Samsung starts construction of a new chip-production line

Samsung’s semiconductor business has consistently been showing stellar performance which is why it’s no surprise to see that even this year the company plans to put in as much as $10 billion into the business. The company today broke ground on the construction of a new chip-production line to further expand its influence in the semiconductor business. President Park Geun-hye attended the groundbreaking ceremony today alongside 600 officials from the government and related companies.

The company’s new chip-production line is based in Pyeongtaek which is around 70 kilometers south of Seoul, the company expects to start production at the facility in the first half of 2017. Samsung is going to spend $14.4 billion on this production line, making it the company’s largest-ever investment in a single production line.

The Pyeongtaek facility will become Samsung’s largest chip-making production line upon completion as it will be based on 2.89 million square meters of land, far greater than the company’s facilities in Giheung and Hwaseong which come in at 1.32 million sq. meters and 1.58 million sq. meters respectively. It will even be larger than the Xi’an, China facility which has been developed on a lot of 1.39 million sq. meters.

“Samsung’s chip business, which kicked off in a country that lacked technology, is poised to make another leap for South Korea’s future,” said Samsung Electronics CEO Kwon Oh-hyun, adding that the company hopes its Pyeongtaek line will play a major role in shaping the country’s “creative economy policy.”

#TextsFromMom Mother’s Day ad by Samsung is equal parts funny and cute

Mother’s Day isn’t that far off and naturally companies are releasing all sorts of advertisements that tug at your heartstrings and compel you to buy whatever it is that they’re selling. Samsung certainly doesn’t want to be left behind so it has released an ad of its own. Titled #TextsFromMom the ad is equal parts funny and cute as it shows how mothers are likely to use the text messaging feature of their smartphone.

The ad runs for about one minute and while the focus might be on those text messages you can’t help but notice that Samsung’s latest flagship handsets are front and center in this advertisement. Why wouldn’t they be, after all it’s the Galaxy S6 that Samsung is trying to sell. This ad is going to ring true with anybody who has ever taught their mother how to text and has then been on the receiving end of those text messages, how at times they can be overbearing but never without love, care and affection. Samsung wraps it up by reminding us that it’s better to call mom this Sunday on Mother’s Day then just replying to her texts.

Samsung is also running a social media campaign on the back of this advertisement. Simply share some of the funniest texts that your mother has ever sent you with the hashtag #TextsFromMom on Twitter and you can enter to win a Galaxy S6 edge.

‘Artik’ is reportedly Samsung’s new IoT-based mobile cloud platform

According to a new report Samsung Electronics is working on a new mobile cloud service called “Artik,” this Internet of Things based cloud platform will apparently be used by the company to bring together all of the different connected smart devices that it makes. A trademark has already been filed by the company for Samsung Artik with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the documents reveal that this patent is for a cloud computing system for connecting, managing and operating smart devices.

Samsung Artik may also be used to enable smart connected technologies in products like cars, electronics and other consumer devices to communicate with each other as well as with mobile devices. The company is also expected to introduce software that’s capable of storing and analyzing data in the Internet of Things system, which basically shows that Samsung wants to provide a single platform to manage and control devices that make up the Internet of Things. The patent application does not make it clear when Samsung intends to formally launch Artik.

Samsung seeing huge demand for gold Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, taps psychologist to explain customers’ color psychology

Samsung appears to have struck gold with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge as customers around the world clamor to get their hands on the company’s new flagship handsets, and it appears the Gold Platinum color option is particularly performing well. Samsung’s latest smartphone sales data shows that one in four consumers (23%) went for the Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 and S6 edge which is why stock in this color is either sold out or nearly sold out across markets in Europe. The company says that it is having to intensify its production to Gold Platinum just to keep up with demand.

To explain why customers are likely to choose one color over another Samsung tapped British lifestyle psychologist Donna Dawson to explain customers’ color psychology. According to Dawson people who choose gold are “striving for prosperity, financial success and general contentment.” They also tend to be warm, outgoing and appreciate the company of others. Customers who go with green are more likely to be balanced, loyal, hard-working, honest and concerned for others.

“People who choose Samsung’s Blue Topaz as their preferred color are self-confident, fastidious, discriminating, sensitive, exacting, and intuitive,” says Dawson, adding that they long for personal security and need to be loved. Dawson brands people who choose white as their preferred color as status-seeking extroverts who represent honesty, purity and wisdom with a mix of brashness, overconfidence and an open nature. Last but not the least, the psychologist says that black has “always been the color of choice of the loner, rebel or “outsider,” and those who work hard to be recognized for their individualism, independence and their ability to stand out from the crowd.

Does this explain why you picked the color you did for your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge? Or maybe you just liked how it looked? Sound off in the comments below.
