Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ get Bixby update and May security patch on T-Mobile

Earlier today, T-Mobile rolled out the much-awaited Nougat update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Surprisingly, the company also released Android 7.0 for the Galaxy Tab S2. It has released a firmware update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ as well, but it’s not Nougat, as both devices come with Android 7.0 out of the box.

The update that T-Mobile is rolling out today for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ brings the May security patch for both handsets. The May security patch brings fixes for 54 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures in the Android operating system as well as fixes for 11 vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s own software.

The changelog mentions that this firmware release also brings an update for Bixby. There’s no need to be excited just yet, though. This Bixby update doesn’t enable Bixby Voice and it’s still unclear when the voice capabilities of one of the Galaxy S8′s biggest features will be available.

The usual slew of device stability and performance improvements are included in this update that weighs in at over 375MB. It also ensures improved stability for microSD cards. T-Mobile is rolling out this update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ over-the-air and it should be live for all users soon.

T-Mobile releases Nougat for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy Tab S2

T-Mobile confirmed a couple of days back that the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge was ready. It promised to release said update in the near future. T-Mobile subscribers who own either handset should keep an eye out for an update notification today as Magenta has now released Nougat for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

That’s not all. While T-Mobile didn’t mention the Galaxy Tab S2 earlier this week, it has also released the Nougat update for this tablet. Not like Galaxy Tab S2 owners on T-Mobile are going to mind, they will be excited to finally get a taste of Nougat as well.

Firmware version G920TUVU5FQE1 and G925TUVU5FQE1 has been released by T-Mobile for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Galaxy Tab S2 owners on T-Mobile should keep an eye out for firmware version T817TUVU2BQE2.

T-Mobile is rolling out these firmware updates over-the-air so it may take a couple of days before they arrive for all users across the United States.

For those unaware, Bixby Voice was originally intended to launch in the UK and US alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ back in April, but it only went live in South Korea, as Samsung’s reportedly been having trouble teaching the assistant English.

S-Patch3 wearable with Samsung’s Bio Processor spotted at FCC

Samsung announced in late 2015 that it had developed a Bio Processor to improve health tracking features in wearable devices. It was going to make products powered by this chip and was also going to sell the chip to other manufacturers who wanted to improve their fitness and activity trackers.

At the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas, Samsung showcased a prototype wearable device that utilized the Bio Processor it had announced a few weeks back. It was called S-Patch. The prototype featured Bluetooth connectivity and built-in memory. It could be attached to the user’s chest to track heart rate in real time.

It appears that Samsung has developed the commercial version of the prototype that it demonstrated at CES in January last year. A Samsung device called S-Patch3 has been spotted at the FCC. An image included in the filing reveals that this is a “wearable health monitoring system.”

No further details are available at this point in time so we’ll have to wait and see when Samsung reveals more about this new wearable device. Whenever an unreleased device makes an appearance at the FCC, it’s normally taken as an indication that the launch is not that far off.

That’s likely going to be the case with the S-Patch3 as well.
