Samsung’s alleged plans for the foldable market in 2022 extend beyond phones

Samsung Display teased the future of flexible OLED screens with the launch of a new website earlier this week. The portal confirms Samsung’s dedication to exploring new form factors powered by flexible display technology, including slideable and rollable devices. Some of these concepts could become reality next year, at least according to a new rumor that also claims to shed some light on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4.

The company could announce its first foldable laptop in 2022 — presumably under the name of “Galaxy Book Fold 17″. Laptops are foldable by default, evidently, but Samsung’s futuristic take on the tried and proven form factor will have a single foldable display covering both halves of the device. One half of the foldable display can double as a touch keyboard or morph into other types of controls. The foldable laptop could be announced in early 2022, though its timeline will be affected by Samsung’s foldable display production capacity and remains subject to change.

Furthermore, Samsung is reportedly planning to tease the Slideable Flex form factor in more detail next year. The report doesn’t mention rollable displays, which could mean that Samsung will focus on materializing the slideable form factor first and foremost. Then again, slideable and rollable displays should fundamentally be the same.

The company could unveil a working slideable prototype around the Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 4’s announcement.

Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 4 to have improved hinges and UTG

The rumor suggests that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 won’t represent a huge departure from the ongoing models, which doesn’t quite line up our expectations, at least as far as the clamshell flagship series is concerned. But reportedly, the sequels will bring meaningful changes to the hinge design and the structure of the foldable screen.

The hinge will have a simplified design which will be cheaper to manufacture, and the foldable display will have improved UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), which will allow it to bend in a smaller radius. Despite these improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 will reportedly be lighter and thinner than the current generation.

Samsung is leading the foldable display segment and will continue to do so next year. The company will want to introduce this technology to more segments, but keep in mind that leaked details are subject to change.

Samsung’s high-end soundbards continue to receive praise from experts

Samsung has been the world’s biggest soundbar brand for seven years consecutively, and the company makes soundbars for all price segments. Its high-end soundbars come with Dolby Atmos, additional speakers, high-end wireless connectivity, and amazing sound. Experts around the world are heaping praises for Samsung’s high-end soundbars.

British AV review website AVForums chose three soundbars from Samsung as ‘Best Products Of 2021’. The publication said that the HW-Q950A soundbar with 11.4-channel audio. Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X “provides the most immersive soundbar ever released.” Many other Dolby Atmos home theatre systems in the market have multiple speakers, separate amplifiers, and lots of wires, making the room messy. But the HW-Q950A is a wireless soundbar that keeps the room tidy while offering immersive audio.

The tech publication chose the HW-Q800A as the ‘Best All-Round Soundbar of 2021’ and the HW-S60A as the ‘Best Lifestyle Soundbar of 2021’. Experts from the website also praised Samsung’s Q-Symphony feature that uses TV and soundbar speakers simultaneously for a more immersive audio experience.

American tech website TechRadar and British website Pocket-Lint chose the HW-Q950A as ‘Editor’s Choice’. The folks over at Pocket-Lint gave the soundbar a 5/5 review score and said “Whether it’s a blockbuster movie, your favourite TV show, music or gaming, this commanding performer will put a smile on your face. There’s a host of features that all earn their keep, meaning that aside from a few minor complaints, the HW-Q950A is pretty much perfect. You won’t get better home cinema audio at home unless you go all-out and buy into a complex separates system.”

Samsung to ramp up OLED production to keep up with rising demand

At this point, it is abundantly clear that Samsung Display is miles ahead of the pack when it comes to manufacturing high-end components for smartphones, tablets, and even laptops. Demand for its products is at an all-time high, as confirmed by its soaring market share. That’s why Samsung Display is planning to ramp up the production of OLED panels.

A new report from Digitimes claims that Samsung Display is in the process of phasing out the production of LCD panels in favour of OLED ones. Interestingly enough, a report from earlier had suggested otherwise. Samsung now wants to offload some of the old LCD manufacturing equipment to OEMs based in China or India, according to a report by The Elec. There is, however, one functional LCD production line at its plant in Asan, South Korea.

The new-found capacity at Samsung’s L7-2 plant in South Korea will now be used to manufacture 6G OLED (1,500 x 1,850mm) panels for small to medium applications, which will presumably include smartphones, wearables, tablets, and laptops. It also plans to set up a new 8.5G OLED (2,200 x 2,500mm) production line for QD-QLED displays, which entered mass production earlier this year. Samsung’s L8 plant will output up to 30,000 panels every month.

Samsung officially announces $17 billion semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas

Last week, we reported that Samsung boss Lee Jae-yong travelled to the US to zero in the location of its upcoming $17 billion semiconductor chip plant. After dilly-dallying with several locations, Samsung seemed to have settled for Texas, where it already has a chip plant (in Austin). Now, the company has officially announced that it has chosen the city of Taylor, Texas for its new plant.

The information comes via an official announcement on Samsung’s official website. Construction of the plant is expected to kick off sometime in 2022 and the mass-production will commence sometime in 2024.

While it isn’t specified just which process node the plant will employ, Samsung has specified that it will be used to manufacture products for “5G, high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI)” applications, so it could be a 5nm or newer process.

Samsung’s decision to select Taylor was based on multiple factors, including infrastructure, community development, and support from the local government. Samsung promises to create about 2,000 high-tech jobs in the area. That number is expected to increase soon via programs like Samsung Skills Centre.

Kinam Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO, of Samsung Electronics, said, “With greater manufacturing capacity, we will be able to better serve the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain. We are also proud to be bringing more jobs and supporting the training and talent development for local communities, as Samsung celebrates 25 years of semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S.”

Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 20 get second One UI 4.0 beta update in the US

Samsung had released the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta update to the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Note 20 in the US last week. The update introduced dozens of new features and a revamped UI design, but it also introduced a few bugs. Now, the company has released the second One UI 4.0 beta update to fix some of those bugs.

The second beta update comes with the firmware version ending ZUKA. It fixes various bugs, including the ones related to adaptive screen refresh rate, Quick Share icon, and the search function in the stock Messages app. It also fixes bugs related to the company’s Clear View Display Cover. The update is currently available to the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in the US.

You can check for the new update on your smartphone by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install.

The new beta update might also be released to the Exynos variants of Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones in other regions. Samsung might release at least two more One UI 4.0 beta updates to the smartphones before releasing the stable update sometime next month or in early January 2022.

Samsung also released the second version of the stable One UI 4.0 update to the Galaxy S21 series in the US to fix a bug related to the screen’s adaptive refresh rate feature. With the first stable update, the smartphone reverted to a 60Hz refresh rate as soon as the user stopped touching the display, leading to UI stutters.

Samsung’s new One UI 4.0 update for Galaxy S21 fixes screen refresh rate bug

After beta-testing the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update for the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung released the stable version last week. However, the stable update had a screen refresh rate-related bug that made animations and scrolling appear stuttery. The South Korean firm has now released a new hotfix update to solve the issue.

The US variants of the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra running the first stable version of One UI 4.0 reverted to a 60Hz refresh rate as soon as the user’s finger stopped touching the screen. It is due to a buggy implementation of adaptive screen refresh rate, and it made animations, scrolling, and transitions appear jittery. To fix this issue, Samsung released the second stable version of One UI 4.0 in the US with firmware version G99xUSQU4BUK9.

This new update is currently available on Verizon’s network, and other carriers could release it soon. While the official changelog doesn’t specifically mention this bug fix, many users have confirmed that it largely solves the screen refresh rate issue. Global variants of the Galaxy S21 series do not have this issue, so the new update might not be released to those units.
