Samsung sells over a million units of The Frame TV in 2021

Samsung has announced that it has managed to sell over a million units of The Frame TV worldwide in 2021. This is the first time its lifestyle TV sales crossed the million mark within a year. Since The Frame TV’s launch in 2017, the South Korean firm has sold nearly two million units. The company said that there’s massive demand from Europe and North America for its lifestyle TVs.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for big-screen and premium TVs has risen. Keeping that in mind, Samsung launched more screen size options for its lifestyle TVs, including The Frame. The TV is available in five sizes: 32-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch. In 2020, the South Korean firm introduced the QLED display technology to The Frame, and in 2021, it added the 4K 120Hz feature.

Samsung also allows users to change the look of the TV to match users’ home decor. Users can choose between a flat-style bezel (brown, teak, or white) and a beveled chamfer-style bezel (white or brick red). They can also wall-mount it or set it up on an art gallery-style studio stand. Samsung has also partnered with major art stores, artists, and museums worldwide to offer pieces of art via the Art Store.

Simon Sung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Sales & Marketing Team of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “The Frame is not just a device for watching TV, but a lifestyle product which enhances a space with its design and enriches consumers’ lives with an extensive art collection. We continue to look for ways to strengthen The Frame’s offerings to find innovative ways to satisfy consumers’ evolving needs and desires. We are also always exploring partnerships with new museums, galleries, and artists to offer a much wider range of collections in the Art Store.

I wanted to take the Galaxy Z Fold 3 on a trip, but something stopped me

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 doesn’t feel like an experimental device, despite being just the third flagship foldable phone from Samsung. Its price tag of $1800 is impressive, too. In addition to giving you a nice large foldable screen, the Z Fold 3 has pretty much all the ingredients you expect in a top-of-the-line phone from Samsung, including water resistance and S Pen support.

My biggest gripe is that the cameras aren’t the best. The main rear camera is great, and the under-display camera is better than expected for a first-time tech. But the telephoto camera is outdated and can’t match even mid-range phones like the Galaxy A72, let alone the Galaxy S lineup.

Still, as I prepared to travel to another city this week, I looked at the Galaxy Z Fold 3 sitting in my drawer (it’s a review unit from Samsung; I don’t have the kind of money to buy foldables only to keep them in my drawer) and felt like taking it along as my main device. I wasn’t going on a leisure trip, so I thought I’d make do with the limited zooming capabilities of the camera.

But then I realized there’s another issue with this phone that makes it a less-than-ideal travel companion.

It’s the battery life.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 battery life is one of its few weaknesses

If you’ve read our Galaxy Z Fold 3 review, you’ll know that we weren’t impressed by its battery life. Where the original Fold and the Z Fold 2 could easily last a day, the Z Fold 3 can’t and is not nearly as dependable as its predecessors.

The fact that the Z Fold 3 has high refresh rate displays on both the inside and outside is clearly a factor here, but battery life is further impacted by the reduced battery capacity. The Z Fold 3 has a 4,400 mAh battery, 100 mAh less the Fold and the Z Fold 2.

So I decided to stick with my Galaxy S21 Ultra instead of switching to the Z Fold 3. The big screen on the latter can be useful when you’re travelling, but it’s not worth the trade-off in battery endurance. Here’s hoping Samsung addresses this next year… maybe by making a Galaxy Fold XL as I and many others wish for? We’ll have to wait and see!

Samsung’s leading MEA even though its phones are priced highest on average

The third quarter of the year was quite favorable for Samsung in several regions, including MEA and the Philippines, where the company is leading the charge ahead of its rivals.

The MEA smartphone market had the best Q3 on record. The market grew 1% year-on-year and an impressive 7.5% quarter-on-quarter. Counterpoint Research estimates that a total of 46.5 million smartphones were shipped to MEA in Q3.

Samsung was the most influential smartphone vendor in the MEA region at the end of Q3. The company’s market share declined from 23.1% to 20.5% year-on-year, however, Samsung managed to overcome supply issues and stop its quarterly decline. It recorded an 8% quarter-on-quarter increase in shipments in Q3.

Of note is that the average selling price for smartphones in the MEA region has steadily increased over the past couple of years, and Samsung’s phones saw the steepest climb, from an average price of $192 two years ago to $282 in Q3 2021.

Samsung climbs from 5th to 1st in the Philippines

Samsung was the 4th largest smartphone vendor in the Philippines at the end of the 3rd quarter last year, trailing behind Realme, Vivo, and Oppo. And although the Philippines smartphone market declined 9% year-on-year due to lockdowns and supply chain issues, Samsung was able to increase its market share from 15% in Q3 2020 to 23% a year later and steal the crown from Realme. Xiaomi continues leading online retail with a 31% market share, ahead of Realme and Samsung.

Market watchers believe that Samsung won the podium in the Philippines in Q3 2021 thanks to its low-cost and mid-range phones, such as the Galaxy A12 and the Galaxy A21s, which were “major contributors” to Samsung’s positive results.

Samsung now offers 40 new bezel color options for The Frame lifestyle TV

The Frame is one of the most stylish smart TVs on the market, next to Samsung’s other lifestyle TVs. The Frame was designed to blend in with its environment, similar to a painting or a framed photo, thanks to its interchangeable frame (bezel). Samsung has now extended the color palette for The Frame’s bezel with the addition of 40 new color options.

Samsung picked the new bezel colors for The Frame in collaboration with interior expert Kate Watson-Smyth. The color palette for The Frame is now richer than ever, giving budding designers plenty of ways to complement or emphasize colors within the surrounding environment.

The new colors are now available exclusively online

Samsung has launched these 40 new colors for The Frame via its dedicated portal. The website went live a couple of months ago, allowing customers in the UK to pick new Premium and Deluxe color options for their Frame bezels.

The same website now hosts the additional 40 colors. The new bezel options start at £129, and they’re available for the entire range, from 32-to-75-inch The Frame models. The new colors should also be available for the 85-inch The Frame — which was introduced earlier this summer in South Korea for $5,800 — but the latter is presently out of stock.

Samsung’s alleged plans for the foldable market in 2022 extend beyond phones

Samsung Display teased the future of flexible OLED screens with the launch of a new website earlier this week. The portal confirms Samsung’s dedication to exploring new form factors powered by flexible display technology, including slideable and rollable devices. Some of these concepts could become reality next year, at least according to a new rumor that also claims to shed some light on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4.

The company could announce its first foldable laptop in 2022 — presumably under the name of Galaxy Book Fold 17″. Laptops are foldable by default, evidently, but Samsung’s futuristic take on the tried and proven form factor will have a single foldable display covering both halves of the device. One half of the foldable display can double as a touch keyboard or morph into other types of controls. The foldable laptop could be announced in early 2022, though its timeline will be affected by Samsung’s foldable display production capacity and remains subject to change.

Furthermore, Samsung is reportedly planning to tease the Slideable Flex form factor in more detail next year. The report doesn’t mention rollable displays, which could mean that Samsung will focus on materializing the slideable form factor first and foremost. Then again, slideable and rollable displays should fundamentally be the same.

The company could unveil a working slideable prototype around the Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 4’s announcement.

Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 4 to have improved hinges and UTG

The rumor suggests that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 won’t represent a huge departure from the ongoing models, which doesn’t quite line up our expectations, at least as far as the clamshell flagship series is concerned. But reportedly, the sequels will bring meaningful changes to the hinge design and the structure of the foldable screen.

The hinge will have a simplified design which will be cheaper to manufacture, and the foldable display will have improved UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), which will allow it to bend in a smaller radius. Despite these improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 will reportedly be lighter and thinner than the current generation.

Samsung is leading the foldable display segment and will continue to do so next year. The company will want to introduce this technology to more segments, but keep in mind that leaked details are subject to change.
