Samsung announces Samsung NEXT, global fund to see startups achieve success

Samsung sees services as an important part of its future, and recognizes that innovation and talent can come from anywhere – even the smallest of startups. To that end, the Korean giant announced Samsung NEXT, a revamp of its former Global Innovation Center, to fund these startups that are paving the way in trending tech fields such as the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, and AI (artificial intelligence). Samsung launched Samsung NEXT three months ago after starting a new incubation center in Tel Aviv.

Today’s announcement was about not just startups, but their funding, as funding can make or break a young, fledgling startup. Money is the key to opportunity in the tech business, and Samsung doesn’t want young startups destroyed before they grow. Since services are what the mobile experience is all about, Samsung’s financial support in this area can help bring “think-outside-the-box” ideas to its own mobile experience (particularly for its growing platform, Tizen).

Samsung’s Tel Aviv center is the fifth location the company has started so far (with other offices in Korea, San Francisco, New York, and Mountain View). Additional incubation centers will open up later this year.

Samsung brings new innovations across the board at CES 2017

Samsung has been a major player in the Internet of Things (IoT), but the Korean giant introduced new devices today across the board at CES 2017 for both work and play that will enhance the lives of consumers (no matter the task).

First, Samsung unveiled the new QLED TV, a 75-inch monitor that lets you view on-screen content from any angle. Samsung says that it’s perfect for viewing despite your viewing angle or room lighting. QLED, as Samsung says, doesn’t have the risk of burn-in that comes with OLED TVs, and Samsung has made a number of changes to the QLED TV so that color accuracy is better than ever before. Alongside of the QLED TV, Samsung introduced accessories such as the no-gap wall mount and the optional TV stands (Gravity and Studio) to beautify your home while providing the setup you want. Finally, new services such as the Samsung Sports Service and TV PLUS (now expanded to the US market) provide more content at your fingertips.

Additionally, Samsung has brought other innovations to the home such as its FlexWash+FlexDry setup that lets you wash both large loads and small loads simultaneously. Family Hub 2.0 takes Samsung’s own 21.5-inch touchscreen refrigerator and now expands its selection from 4 to 10 for greater choice and customization.

Apart from the home, Samsung’s greatest contributions at CES came in the form of laptops, with the Chromebook Plus, Chromebook Pro, the Notebook 9, and the Notebook Odyssey. These Chromebooks make Chromebook history, being the very first to come with a pen that can be used for drawing, doodling, and writing. The Notebook 9 is a 15-inch laptop that is headed to the US market this year and features a discrete GPU for intensive gaming tasks. While the Notebook 9 can be used for gaming, Samsung’s Notebook Odyssey is the company’s first gaming laptop that’s designed for any gaming tasks you throw at it. Coming in at 15 and 17 inches, Samsung says it will provide more details (other than those that can be found at the link below) later this year.

With new TVs, a unique washer and dryer system, alongside of an improved touchscreen refrigerator and new consumer and gamer laptops, Samsung shows that it can make home life and mobile life better.

Samsung has shipped more than five million Gear VR devices

Samsung dropped an interesting figure during its press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 today. President and COO of Samsung Electronics America Tim Baxter mentioned during his talk that the company has shipped more than five million Gear VR devices and consumers have viewed more than ten million hours of immersive video using Samsung’s virtual reality solution.

The company has been working hard since last year to push its VR credentials. It has created an entire end-to-end virtual reality solution that includes the Gear 360 camera which enables users to easily capture VR content that they can then view with the Gear VR headset. Samsung launched a slightly improved version of its Gear VR headset last year.

Samsung has relied on promotions and offers to push virtual reality. Last year, it gave away a free Gear VR headset to all those who pre-ordered a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, and it goes without saying that millions of people across the globe pre-ordered one of the best flagships that Samsung has ever made.

Samsung addresses elephant in the room at CES 2017, says Note 7 report will be shared ‘very soon’

There was an elephant in the room this afternoon as Tim Baxter, President and COO of Samsung Electronics America walked out on stage at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 to kick off Samsung’s press conference. While many would have expected Samsung to simply not mention the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Baxter started off by addressing the elephant in the room.

“As you know, this year was a challenging year for Samsung. Some of you were directly impacted and some certainly saw the media coverage especially about the Note 7,” Baxter said, adding that “We continue our intensive efforts internally and with third party experts to understand what happened and to make sure that it does not happen again. He added that Samsung will be sharing its root cause report on the Galaxy Note 7 “very soon.”

Despite the setbacks, Baxter reminded the attendees that Samsung has not and will not stop innovating and then he kicked off the day’s proceedings. It was good move by Samsung to get this out of the way so that the press can now focus on everything new that it’s unveiling at CES 2017 instead of obsessing about why it didn’t mention the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco at all.

Samsung teams up with Under Armour for enhanced fitness apps

Samsung today announced that it has partnered up with Under Armour for enhanced fitness applications that bring together the best of Samsung’s wearable device technology with Under Armour’s suite of robust fitness applications. As part of this partnership, Under Armour is going to develop four of its best health and fitness apps for the Gear Fit 2, Gear S2 and the Gear S3 so that fitness enthusiasts can have access to all of the features that UA’s health and fitness platform offers and also provide them access to UA’s digital community.

The apps will be available as part of Under Armour Connected Fitness suite including UA Record, MyFitnessPal, Endomondo and MapMyRun. All apps will offer features exclusive to Samsung’s wearable devices so users will have an added incentive if they’re sticking with Samsung’s devices.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 owners can access the UA Record, MapMyRun and MyFitnessPal apps starting today while Endomondo will be available later this month. The Gear S2 and Gear S3 will get this suite of apps in early 2017.

Samsung’s new Chromebooks are ‘Designed for Google Play’

We had heard rumors that Samsung was working on new Chromebooks and the company has officially announced them today at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017. Designed in partnership with Google, Samsung says that the new Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro have been “Designed for Google Play,” that’s because both notebooks come with the Play Store installed straight out of the box, allowing users to easily install and use Android apps on the Chromebooks.

The idea with these notebooks was to provide the power and productivity of a laptop without compromising on the flexibility and versatility that a tablet offers. Both models feature a 360-degree rotating touchscreen, a quad HD resolution display and a built-in digitized pen packaged in a new lightweight metal design.

“With the Chromebook Plus and Pro, we’re partnering with Google to pair a sleek design with supreme flexibility, encouraging users to experience more with Google Play and Android apps, while continuing to provide simplicity, top-rated security and shareability inherent in Chromebooks,” said Alanna Cotton, vice president of product marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

The 360-degree rotating touchscreen display of the Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro allow the device to be used as both a notebook and a premium tablet. For the first time in Samsung’s Chromebook lineup, both models feature a built-in pen which is embedded on the side of the device. The pen enables users to easily take notes and capture on-screen content.

The Quad HD 2400×1600 pixel resolution display on these notebooks has 3:2 aspect ratio and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro come with updated ports which include two USB Type-C ports and have support for 4K video streaming.

Samsung Chromebook Plus has an ARM hexa-core processor while the Chromebook Pro packs an Intel Core M3 processor. Both have 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 720p front camera, and a 39Wh battery that promises eight hours of usage on a single charge.

Samsung will start selling the Chromebook Plus next month via major retailers with prices starting at $449. The Chromebook Pro will be available later this spring which is why its price hasn’t been revealed yet.
