Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 clamshell smartphone introduced in China

The new mid-range clamshell Android smartphone from Samsung was leaked half a dozen times in the past two weeks. Now, Samsung has officially introduced it as the Galaxy Folder 2 in China. It’s a clamshell smartphone with a 3.8-inch display, a quad-core processor, and an 8-megapixel camera.

The Galaxy Folder 2 (SM-G1600) features a 3.8-inch TFT LCD display with WVGA resolution, an 8-megapixel primary camera with 1080p video recording, and a 5-megapixel secondary camera. Both cameras have an aperture of f/1.9. It runs Android 6.0, and comes equipped with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot.

As per Samsung China’s official website, the device comes with separate dual-SIM card and microSD card slots, so buyers can use all at once instead of using either SIM 2 or a microSD card. The Galaxy Folder 2 is compatible with LTE (with support for VoLTE calls), single-band Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS (with A-GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou), Bluetooth 4.2, and a microUSB 2.0 port.

Samsung has packed the Galaxy Folder 2 with a 1,950 mAh battery, an accelerometer, a hall sensor, and a proximity sensor. There’s no information as to when the device would be available for purchase and at what price. However, we will update you once we receive more details regarding this matter.

This is the Galaxy Tab A (2016) with S Pen

Two weeks ago we reported that Samsung has started working on a new variant of the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 which features the new S Pen that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy Note 7. It’s more or less the same Galaxy Tab A 10.1 that was released earlier this year with the only major difference being that of the stylus. We brought you some images of this new tablet in the past and now we’ve got actual press images of the device itself.

As you can see the Galaxy Tab A (2016) with S Pen (SM-P580) looks identical to the existing Galaxy Tab A 10.1. That’s because both tablets have the same 10.1-inch display. The Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016) with S Pen is likely going to be powered by a 1.6GHz Exynos 7870 processor with 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage with microSD support, a 7,300mAh battery and Android Marshmallow.

We’ve already told you that this is the same S Pen that you get with the Galaxy Note 7 so all of the new software features that are included in the phablet will make their way to this tablet as well. Samsung is yet to officially announce pricing and availability information for the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016) with S Pen.

Themes Thursday: Here are the six best themes released this week

Themes offer an easier way to customise your Galaxy smartphone experience, and Samsung introduced this feature starting with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. The company releases dozens of themes every week, and we shortlist the best among them and present them here on Themes Thursday.

This week, Samsung has released a collection of whopping 135 themes and we’ve shortlisted six that we think look great. Samsung Z2 released in South Africa

Samsung today released its latest Tizen-powered smartphone – the Samsung Z2 – in South Africa. This handset was first launched in India and it’s now making its way to South Africa. It will be positioned as a device for customers who are moving up from feature phones and are looking for an affordable smartphone.

“We are delighted to be able to bring Samsung’s much-awaited Z2 handset to the South African market; providing an affordable handset that has a range of fantastic attributes, not the least of which is its 4G capability. This alone puts it in the company of some of the best smartphones available today,” said Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

Samsung Z2 features a 3.97-inch display and a quad-core Spreadtrum processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. There’s also a 5-megapixel rear and VGA front camera as well as a 1,500mAh battery. It’s powered by Tizen 2.4 out of the box, and happens to be the first Tizen smartphone to support 4G LTE.

The specs are obviously nothing to write home about but then again, the Samsung Z2 is meant for an entirely different segment of the market. Customers in South Africa can purchase the Samsung Z2 starting today for R1,099 ($79) off-contract or from Vodacom with plans starting at R79 ($6) per month.

Shipping woes may put a dent in Samsung’s sales during the holiday season

Samsung just can’t seem to catch a break. As the company braces for a potentially billion dollar hit due to the Galaxy Note 7 recall, it also faces the possibility of losing tens of millions of dollars in revenue by missing out on sales during the holiday season this year. Samsung has said that nearly $38 million worth of its products and parts are stranded onboard two cargo ships operated by Hanjin Shipping Co. Hanjin has filed for bankruptcy protection and Samsung has supported its move, the company says in a court filing that unless an order is passed that protects the shipping line against creditors its ships will not be able to dock.

Hanjin Shipping is the biggest container shipping line in South Korea and its collapse has sparked concerns that the ships will not be able to pay docking fees or handling charges at ports and this might give cause to its creditors to seize the cargo. This is why many ports in Asia, Europe and the United States have turned Hanjin’s ships away. Nearly 85 Hanjin ships are currently stranded near 50 ports across 26 countries. The ships need to dock so that Samsung can unload its cargo, Samsung says in its court filing that its losses will “continue to escalate so long as the cargo aboard these ships remains unloaded.”

Samsung’s visual display business has parts and finished goods worth $24.4 million in 304 containers destined for its factory in Mexico while its consumer electronics division has products like washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers and microwave ovens in an additional 312 containers onboard Hanjin ships. If the ships don’t dock and the cargo isn’t unloaded immediately, Samsung will need to make alternative arrangements to transport the cargo by air in order to meet its contractual obligations. The company estimates that it will have to charter at least 16 planes by paying around $8.8 million to transport its goods stranded on these ships.

“All these costs and delays will be a loss not only to Samsung, but also to major retailers in the U.S. and, ultimately, to U.S. consumers,” Samsung mentions in the filing, adding that it’s important to Samsung’s and retailer’s interests that major disruptions in production are avoided particularly ahead of the lucrative shopping season. If this issue is not resolved soon, you might find it hard to come across a Samsung appliance on Black Friday.

Samsung India giving away the new Gear VR for free to make up for Note 7 delay

The Galaxy Note 7 has gone off retail shelves around the world as Samsung works on replacing the faulty battery that has made numerous units of the device explode. The company has offered consumers the option of getting a refund for their Note 7 or exchanging it for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge instead, and carriers are also offering full refunds to those who wish to get one. Over in the Indian market, Samsung has now begun notifying pre-order customers that to make up for the delay of the Note 7, every customer will be getting the new Gear VR for free, in addition to credits that they can use on the Oculus Store for VR content.

India is one of the few markets where pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 7 didn’t include any freebies; instead, customers in the country were offered the new Gear VR at a reduced price of Rs. 1,990 (roughly $30). It wasn’t very fair as the company was offering things like a free 256GB microSD card in some markets, but it looks like the Note 7 recall has brought things on a mostly equal footing for Indian customers. In addition to the free Gear VR, Samsung is also bundling Rs. 3,300 (roughly $50)worth of credits that can be used to purchase content on the Oculus Store. A refund is also being offered, although you will have to call up Samsung’s customer care to proceed with the refund as there is no provision for the same on the company’s official online store.

As is the case elsewhere, Samsung India hasn’t revealed a concrete date for when the Galaxy Note 7 will go back on sale. We’re guessing it will take a while to get those faulty non-removable batteries replaced, so it will likely be October before Samsung’s latest and greatest flagship is available for purchase once again.
