SamMobile Daily Recap: September 7, 2017 — Galaxy J3 (2017), Galaxy Note 8 and more!

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 8 in India on September 12

Samsung has announced that it will launch its new Galaxy Note smartphone in India on September 12. The launch will take place in New Delhi on 12:30 PM, and there will be a livestream if you’re interested to watch the live event.

The Galaxy Note 8 could be priced anywhere between INR 70,000 (about $1,094) to INR 75,000 (about $1,172) in India, and it is being rumored that the company will bundle the DeX docking station and 100GB of additional cellular data for free with the phablet.

Last year, the Galaxy Note 7 was launched in India, but it got pulled from the shelves one day before it was meant to be made available due to faulty batteries. Now, the Galaxy Note 8 will compete with the iPhone 8 and the Google Pixel 2 this year.

Themes Thursday: Here are this week’s seven best themes

Welcome back to Themes Thursday! Hundreds of new themes get released for Galaxy smartphones every week, and we try to choose the best ones for you. This week, Samsung has released more than a couple of hundred themes in the Theme Store, and we’ve chosen seven theme packs that you might like.

Two new themes from designer Binod Kumar Ray – FlowerVaseUI and PlainUI – made it to our list this week, thanks to their fresh color palette and well-designed, circular icons. The [WHL] Bi Bo theme looks good too, thanks to its brighter UI and slick-looking icons. Aloha and Sky Black themes would suit those who like darker UI on their phones.

RBBense and LoveNeon themes might appeal some people’s taste as well. Which new theme pack did you like the most this week? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung takes the wraps off the Galaxy C8 in China

Samsung has quietly announced the Galaxy C8 in China. As expected, the handset is near-identical to the recently-launched Galaxy J7+, with a dual-camera setup (13MP+5MP) sitting in pride of place on the rear.

Two variants of the Galaxy C8 are scheduled to hit the shelves in the region: one with 32GB of storage, and the other with 64GB. Both sport a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a MediaTek Helio P20 processor and a 3,000mAh battery.

The only difference between the two models is that the former features 3GB of RAM, while the latter wields 4GB—well that, and the fact the slightly more powerful unit is set to carry a marginally higher price tag.

Just like the Galaxy J7+, which comes with 4GB of RAM as standard on the base 32GB variant, the Galaxy C8 is home to a slew of connectivity options, including 4G LTE, Bluetooth, GPS, USB Type-C and, of course, a dual-SIM slot.

It also ships running Android 7.1.1 Nougat skinned with the latest build of Samsung’s Experience—formerly known as TouchWiz—user interface, and is equipped with a number of exciting software features, like Always On Display and Bixby.

The best way to look as the Galaxy C8 is as a rebranded variant of the Galaxy J7+, because that’s exactly what it is. There’s still no word on pricing, but we expect it to start at around ¥2,000 ($305).

Leaked Galaxy C8 press images show it’s just a Galaxy J7+ for China

The next phone to launch in Samsung’s Galaxy C series of mid-range phones looks set to be the Galaxy C8, which will be the third phone from the Korean giant to feature dual rear cameras. Today, press images of the C8 have leaked online, and as many of you will notice, it looks exactly like the recently launched Galaxy J7+. You wouldn’t be wrong, as the J7+ is expected to be launched as the Galaxy C8 in the Chinese market (the C8 would feature model number SM-C7100, while the J7+ is SM-J710.

What remains to be seen, however, is what specs the C8 will carry. The C series phones are supposed to be mid-range devices, and it’s rare for Samsung to use the same design for two devices from different price segments while changing the overall specs (unless these devices are spin-offs of each other, like the Galaxy On phones that launch in markets like India and China). Of course, the specs could remain the same as well, given the J7+ does have improved hardware compared to the Galaxy J7 (2017). Hopefully, Samsung will change out the MediaTek chip inside the J7+ with a Snapdragon SoC, as the former isn’t the best match for a Samsung smartphone.

As for the dual camera, we should see the same setup on the Galaxy C8 as the one on the J7+: a primary 13-megapixel f/1.7 sensor and a secondary 5-megapixel f/1.9 sensor, with support for the Live Focus mode that debuted on the Galaxy Note 8. A release date isn’t known, although we could see the phone go official on September 22 going by the date on the lock screen in the images. Leaked Galaxy C8 press images show its dual rear cameras

August security update now making the rounds for the Galaxy J3 (2017)

Samsung has started rolling out its first significant maintenance update for the recently-released Galaxy J3 (2017) in Europe. The upgrade—J330FXXU1AQH4—includes all of the patches included in last month’s release, as well as a handful of miscellaneous bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.

Here’s the full changelog:

  • Applied Monthly Google Security Patches (August)
  • Improved Auto Brightness Control
  • Improved PC Connection Stability

For those unaware, the August maintenance release, which started making the rounds for the Galaxy S8 more than a month ago, bundles patches for a total of 40 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures; twenty-eight in the Android operating system and twelve in Samsung’s in-house firmware.

To check to see if the update is available for your Galaxy J3 (2017), open up Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. If you don’t feel like going down that route, you can wait until you receive an alert instructing you install the OTA, but that typically takes a little longer to arrive.

Time is on your side though, seeing as the Galaxy J3 (2017) is part of Samsung’s quarterly upgrade program, meaning it won’t receive its next maintenance release until December, while its flagship and former-flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy S7, are treated to the latest patches on a monthly basis.
