Exynos 2100 powered Galaxy S21 FE makes Geekbench debut

If previous releases are anything to go by, the Galaxy S21 FE is slated to arrive in both Snapdragon and Exynos flavors. An earlier leak had confirmed the former’s existence. Now, a Galaxy S21 FE variant has shown up in the Geekbench database running the Exynos, effectively confirming that not all versions of the smartphone will be created equal.

Renowned leaker FrontTron spotted the Galaxy S21 FE on the benchmarking platform, where it managed to net a single-core score of 1,096 points and a multi-core score of 3,387 points. While this number might seem a tad low for an Exynos 2100, we have to bear in mind that the device in question is running pre-production software, so the chipset might not be performing at full potential.

Underwhelming Geekbench score notwithstanding, we can see that this particular Galaxy S21 FE variant has 8GB of RAM bears model number SM-G990E. The Android version has been cropped out but we can reasonably assume that it will run Android 11 based One UI 3.1 out of the box.

It’ll be interesting to see the market-wise breakdown of the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE’s SoC. Things are usually cut and dry with the US and China receiving the Snapdragon version; however, things are a lot different this year, according to a new report. Then again, the performance difference between the Exynos 2100 and Snapdragon 888 isn’t as egregious as previous generations, so either variant will be fine.

Future WhatsApp Communities update will help you better organize groups

Your favorite messaging app (maybe) from Facebook — WhatsApp — will eventually receive a Communities feature. And, by the way, even if WhatsApp isn’t your favorite messaging platform, you’re still probably using it to a degree. It’s one of the few third-party apps that Samsung itself is willing to help you install, and it’s also one of the platforms Samsung uses for customer support in some markets.

Now, back to the so-called Communities feature. The first clues pointing to its existence were found in a WhatsApp beta build last month, but its capabilities were unclear. Additional information and a couple of screenshots were brought to light more recently through similar methods, i.e., a teardown, this time by WABetaInfo, and we now have a better clue of what this Communities feature’s supposed to do.

WhatsApp Communities is a better way to organize groups

In essence, this unreleased feature would allow WhatsApp group admins to organize groups under a community, or a group of groups, if you will. For example, an online book club could be a WhatsApp Community containing different groups, each with a different purpose.

The leaked screenshots offer a sneak preview of the WhatsApp Community UI, but there’s not much out of the ordinary aside from the square shape of the Community icon. These minor UI details could change by the time WhatsApp Communities goes live, and of course, there’s always the chance that it never will exit these early development stages.

Here’s how the Galaxy S22 could divvy up Exynos and Qualcomm SoCs

The Galaxy S22 series will most likely use Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets in different regions. This shouldn’t surprise any Samsung fans if it weren’t for a recent rumor mudding the waters. The adage ‘nothing’s official until it is’ remains true, and some rumors are more accurate than others. From the realm of high probability, a new rumor from Naver now suggests that the Galaxy S22 series will be a lot more similar to its recent predecessors as to how it will use Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets in different regions. In short, it’s very much in line with our expectations.

The Galaxy S22 series will be equipped with the Snapdragon 898 chipset in the USA (SM-S90xU) and the Exynos 2200 SoC in South Korea (SM-S90xN). The report doesn’t mention which chipset will be used for the international / European Galaxy S22 models (SM-S90xB), but as always, the Exynos 2200 is a safe bet (via @MaxWinebach).

And the mysterious SM-S90xE variants will be powered by:

The Snapdragon 898 chipset. According to this new information, the E-based Galaxy S22 models we discussed yesterday should be powered by Qualcomm’s solution rather than the in-house, Samsung-developed Exynos 2200 SoC. These variants (SM-S90xE) are supposedly planned for sale in countries in Africa and Asia.

The Exynos chipset packs some serious power, at least based on early online benchmarks, but we could be finding out more about the Exynos 2200 and its new AMD graphics next week. This will be Samsung’s first chipset to use a graphics solution from AMD and saying that expectations are high would be an understatement.

As for the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung should hold a launch event on February 8 and start selling the phones from February 18 after a short pre-order period. The company has yet to make these details official, but leaks suggest that the exact times and dates have already been set in stone behind closed doors.

The Galaxy Buds 2 are now available for purchase at their lowest price yet, thanks to a new limited-time deal from Woot! Samsung initially released the new earbuds for $149.99, but Amazon’s deals website (Woot!) is now selling the Galaxy Buds 2 for $99.99.

All four color options are available for the same price (graphite, white, lavender, and olive), and as usual, each Woot! customer has a choice of buying one or up to five pairs.

Thankfully, unlike other Woot! deals that usually end within 24 hours, the ongoing Galaxy Buds 2 offer should last for 21 more days as of this writing or until sold out.

Great sound and decent ANC for relatively cheap

The Galaxy Buds 2 have a comfortable fit, and they benefit from an IPX2 water resistance rating. ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) works like a charm, and sound quality was improved for this generation of earbuds, with assistance from singer and songwriter Charli XCX.

Battery life isn’t the best, but it’s far from worst. Other than that, the Galaxy Buds 2 are some of the best wireless earbuds on the market, Samsung or otherwise, if not the best $100 can buy. Samsung’s seemingly mocking Apple (again) by gifting cleaning cloths

A cleaning cloth is an essential tool for keeping fingerprint smudges and dust off smartphones, tablets, wearables, and other electronic devices that have a display. Cleaning cloths were sometimes offered for free along with new smartphones and tablets, but retail packaging changed drastically in recent years for environmental purposes. As a result, we now get fewer accessories in the box than ever before. OEMs tend to sell them separately, but interestingly enough, Samsung has now decided to give away free cleaning cloths to Galaxy S20 owners in Germany.

This odd decision probably has to do with Apple’s recent release of the so-called Polishing Cloth. Yes, Apple has a branded polishing cloth on sale now, and it goes for $19. It caused a lot of stir in recent weeks because it’s fundamentally a controversial Apple product, so Samsung is probably trying to bank on this and piggyback on the hype by offering free cleaning cloths to Galaxy S20 users.

Sadly, the campaign has a very limited reach since it went live only in Germany, so we’re not exactly sure what outcome Samsung’s expecting out of it. Again, perhaps the company is attempting to get some spotlight following Apple’s unusual product launch. Then again, there aren’t that many cleaning cloths to go around either. The textile accessory is offered through the Samsung Members app, and the company is giving away only 1,000 units — presumably one per customer.

Why the Galaxy S20 series? Perhaps it’s because the flagship trio is about to turn two years old, and Samsung fears that these customers who could now be looking for an upgrade will be tempted by the iPhone 13 and the $19 Apple-branded cleaning cloth. It’s conjecture, of course, but there’s not much else to say about this frankly unusual, limited reach campaign, other than the fact that the timing doesn’t seem coincidental.

Samsung Internet now works with Wear OS watches from other brands

Samsung Internet went live for the Galaxy Watch 4 series a couple of days ago, giving users a way to surf the internet from their wrist should they need it. Well, it turns out that Samsung’s browser app isn’t limited just to the Galaxy Watch 4 lineup. Other Wear OS smartwatches from different brands are now getting support for Samsung Internet, and they seemingly don’t need the latest Wear OS version for it.

We don’t have Wear OS smartwatches from other brands on our hands, but according to a recent Reddit post, Samsung Internet is now compatible with at least a few non-Samsung smartwatches that run Wear OS 2 or later. One of these wearables is the Oppo Watch, featured in the image below.

Other users also claim to have gotten Samsung Internet running on the Fossil Gen 5, the Casio WSD-F30, and even the Moto 360 3rd gen. In essence, any Wear OS (or later) smartwatch should now support Samsung Internet. The app can be installed through the Google Play Store.

As to whether or not you should be using Samsung Internet on Wear OS, well, it obviously doesn’t provide an ideal browsing experience given the dimensions of smartwatch displays, especially since it tends to load webpages in desktop mode.  But it’s there if you’re looking for ways to browse the web from the wrist, and now, according to these Reddit users, it’s no longer exclusive to the Galaxy Watch 4 series.

Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ selfie camera information revealed

The Galaxy S22 series is expected to go official in February 2022. Ahead of the announcement, most of the specifications of Galaxy S22 series smartphones have been leaked, including their chipsets, screen size, rear-facing cameras, and battery capacity. Now, a new report has revealed information about their front-facing cameras.

According to GalaxyClub, the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ will continue using the 10MP selfie camera, similar to the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20, and the Galaxy S21. It is even possible that Samsung is using the same sensor size, aperture, and autofocus. If you can remember, the Galaxy S21 and the Galaxy S21+ feature a 10MP selfie camera with a 1/3.24-inch sensor, 1.22µm pixels, dual-pixel autofocus, an F2.2 aperture, and 4K 60fps video recording.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra will reportedly use a 40MP selfie camera, similar to its predecessors, the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Samsung hasn’t upgraded selfie cameras on its high-end smartphones for three years in a row. The Galaxy S21’s front-facing camera is not bad by any means, but given how much people have started using front-facing cameras lately (for video meetings and vlogging), the company should improve selfie cameras on its phones.
