Samsung Galaxy J2 pops up on Geekbench with a quad-core CPU, Android 5.1.1

The fact that the Galaxy J2 is under development was confirmed when the phone was spotted on its way to India for testing, and today we’re getting a look at some of the J2′s specs thanks to its appearance on the Geekbench benchmark database. The benchmark doesn’t list all of the phone’s hardware, but it reveals that the J2 features a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and Android 5.1.1, in addition to a 4.7-inch display as was revealed by the import listing.

The presence of Android 5.1.1 is the notable thing here, as that would make the Galaxy J2 more current than many of Samsung’s existing devices (including flagship ones) in terms of the software. It’s highly likely we will see the new TouchWiz UX from the Galaxy S6 lineup on the J2, though it will also probably be a slightly limited version to better suit the low-end hardware, which was the case with the Android 4.4 build on the Galaxy J1.

Speaking of the J1, Samsung’s first Galaxy J smartphone was nothing to write home about, so we can only hope the J2 will be a considerable upgrade. We all know Samsung could do much better in the low-end smartphone market, but until it can start making its devices offer a better price-to-performance ratio, the company will continue to lose consumers to local manufacturers from China and India.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos gets the Android 5.1.1 update

The dual SIM variant of the Galaxy S6 might not be available in more than a small handful of regions around the world, but Samsung isn’t leaving it behind when it comes to the Android 5.1.1 update. The Galaxy S6 Duos has begun receiving Android 5.1.1 over the air in Dubai, with the update bringing the same new features and changes as the update for the single SIM Galaxy S6 (and Galaxy S6 edge).

That includes the usual 5.1.1 improvements, with updates to security and performance, some UI changes such as the option to remove the Quick Connect and S Finder toggles from the notification shade and a wallpaper parallax effect, and support for camera features like shutter speed control and lower ISO values (though you will need to use a third-party camera app to take advantage.)

The update can be downloaded over the air and through Samsung Kies; if the OTA doesn’t show up for you, you can head into the Settings » About device » Software updates menu and hit the Check now button to hurry the process up.

Samsung to provide flexible OLED displays for Apple Watch

Samsung has reportedly inked a deal with Apple to provide display panels for the Apple Watch. The company will will join LG as flexible OLED display panel suppliers for the Cupertino-based company’s sole smartwatch. These Korean display manufacturers are currently the only brands to offer flexible OLED panels. Apple generally contracts two or three suppliers for electronic components for its products to have a steady supply as well as to keep the prices in check. The company recently started working with LG and Samsung to develop a flexible OLED display panel that will be thinner and lighter than the current-generation displays that are being used in the Apple Watch.

Even though LG and Samsung supply displays for Apple Watch, they compete with Apple in the smartwatch market. All these brands have their custom operating systems on their smartwatch offerings – Apple Watch uses Watch OS, LG Watch Urbane LTE uses Web OS based interface, while most of Samsung’s smartwatches run on Tizen. Apple Watch sold in quite good numbers (estimated around 2.7 million units) from April to mid-June its launch, but the frenzy died down and some analysts have downgraded their estimations for Apple Watch sales. Samsung will soon be releasing their first round-face smartwatch, the Gear A (also codenamed as Orbis), with a newer version of Tizen onboard. The company has already inked deals with some service providers to make apps for its next-generation smartwatch.

Themes Thursday: Material Design and Material Dark themes released in the Theme Store today!

Looks like this is the best week for Themes Thursday yet, as we could spot a number of good-looking themes in the Theme Store today. Twelve new themes have been released for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge in the Theme Store this week. Two new Material Design inspired stock Android themes – Material Design and Material Dark – are a part of this week’s package.

Samsung has released these new Material themes, which are designed by Cameron Bunch, after suspending them last week due to copyright issues. If you thought that Material Dark theme would increase your device’s battery life, you would be disappointed. It just uses a combination of darker colors instead of complete black. Apart from those beautiful Material themes, I quite liked Peprico Marine, Weyo, and Blush as well. What themes did you like?

I think that Samsung should offer an option to selectively choose an icon pack instead of forcing icons from the applied theme on us. I’ve realised that a number of themes would look good if they are used with stock Samsung icons. Do you agree with me? Do you think that Theme Store is improving week after week?

Verizon finally releases Lollipop for the Galaxy Note Edge

Galaxy Note Edge users on Verizon have had to wait for a long time to get Lollipop on their devices and today the carrier is finally sending out this update to them, even though it updated the Galaxy Note 4 to Lollipop in April and around the same time other carriers released Android 5.0 for the Galaxy Note Edge. Software version LRX22C.N915VVRU2BOF2 is now being rolled out to Galaxy Note Edge owners on Verizon.

Verizon outlines some of the improvements and features that this update brings in the official support document, users get a revamped interface with Material Design elements, Android Auto support, an improved notifications experience, floating action button in various applications as well as Galaxy Apps and the Milk Music app from Samsung. The update removes “Blocking mode” and replaces it with the “Do not disturb” mode, removes “Recording mode” from the Camera settings and adds “Slow motion” and “Fast motion” to Camera Mode. Verizon has started rolling out Lollipop for the Galaxy Note Edge just now which means it may take a while for the update to go live for all Verizon subscribers across the United States.
