ITC rules that Samsung didn’t break any of Nvidia’s patents

Samsung achieved another victory in the court last Friday as the US International Trade Commission ruled that the tech company didn’t infringe any of Nvidia’s graphics patents. The investigation started a year ago when Nvidia claimed that Samsung and Qualcomm infringed upon its GPU-related patents, and had they won, they would have the power to cease US sales of various Galaxy devices such as the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4.

This probably isn’t the end for Nvidia’s lawsuit, but these sort of processes last for a long time and they don’t usually cause any significant blow in a company’s profits. However, the ITC has the power to ban the sale of certain devices, and that could potentially harm a company like Samsung.

This isn’t the only lawsuit that Samsung has going on. It’s also involved in another patent war with Apple, and the last time we heard the two companies agreed on a court-supervised meditation which is going to take a while to process. Battles like these are slowly starting to become the norm as many companies have a bone to pick with each other.

Samsung has started working on Android 6.0 Marshmallow for these devices

It’s that time of the year when Google releases the newest version of Android and everyone starts getting impatient about when the new version will come to their device, or if their device will even be eligible for the upgrade. Samsung has never been a company to formally announce a list of smartphones that will get a particular version of Android, so we often have to turn to insider information to get an idea of its plans.

For Android 6.0 Marshmallow we did exactly that, and we have been able to come up with a list of devices for which Samsung has started testing Marshmallow. As expected, at this point the list includes all of the flagships from the last year and so, including the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note 5. There’s also the Galaxy S5 Neo, which is more of a feature-packed mid-range smartphone than a top-of-the-line handset.

We should point out that this list is preliminary, and just because your device isn’t mentioned doesn’t mean it will not get Android 6.0. Lollipop came to a lot of Samsung phones and tablets, and the case shouldn’t be too different for Marshmallow. As usual, there’s no telling when the updates will actually roll out for a particular device, and you can read this post to know why that is the case.

Galaxy Mega On might not come with themes support

Support for themes is one of the best features of the faster and refined version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UX that we have seen on this year’s Galaxy devices, but it seems the feature might not make it into the company’s upcoming Galaxy Mega On. GalaxyClub.nl has stumbled upon images purportedly from the Mega On’s user manual, and they indicate that the phone will not have themes as part of the customization options.

Now, it’s possible the user manual isn’t the final version and could be updated to show themes when the phone is launched, especially since Samsung has left it to its regional arms to decide on whether a device should have themes support or not. Even if the Mega On doesn’t have the option of downloading third-party themes, it should have a few pre-installed ones, which is the case on the Galaxy J2. The Galaxy J2 sports considerably lower-end specs than the Mega On, so we don’t see a reason for Samsung to be omitting one of its software’s best features for the upcoming device.

Samsung Galaxy A9 specifications leaked through benchmarks

As we reported earlier, Samsung is working on a bunch of Galaxy A series smartphones that could be released in the coming months. This includes the Galaxy A9, the Galaxy A3X, the Galaxy A5X, and the Galaxy A7X. Now, specifications of the upcoming Galaxy A9 has surfaced on the Internet.

According to the AnTuTu benchmarks that we’ve stumbled upon, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop running Galaxy A9 (SM-A9000) will feature a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 620 processor (MSM8976) with Adreno 510 GPU, 3GB RAM, and 32GB internal storage, but there are no details regarding the camera on the upcoming smartphone.

Samsung recently imported components of the Galaxy A9 to India for testing purposes, but not the actual device, which makes us think that the device might still be at least three or four months away from being officially announced. In any case, we will report more details about the device when as soon as we get to know about them.

Themes Thursday: Here are some of the best themes released this week

Samsung has been releasing a lot of themes for its recently released smartphones lately, and this week is no different. The company has released 53 themes in the Theme Store this week, and we are listing some of the best ones here as a part of Themes Thursday. Note that some of these themes might not be available for slightly lower-end devices like the Galaxy J5 and the Galaxy J7.

As some one who likes Google’s Material UI design, I have installed the Android 6.0 Dark as well as Material Theme, but I also liked the Orion and all the RainDrop Themes, and all of them are listed below. Also, let us know if you think that there are not enough well-done themes in Samsung’s Theme Store, and if you think that most of the themes have designs that are too childish for your taste.

Samsung Galaxy J3 makes an appearance on GFXBench

The Galaxy J2 has barely been on the market for a month, and Samsung seems to be already working on a Galaxy J3. The Galaxy J3, with model number SM-J3109, has been spotted on the GFXBench benchmark with pretty much all of its specs listed; GFXBench doesn’t seem to have the device in its database anymore, but we can see an SM-J3109 over on Geekbench.

The J3′s specs include a 5-inch HD (1280×720) display, a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front camera, and Android 5.1.1. These specs look to be slight upgrades over what the Galaxy J2 offers, such as an HD screen instead of a qHD one and a more powerful processor. The model number is an oddity – based on other Galaxy J devices the model number should be SM-J300 instead of SM-J310 (the fourth digit isn’t as surprising as Chinese variants of Samsung devices usually have four digit model numbers), though this could be because the J3 is far from an official launch.

We are currently working on a review of the Galaxy J2, and we can only hope Samsung doesn’t launch the J3 before we’re done.

Could Samsung bring something like Apple’s 3D Touch to its smartphones?

The latest iPhones have been making headlines everywhere since their announcement last month, and Apple’s new 3D Touch feature is being singled out as one of the best things about the devices. Earlier this week, Synaptics announced that it was working on a similar technology called ClearForce, which will enable a smartphone to offer various functionality based on the force applied on the display. Synaptics said that it is working with leading OEMs for sampling ClearForce, and it’s possible we will see something 3D Touch on Samsung’s future smartphones.

Synaptics and Samsung have a history of working closely on new technologies, such as the touch-based fingerprint sensor that debuted on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. 3D Touch – or Force Touch as it was initially called – is being heralded as an intuitive method of smartphone interaction (though the consumers will decide how intuitive it really is), and we all know Samsung has never been shy of taking popular elements of its biggest competitor for its own smartphones.

Apple isn’t exactly the first to think of this technology; OEMs were working on fingerprint sensors before Apple introduced them on the iPhones and made them popular, and it’s clear that Synaptics’ version of 3D Touch has been in the works for some time. Samsung was forced to wait for more than a year before it was able to bring touch-based fingerprint scanners to the Galaxy line, and the Korean giant probably wouldn’t want to wait as long with ClearForce.
