse to stop as we continue to get closer to Samsung’s August 11 Unpacked event. We’ve seen so much about the new foldables already that the upcoming launch may as well not happen anymore. The only thing left for Samsung to do is to confirm everything officially, but if you can’t wait and are wondering if some of the biggest Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 features are real, the leaked video embedded below is all you need to watch.

Disclaimer: Turn back now if you have somehow managed to avoid all previous leaks

The 30-second video showcases a few of the best Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 features. First, it confirms that the two foldables are water resistant. Both devices are expected to feature IPx8 certification, which means they will be able to withstand submersion in freshwater up to a maximum depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. That’s the same degree of protection Samsung’s non-folding flagships have been offering for many years.

Second, the teaser confirms that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 supports the S Pen. It’s the second phone from Samsung that isn’t a Note to support the S Pen – the first was the Galaxy S21 Ultra that launched earlier this year. We also get to see the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s larger cover screen. It’s said to measure 1.9 inches, while the cover display on the original Galaxy Z Flip was a measly 1.1 inches. Not a huge upgrade, but certainly a welcome one that customers will appreciate.

Are you excited about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Galaxy Z Flip 3? Which of the two do you have your eyes on? Will you also be picking up the Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Buds 2 that will launch alongside Samsung’s new foldables?
