Samsung’s new flip phone generated quite a bit of hype over the past week or so. Flip phones have long been discarded as a relic of the past. They’re not as popular with customers now as they once were.

A small market does exist for them in certain parts of the world, though. Samsung continues to cater to that market by launching flip phones, like the one it has launched today.

The question is, do you want flip phones to come back? Does the form factor make sense when the internals are similar to any other mid-range handset as we’ve seen with Samsung’s new SM-G9298 flip phone?

Samsung officially launches the SM-G9298 flip phone

We had been seeing a lot of leaks concerning the SM-G9298 flip phone over the past couple of weeks. Samsung has finally announced this handset officially. As expected, the SM-G9298 or “Leader 8” has only been confirmed for China and it’s unlikely that the handset will be launched elsewhere.

Crafted from aviation-grade aluminum alloy, the flip phone has a 4.2-inch full HD Super AMOLED display on the outside as well as on the inside.

It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage with microSD card support. The handset has a 12-megapixel f/1.7 rear camera and a 5-megapixel f/1.9 front camera.

Measuring in at 130.2 x 62.6 x 15.9mm, the handset weighs 235g. It has a 2,300mAh battery with support for wireless charging.

Additional features include Samsung Pay, Secure Folder, a multi-function configurable hotkey and S Voice. Bixby doesn’t get a place on Samsung’s new flip phone.

The handset will be available in China only for now from China Mobile. Samsung is yet to confirm the price and release date for customers in China. As we’ve seen with flip phones that it has launched in the past, it’s quite unlikely that Samsung will launch this handset in markets other than China.

SamMobile Daily Recap: August 2, 2017 — Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and more!

Final Galaxy Note 8 specifications detailed

We’ve known for a while now that the Galaxy Note 8 isn’t really going to push the envelope on specs. That has always been the case. The Note flagships have almost always had specs similar to the Galaxy S flagships released earlier in the year with just one or two major differences.

The famous Twitter leakster @evleaks has detailed what he claims to be the “final” Galaxy Note 8 specs today. As expected, there are no surprises, as far as the core components are concerned.

Touting physical dimensions of 162.5mm x 74.6mm with an 8.5mm thickness, the Galaxy Note 8 is not going to feel much larger than the Galaxy S8+.

It will feature a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED 1440×2960 pixel resolution display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The corners of the handset will be squared off in true Note fashion. The Galaxy Note 8 will have IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

Like the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy Note 8 will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 8895 processor. The US-bound variants will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. The first major change with the new flagship phablet is that it will have 6GB of RAM compared to the Galaxy S8’s 4GB. It retains 64GB as the standard storage option.

The Galaxy Note 8 will be Samsung’s first flagship smartphone to feature a dual camera. Both rear cameras have 12-megapixel sensors. The primary wide-angle sensor has f/1.7 aperture and dual-pixel autofocus. The telephoto lens has f/2.4 aperture with 2x optical zoom. Both lenses feature optical image stabilization. The 8-megapixel front camera gets a f/1.7 autofocus lens.

The battery will be slightly smaller than the Galaxy S8+’s 3,500mAh cell. The Galaxy Note 8 is said to feature a fast-charging 3,300mAh battery with support for wireless charging.

Due to be unveiled on August 23, the Galaxy Note 8 will ship in Midnight Black and Maple Gold initially and later in Orchid Grey and Deep Sea Blue. Looks like Samsung hasn’t learned that it’s better for it to release all color options at launch.

As far as the price is concerned, the Galaxy Note 8 is expected to cost around €1,000 in Europe when it starts shipping next month.

Android 7.1 for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to roll out soon

Samsung’s decision to ship the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ with Android 7.0 left many confused. The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system at the flagship’s launch was Android 7.1. It made sense for the company to release its new handset with the latest version of Android but it didn’t do that.

Then again, it’s not like the Android 7.1 update adds any major new features that Galaxy S8 owners have missed out on. It brings new emoji, launcher actions for the Pixel launcher and other minor tweaks. The emoji and launcher updates don’t really matter to Galaxy S8 owners since Samsung uses its own versions of both on its handsets.

Nevertheless, the Android 7.1 update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ should be rolling out soon. Vodafone Australia has updated its website to reflect that the new firmware release has been submitted for review. This means that it’s in the final stage before roll out.

The carrier itself mentions that this is going to be a “Stability and Bug Fix” update so users shouldn’t expect much in the way of new features. With a major Australian carrier coming close to rolling out Android 7.1 for Galaxy S8, it’s only a matter of time before said update is released for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in other markets across the globe.
