Verizon rolls out Marshmallow OTA for the Galaxy Note Edge

Verizon has today started rolling out the long-awaited Marshmallow OTA update (VRU2CPD1) to all its carrier-branded variants of the Galaxy Note Edge located in the United States. Just like the upgrade it rolled out for the handset’s non-curved counterpart, the Galaxy Note 4, this release brings all of the changes you’d expect to find baked into Android 6.0.1, in addition to a plethora of additional bug fixes and stability improvements.

If you’d like to see if the upgrade is ready for your phone, simply head into Settings, followed by About Device, locate and select Software Update, then hit the Update Now button. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to download and install the update from Samsung’s servers. However, it’s worth noting that you’ll need to have at least 50% of battery or be connected to the mains in order to receive the alert.

Samsung Pay now supports US Bank MasterCards

US Bank has confirmed today that its MasterCard cardmembers can now use their cards with Samsung Pay. Its customers now have the opportunity to use convenient payment services as its MasterCards have also gained support for Android Pay, ultimately this is going to make it much easier for customers to try new ways to pay for their purchases on the go.

Consumer and small business MasterCard holders of US Bank can now load their cards on Samsung Pay eligible devices. MasterCard credit cards that the bank issues on behalf of its co-brand partners like Edward Jones and REI work with Samsung Pay as well. Once the cards have been loaded, customers can then leverage the power of Samsung Pay to pay on the go almost everywhere they can pay by card. Samsung Pay supports both NFC and MST which enables the service to work with traditional card readers as well which almost every merchant and corner-shop already has.

Samsung to showcase Tizen-powered SMART digital signage portfolio

Samsung will showcase its next-generation SMART digital signage displays at the InfoComm 2016 trade show in Las Vegas. InfoComm is the world’s largest annual global conference for the professional AV industry. A unique feature of these signages is that they are powered by Tizen operating system.

Samsung’s booth at the expo will showcase a variety of digital outdoor signage solutions under the “Collaborate. Attract. Engage” theme. These displays can be used for advertising, content delivery, and information display management in corporate, hospitality, public, retail and at-home environments.

“As the world’s leading total digital signage solutions provider, we strive to discover new avenues that help our partners deliver captivating content and a differentiated experience at every stage of the customer journey,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

The South Korean display giant will start releasing its new P Series digital signage solutions featuring Samsung SMART Signage Platform 4.0 (SSSP 4.0) powered by Tizen, which allows improved graphical performance, faster response times and loading speeds, and an optional PC-less all-in-one screen. They will also offer HTML5 support for launching web-based apps.

These displays will also feature Samsung’s MagicInfo Server 4.0 program that allows management of the entire display network from any location, easier content programming, drag-and-drop content scheduling, Backup Player, and DataLink content streaming. Samsung will also showcase its slim yet durable and glare-free PHF and PMF display series.

Attendees will also be able to have a look at the company’s OHF large format displays in a variety of sizes: 46-, 55-, 75- and 85-inch models with a brightness of up to 2,500 nits and 5,000:1 contrast ratio. They can operate in harsh weather with operating temperature ranging from -30-degree to 50-degree Celsius.

One tweet from Elon Musk was all it took for $580 million to disappear from Samsung SDI’s market cap

You might have read a report recently about Tesla being close to forming a partnership with Samsung SDI to source battery cells for the Model 3 sedan. If this was true, Samsung SDI would have captured a major chunk of Tesla’s business as the company ramps up production to meet the very impressive demand for its latest electric car. However, that’s not the case, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk clarified through a tweet. That single tweet led to Samsung SDI’s shares sinking more than 8 percent today and subsequently wiping $580 million from the company’s market capitalization.

Musk said in the tweet that Tesla is going to work with Panasonic exclusively for battery cells for the Model 3. While Samsung SDI lost $580 million as a result of this tweet, Panasonic’s shares surged during the same period and it added nearly $800 million to its market cap. There’s an old saying among equity market investors – “Buy the rumor, sell the news” – those who rode the surge on rumors of Samsung SDI getting in business with Tesla would have made a pretty penny if they got out of their positions before Musk sent it all crashing down.

Galaxy Note 7 rumored to be sporting an iris scanner, again

The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to break cover by early August. As we lead up to the big day, it’s only natural that we’ll encounter a handful of leaks pertaining to the device. While most recent leaks have been talking about the name of the handset (Galaxy Note 6, Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy Note 6 edge among a few others), we’ve sparingly heard about the hardware of the phablet. We exclusively broke the story about the Note 6/7 featuring an iris scanner, while also revealing that the device would be water resistant like the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge.

We’re hearing about the iris scanner yet again, thanks to a couple of screenshots posted online. The screenshots are available in Korean and Chinese, which almost confirms its authenticity. The third onscreen option supposedly says “use iris”.

The screenshot reveals the settings page, where the option to use your fingerprint or PIN is also visible. Needless to say, these are pretty convincing screenshots and could be one of the highlight features of the upcoming Note flagship. Samsung recently released the iris scanner enabled Galaxy Tab Iris in India, so if these leaks are indeed true, the Galaxy Note 7 won’t be the company’s first device to utilize the sensor.

But with that in mind, we must be mindful that screenshots are not hard to doctor. So make sure you take this with a large dosage of salt. Do you think this is the real deal?

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition goes up for pre-order in Indonesia

Samsung unveiled a special Batman-themed Galaxy S7 edge last month, and its price was revealed in Russia yesterday. Now, the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition has gone up for pre-order in Indonesia. Pre-orders for the device can be placed from 8-19 June, and it can be lapped up for IDR 14.999 million (~ $1136).

Consumers who live in Jakarta can get their devices between 24-26 June from the Central Park Mall. For those who live outside Jakarta can get their pre-orders delivered starting 24 June. BCA card holders can get the device at an attractive 12 months installment (zero percent interest) plan along with reward points worth IDR 500,000.

The limited edition variant of the Galaxy S7 edge comes with a special black-colored Gear VR, an Injustice Edition themed back cover, a gold-colored Batarang, an Oculus VR content voucher, and an in-game content voucher for the Injustice: Gods Among Us Android game.
