Samsung announces SmartThings Edge for faster and more reliable home automation

SmartThings is one of the world’s top IoT and home automation platforms, and Samsung is improving it every year with new feature additions. Over the past few months, Samsung has launched SmartThings Find and SmartThings Energy to the platform. Now, the company has announced SmartThings Edge for faster and more reliable home automation.

SmartThings Edge is a new hub architecture that allows the core functionality of smart home products to be executed on the local network rather than depending on cloud processing. This makes experiences faster, more reliable, and more secure. The company says that users might not see changes in the front-end, but the back-end will get notably faster in terms of connectivity and experience.

This new feature eliminates the need for cloud-based processing, which means that a lot of processes can be accomplished locally on a SmartThings Hub. Users can also add devices LAN-based, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices. SmartThings Edge is compatible with version 2 and version 3 SmartThings Hubs and on newer hubs that are sold by Aotec. The company is also bringing support for Matter, an open-source smart home platform that is also backed by Amazon, Apple, and Google.

Samsung is slowly moving away from the legacy Groovy platform and modernizing a lot of its core components. Developers can now build device drivers with Lua to offer a more robust and simpler way for integrating smart home products into SmartThings. The company says that it is committed to improving SmartThings to build more meaningful experiences.

Here’s how much it costs to replace Galaxy Z Flip 3 or Z Fold 3’s broken screen

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are impressive foldable smartphones. They are more durable than their predecessors, thanks to stronger bodies, tighter hinges, and an IPX8 rating for water resistance. Samsung has also mentioned that its new phones are tested to withstand up to 200,000 folds, but what if their screens break accidentally? How much would it cost to fix them?

Samsung mentioned to The Verge that if the Galaxy Z Flip 3 or the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s screen breaks in a way that is covered under warranty, you don’t have to pay anything to get it fixed. Out of warranty, replacing the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s inner display costs $369 and fixing the cover display costs $99. For the Galaxy Z Fold 3, getting the inner display fixed costs $479, and the cover display replacement costs $149.

A simple calculation shows that foldable screen replacement on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3’s costs 36% and 26%, respectively. However, you can subscribe to the Samsung Care+ service plan that brings down the repair cost to $249. This plan costs $12.99 a month and includes up to three screen repairs. However, Samsung is bundling a 12-month Samsung Care+ subscription for free if you pre-order its new foldable phones.

Since the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are hard to repair, it wouldn’t be a good idea to try and fix a broken screen by yourself. However, Samsung is doing everything it can to improve the adoption of foldable phones. It has reduced the prices of its latest foldable phones compared to earlier models and even slashed the screen repair cost compared to the Galaxy Z Flip ($499) and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 ($549).

Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G teardown video reveals graphite pads and other secrets

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is arguably one of the most beautiful smartphones in recent years. We can all probably agree on this, even though there always will be a group of nay-sayers going against the grain no matter what, out of force of habit, if nothing else. For the majority of smartphone enthusiasts, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a gorgeous piece of technology equipped with a foldable display.

Now, what lies beyond the beautiful exterior design will forever be hidden for most Galaxy Z Flip 3 owners, unless they’re brave enough to perform a disassembly. Thankfully, if you want to have a look inside the Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G, you don’t have to tear it down yourself. The internet has got you covered, and the first Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G disassembly video is already live, courtesy of PBKreviews.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G gets a 4/10 reparability score

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 did the honors yesterday, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G made it on camera in a new disassembly video today. It shows the steps needed to disassemble the new clamshell foldable, and as you’d expect, the process requires a few special tools such as plastic pics and a heat gun.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G uses adhesive for the backplates, the foldable display, and the camera lenses, the latter of which can be easily replaced in case they get scratched.

Inside, though, the internal components are packed closely together with almost no wiggle room. The two batteries are held in place with adhesives and lack prying tabs.

Interestingly enough, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G makes extensive use of graphite pads. It has a large graphite pad stuck to the lower backplate, and a couple more pads can be found on the opposite side, behind the foldable screen.

Fossil Gen 6 renders offer a glimpse of Samsung’s Wear OS without One UI

Wear OS is starting to get a lot more attention now that Samsung was behind its development, and more smartwatch brands are preparing new wearables for the market. Watch manufacturer Fossil is one of them, and its upcoming Gen 6 smartwatch will apparently be using the Samsung-Google-made Wear OS platform.

The Fossil Gen 6 appears to be a direct competitor to the Galaxy Watch 4 series, or at least the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic model, and it too will run this new revamped version of Wear OS at launch. But unlike Samsung’s smartwatches, the Gen 6 won’t take advantage of any One UI features. It will ship with the standard Wear OS interface, parts of which you can see in the leaked renders below — courtesy of WinFuture. So, if you ever wanted a glimpse of Wear OS without One UI on top, there you have it.

Samsung should have an advantage over all of its competitors

Samsung was the third-largest smartwatch vendor in the world last year behind Apple and Huawei, and up until now, the company’s smartwatch business relied almost exclusively on Tizen OS. At least it did so for the past few good years.

Earlier in 2021 though, Samsung and Google joined forces to co-engineer the best-possible wearable operating system under the Wear OS umbrella. And since Samsung worked closely with Google for the development of the new OS, the Korean tech giant should know a lot more about the ins and outs of the platform than any one of its rivals. Hopefully this will translate in a bigger market share.

The Fossil Gen 6 will reportedly cost around 300 — 330 euros, making it slightly cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. However, it doesn’t seem to have a BIA sensor, and of course, it doesn’t have One UI on top of Wear OS, which means it won’t be as closely integrated with Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

Pokemon Unite with cross-play is coming to your Galaxy device next month

Have you pre-ordered the Galaxy Z Fold 3 already? If the answer’s ‘yes,’ then you’re likely looking forward to trying new ways of entertaining yourself with the help of the generous 7.6-inch foldable display. Perhaps you’re searching for a mobile game to enjoy on the bigger screen, but you’ve tried virtually every major title out there and you’d prefer something fresh. Well, if that’s the case, get ready for a new Pokemon game to land on your Galaxy smartphone and tablet next month!

Pokemon Unite will be available to Samsung smartphone and tablet owners from September 22. More specifically, the game will be available across the Android and iOS platforms beginning that date. This isn’t a Samsung-exclusive, mind you, but it is something Samsung customers will be able to enjoy next month, especially if they have a big-screen mobile device like the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Pokemon Unite is a 5v5 MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) type of game — you know, the kind that DotA and League of Legends are — so a larger screen is better suited for the gameplay.

The good news continues for Pokemon fans who happen to own both a Galaxy device and a Nintendo Switch console. By using the same account on both versions of Pokemon Unite (Switch and mobile), users will be able to enjoy cross-platform play across their devices.

The Galaxy M52 and F42 5G might be just a few weeks away from India

Samsung is preparing to launch two new 5G-enabled mid-range smartphones in India — the Galaxy M52 5G and the Galaxy F42 5G — and prospective buyers might even be able to buy these upcoming phones in a matter of weeks. That is, assuming everything goes according to a recent tweet by @Gadgetsdata, who claims that the September launch window for the Galaxy M52 5G and F42 5G is “totally confirmed.”

The source claims to have it on good authority that the Galaxy M52 5G will launch in India near the end of September, while the Galaxy F42 5G will be hitting the shelves sometime next month. Pricing details remain unknown as of this writing, but you can expect mid-range prices similar to the Galaxy A52 5G and A42 5G.

The Galaxy M52 5G is expected to be powered by the same Qualcomm-made chipset as the brand-new Galaxy A52s, namely the Snapdragon 778G SoC, whereas the Galaxy F42 5G should use the Dimensity 700 chip from MediaTek.

We expect the Galaxy F42 5G to be sold in India through online retailer Flipkart, much like all other F-branded phones before it. Cashback deals and pre-order bonuses are almost guaranteed. We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we find out more.

Galaxy Buds+ may have been discontinued

The Galaxy Buds+ were launched in early 2020, and they impressed a lot of people (including us), thanks to their improved audio quality, longer battery life, and comfortable fit. Last week, Samsung launched the Galaxy Buds 2, which are meant to succeed the Galaxy Buds+, and now it looks like the company has discontinued the latter.

While the company hasn’t officially announced the discontinuation of the Galaxy Buds+ yet, they are out of stock in several markets, including India. The folks over at CNET were able to confirm via two Samsung sales representatives (via chat) that the Galaxy Buds+ have indeed been discontinued. Some color variants of the Galaxy Buds+ are available on Samsung’s website in the US for $99, but they could be a part of the leftover stock.

The Galaxy Buds+ were launched with a price tag of $149/€169/INR 11,990, but Samsung had been selling them for as low as $80/€82/INR 5,990 for a few months now. The company had even bundled them for free with its flagship smartphones in some markets. It now looks like Samsung is done with almost all the Galaxy Buds+ units.
